On the other hand, he's a professional. If I have a drug or alcohol problem, my boss doesn't do a damn thing to help me. That's up to my family and friends. I don't see why anyone in the organization really owes Bouk any kind of personal counseling.

Ultimately, you're right. They don't owe him anything. He's a grown man with plenty of resources and support at his disposal, and it's not some huge moral failure on the part of the organization to expect him to show up to work every day - particularly in the absence of any direct plea for help from Bouknight. Basketball coaches aren't psych counselors, and we shouldn't expect them to be.

But we're not talking about painting fences here. This is a job that requires him to fully reciprocate whatever physical and mental investment the organization has made in him - and they, by extension, aren't doing their jobs if they can't recognize how these issues make it impossible for him to do his.

We don’t know nearly enough to say he is an alcoholic or a druggie or suicidal or just immature. You have no reason to determine that Clifford is looking through the wrong lens because none of us know anything about him.

I've tried to stop short of calling him suicidal, but let's just think about it. He:

- Got behind the wheel of a car in a public setting, surely knowing he was well above the legal limit...

- Parked said car in such a way as to block an exit, thereby maximizing whatever disruption he'd caused and ensuring that someone would notice him...

- Left the car running, with a gun in his hand, as he dozed off...

All two days before the start of the season.

I don't like to make assumptions, but it doesn't exactly require a master's in behavioral science to piece this one together. He's putting it on a tee for us, and the only reason he's still going through the motions of playing is that he can't make the horse drink.

what are u so mad about to post this junk?
'Relax Bouk is Ofer so far. Hope is team might be giving some grief.'

why on earth would you be harshing on him like this? does he owe u money?
'Hope is team might be giving some grief.'
are you drunk?
He is someone that needs to understand that actions (and words) have consequences. I hope he learns that lesson

Bouknight 0-5. He just doesn’t work hard enough off the ball and settles for his mechanically good but inconsistent jump shot too much.
'Why couldn't she date one of the women's players?'
germane, ad rem, felicitous.
now, that's pithy.

'He was seeing three baskets.'
scurrilous, vitriolic, derogatory.
a cheap shot.

ur avatar is a beer can.
iifn u went 2 for 2, i would have said something nicer, and not mentioned that ur avatar is a beer can.

general observation: howcum the coppers hung around for an hour, and didn't bash a window in early, say 15 minutes in or so? i don't get that part. you know, unconscious, unresponsive, gun, all that.
seems weird. an hour?
Maybe they saw the gun, knew he was drunk and thought if they startled him he might just grab the gun and shoot

Sure, but it certainly seems like things are beyond just that at this point. He worked very hard to get where he is at and has the opportunity to live out his dream. When a person is in a position like that and continues to act in ways that are damaging to themselves and others, it certainly could signify a much bigger problem. That doesn’t mean there shouldn’t be consequences- there should be, but there should also be available help to get at what is going on.

Again, he is not my client and it would be unethical of me to throw out specific ideas. In general, substance use disorder and other mental illness shouldn’t be immediately dismissed for people in that situation. People do dumb stuff everyday and they can just be throwaway things chalked up to nonsense, but patterns of poor and reckless decision-making should be setting off alarm bells, no matter who is doing it.

He’s lucky in that he has resources, financial and otherwise, available to him and has people who love and care about him. We’ve seen people in the public eye who have had all that and still can’t overcome whatever is going on. I wish him well.

Sometimes suicidal isn't "I'm going to kill myself" and more "well, I'll do things that could result in my death"

It's clear the kid has substance issues;. but I think it would be imprudent to try diagnose the kid past that. He could be suicidal but I wouldn't say any evidence specifically points to that. Dudes get drunk with guns on their person all the time. Shoot, my brother did three years in the pen for that exact thing and he was never suicidal, just an idiot with a meth problem and an AK he should have left at home before stepping on a college campus

Frequently actions speak louder than words.. JB's actions have been the sign of someone asking for help. Hope he gets it.

Something that might have been mentioned but I didn’t see it yet - is it possible the gun is illegally obtained?

With previous DUIs that can be a disqualifying reason to deny a gun purchase, at least in the Northeast.

This would make the charge much worse.

He has a gun permit pending and he didn't need a permit anyways since it wasn't concealed. As of now, gun charges aren't in the equation.

A bad seed, period!

Ya know, I've worked with thousands of kids at my job, and met dozens of formerly incarcerated people in my life through my wife's pro bono work... I can't say I've ever met a "bad seed."

Bad environment? Yup.
Bad coping skills? Yup.
Bad mental health? Yup.
Bad substance abuse? Yup.
Bad seed? Nah.

Are there people out there who just aren't wired the right way? I'm sure. Are they few and far between? Definitely.

I’m not so sure he’s suicidal or has depression. That’s also very hard to dictate on a message forum.

If I had to guess I think he’s got an ego the size of the sun. Rules don’t apply to him and whatever he does, repercussions don’t matter.

So you can’t determine that the first thing is accurate but you’re pretty confident about the second? Why?

Why does your friend being a lawyer give him some special knowledge on this? Is he one of the trashy DUI specialist lawyers? Lol
nah, he's on the other side haha. personal injury stuff. not necessarily an expert, just a guy who has been looking at drunk driving car accidents for 30+ years.

If you Google what you wrote in the second sentence using North Carolina in the search term and omitting Northeast, you will find the answer in great detail.

To my knowledge he doesn't have prior DUI charges, per se, even though his incident at UConn probably involved drunk driving.

Kid should absolutely not be on a basketball court right now. If all the reports are true, he needs serious help. Allowing him to play belittles the issues.

Or maybe on the basketball court, surrounded by his teammates, coaches, trainers etc is exactly where he needs to be

Let’s talk hoops. 0-5 in 14 minutes after shooting terribly in preseason. Who goes G league first. Bouk or Tyrese?

And sometimes “I’m going to kill myself” ends in suicide.
