He looks ridiculously young, especially when you compare him to a guy like Castle, who looked like a grown up man for his age both physically and facially. I see a two year kid, which to me further emphasizes coming to a program that will develop.
U haven’t seen him play huh ?

Duke came in very late. I don’t know if they have a much better shot that us. I’d say a race between us and UK. The Meleek recruitment may dictate our chances.

UConn is still there while three others are out.

I still UConn has at least even with UK, and Duke and I think higher up than either. Still not a given but I like UConn chances as much as anyone else

How I imagine Mullins' enjoys this thread.

Can't hurt. Still not a recruitment I feel uber-confident about. Durham-bound.
My phone sends me the daily (most days more than one) hype pieces about Scheyer and "his crew" and their recruiting targets.

Mullins is scheduled to be there for their "countdown to craziness", their version of whatever you want to call the opening night of practice, so he'll be enveloped in hype and we can only hope he's seen what's really important for his future and his development when he visited UConn and won't be swayed by the bouncing students with their cutesy cheers.

Lots of angst lately about how they have yet to receive this year's class' first commitment and I've noticed they've begun to look at 4 star guys whereas they're usually all fives (or close to it). It would be great if the kids are looking at results and noticing that Duke gets pretty much all five stars and yet isn't winning like they did with Coach K.

This point from Field of 68 this morning is new info to me and possibly relevant recruiting Mullins

  • Last season, Kentucky shot 24 3-pointers a game. Mark Pope’s BYU’s team attempted 32 a game, second-most in D-I. The goal for this season’s Wildcats team? 35. Yes, 35. No power conference team has ever attempted that many per game. It’d the most since 2018-19.

If you are a 47% shooter from 3, your good friend is on the team, it's 2 hours from home, a brand name school with NIL, and the style of play will showcase your best attribute, ..... I'd call that an uphill battle. I will be very impressed if Hurley were to overcome these hurdles and get Mullins to be a Husky. Indiana has a relationship with him for years and also checks some of the boxes, but likely is falling behind by losing Moreno, play style, and coaching chops. I think he would be great for us.

While all of that was true, the counterpoint is that UK’s first choice for their coaching opening was Hurley. For a reason.

Yeah…and would be an NBA coach for one of the most prestigious franchises in the league today had he not turned it down.

hometown comfort vs nba aspirations seems like the sales pitches vs kentucky. hurley's OAD pitch makes more sense in this light.

Who LeBron wanted to coach him and develop his son. Which speaks volumes about what the best player in the past 25 years thinks about Hurley’s ability to develop NBA talent.

As we all know recruiting is wacky with lots of angles. None of us know what Mullins is thinking. Maybe he wants to get away from home. Maybe he doesn't like playing with Moreno. Maybe he doesn't like Mark Pope. As with most recruitments it's really hard to figure out what a kid is thinking. I agree it's a long shot just with how many schools are involved but none of us know what Mullins is thinking.

Maybe UK lands Jasper Johnson first and that turns him off. Hurley recruits with intention, and it has to feel good when you’re a recruit and you are being targeted for fit, not just playing the field.

I think this one is UK by a hair right now, for all the reasons mentioned. But if McNeeley lights it up early to show how it can look, and Hurley ratchets it up a bit, that could swing it quick.

I don’t think bombing 3s is a way to get a kid. Who has Pope delivered to the NBA? What has he won with that system? He’s still a bit of an unknown.

Coach him? Nobody coaches LeBron. Yes, he probably wanted Dan Hurley to develop his son.

Be his head coach? I think that’s splitting hairs. The point here is that he wanted Hurley to be on the bench and trusted him with his son. Everything else is noise. LeBron, the Lakers, and KU all wanted Hurley. Recruits should too if they’re wise.

Here’s a nice write up on Mullins’ summer play. He made an impressive 6+ 3’s per game but what’s nice to read about is Finkelstein’s scouting report on the defensive end.

He knocked down 47% of his attempts from three in 3SSB play, even on high volume, making 6+ threes per game.
The other area of the game in which Mullins is a true standout is on the defensive end. He's quick laterally, very active with his hands (1.4 steals per game), and competitive with a scrappy mentality. He's also not afraid to stick his nose into traffic and pull-out some rebounds, on both ends of the floor (3.6 rebounds per game).
The bottom line is that when you have an elite shooter, capable of getting hot at any point, who is also a standout defender, with positional size, solid athleticism, and a competitive mentality….you have an elite national prospect.

The article is wrong, he attempted over 7s per game, but made 3.5 a game at 47%.

Good points. I think in general our fanbase currently is ridiculous in thinking these recruits either come to Uconn or they must be nil hungry

there are alot of reasons i wouldnt fault a recruit
1)future Pt at Uconn- will I be featured like at <insert school>
2)regimented playing style. Been around alot of high level players who wanted to play free flowing and were adverse to excessive x and o's
3)storrs,ct vs warmer, larger colleges (yes, I know the Ray Allen quote)

I think Hurley getting the right kind of guy will adapt their attitude from "me to we". Not sure 5 stars always want that

I certainly don’t think they all are - but there are a few things, when they play out, where you’re pretty damn sure NIL is the driver.

When you jump at a Cal schollie without weighing the field equitably.

When you seem to have a match made in heaven and then add visits to places like Kansas State. I mean why in the world would K St attract any top kid for any reason but NIL?

When your top schools are Kansas St and BYU. At this point if you’re a top 20 kid and KSt makes your short list, it can only be for NIL.

I think a kid like Mullins will have a balanced view on NIL and long term, with a focus on development. For that reason I cannot see him going to IU. Seems like he’s doing his proper due diligence without adding the NIL driver only schools, and weighing between staying close to home and a program that will set him up best in the long term. .

Will we ever know why they decide what they decide?

If they don't like something about a school that recruited them, why would they knock that school and then have to face the derision from the fans of the rejected school, if the two teams should meet up later.

And, if the reason is the coach's personality, or the weight of the cash bag, ditto for the above.

Kids being kids though, they may leak it out, but usually their handlers try to thwart a revealing tweet or interview.

Kids have a right to choose for whatever reason.
