The more I start thinking about Calhoun, the more my gutt is telling me the crusty ol F has run his course. It's been a great run, this program owes a lot to the hornery egomaniac, but what is the point of him continuing? To hand it off to Ollie? Unless that is 100% the move and if so, announce it now, then time to move on. Him sticking around two more years in what will be a wash year next year and then a rebuilding year the following isn't what we need out of him. That while he'll probably spend stints taking time in both years due to health issues. The lack of continuity and lingering insecurity is killing the program right now. More than anything else, a guy like Roscoe blowing shop just puts more and more question marks out there to anyone considering Uconn. The upcoming year is the opportune time to bring in someone new to rebuild in a no pressure year and to put a more permanent brand on the state of recruiting. Smart business is knowing when to cut bait as cold as it sounds. Until then, Uconn = limbo. Decision making time is now - downward spirals require some nuts.

Right now JC is in the infamous "damned if you do, damned if you dont" situation. If JC were to announce today that he was retiring there would be hundreds of articles written how he quit on the program when it needed him the most. If he announces today that hes staying, there will be hundreds of articles written about how he should have retired because the uncertain future is hurting the program. Thats why for Calhoun's legacy i kind of wish he just walked away after the championship last year.

Anyone thinking JC should consider retirement needs to take another look at the end of the year after returning from surgery. If he is healthy and he wants to stay, that guy I saw on the sidelines is still more capable than anyone we can put there and now add a chip to that shoulder of his and you pretty much a caged animal waiting for revenge on his family. Kinda like to be around when he gets outta that cage in 2013-14 with a full team............

I disagree. If he announces "I'm staying to finish my contract" that removes all uncertainty. It would be even better if he were to announce "I'm staying to finish my contract and will be retiring after the 2014 season", but I don't see that happening. This is turning into a Brett Favre situation, but much, much worse.

I think the thing to do would be make very discreet inquiries to find out what level of exciting young coach may be interested. If it was an elite candidate, I would ask Jim to step aside for his health and remain involved as a foundation kind of guy who raises money for the school and for cancer research. I realize he's had a challenging relationship with some CT press, but he could mellow in semi-retirement and maybe soften up his image a bit.

I dont really know if this means anything but I was at a party offcampus recently talking to Drummond and someone asked him about the situation with whether or not Coach Calhoun plans to stay or not and his response was "Nah man, Coach is gone"...

IMO from the way he said it it doesn't seem to be too promising that Coach Calhoun will stay for much longer, and that's coming from a current player, so its a different perspective from all the speculation from reporters, bloggers and such. Take it how you wish.

BTW first post after lurking for a while.

Alex is leaving because Calhoun is staying. JC >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>into infinity >>>>>>>AO

AD & JL going to NBA, most people expected that (I thought AD would return)

the only question is Roscoe, I don't think he's leaving because JC is retiring, so I simply don't agree with the author.

Please, Roscoe had plenty of opportunities to play the three last season. What you and others conveniently ignore, is that UConn started the season with a starting lineup of Shabazz-Lamb-Roscoe-Olander-Oriakhi. They struggled, thus Daniels, Boatright, and Drummond received more playing time and kids like Scoe and Oriakhi received less. Jim Calhoun has never promised anybody attending UConn minutes. Roscoe didn't earn those minutes with his play early in the season last year. That led to an ongoing carousel at the small forward spot between Daniels, Giffey, and Roscoe. By the end of the year Roscoe had finally started to become his 2010-11 self and that's why he played so many more minutes at the end of the year.

I love Scoe, but he showed very little from an offensive standpoint at the three position last year. The minute distribution shows that the coaching staff shares my observation.
They struggled at least as much with Boatright and Drummond in the lineup and Daniels didn't get near the minutes of those two. The coach's decision led to a bad season and it is hard to see how bringing Drummond and Boatright off the bench would have had a worse result. Drummond is a talented player with a huge upside but we would have been better off without him in the starting lineup for one season.

I'll say this again: Calhoun is on the road traveling to see high school players. He so much as said in an interview with Katz that's he's coming back to coach.

Who are you going to believe? Some rumor supposedly floated at a party and then passed on by a poster on a message board? Or the coach himself?

He needs to say something now. Either #$^& of get off the pot. He is either sticking through his contract or he needs to bail out now. I wouldn't blame him. He probably should have retired after last year. He's proud and stubborn and I know he's doing what he thinks is best, but it's not helping. And if he wanted Ollie as the "coach in waiting", he should have dumped Blaney last year and moved him up so we could get a taste.

Very disappointed with Roscoe leaving. He was probably our best returning player in many ways. Yes, he would have been a 4, but come on, does anyone think he's an NBA small forward? At some point these kids need to get a grip and understand that they are college students, not future NBA players. Spending two more years at UConn would not hurt his prospects in Europe, whatever the position.

And I'll ask you again, why is he "saying as much"? Why isn't he "saying"? What is being gained by the waiting?

How do you know he hasn't told the people who need to know? The recruits? "Hey, Jim, thanks for watching me play basketball for three straight days, but if you wouldn't mind my asking, are you coaching next year?" "Yes." "Oh, because a guy named freescooter on the boneyard says that a person at a party a week ago was told that..."

Where? Post the link. I saw him quoted during the final four as saying that he realizes he cannot wait to announce his decision and that it will be a quick one. He said he'd sit down with Herbst and Warde when they got back from the women's final four and we'd see an announcement then. I'm still waiting.

This coming off Amore asking him about recruiting. Calhoun was on the road and watched a kid play for three straight days.

Twitter: "I have 2 years left on contract. If I have something to announce, I will. Just doing what I do."

How do you square that with this (emphasis added):

Calhoun told The New Haven Register on March 22 that “by the time the college basketball season is over, word will be coming out of Storrs about our future. I don’t think there’s any way we can leave ourselves out there.”
On Monday, Calhoun said he plans to meet with UConn president Susan Herbst as well as new athletic director Warde Manuel sometime later this week after the two administrators return from the NCAA women’s Final Four in Denver. ...
“It’s not just me,” Calhoun said. “We’ve got to get our kids squared away and see what they want to do. There’s an awful lot of [answers] I’d like to have. We need to get it wrapped up and see what direction everyone is going in a whole bunch of different ways. We need to make sure we get on with our recruiting and that’s why I said the end of the basketball season – which is obviously tonight. We have to have some kind of word coming out of UConn.”

And yet there is no word on Calhoun. None. We are being left "out there". By not affirmatively announcing he'll stay the two years, he's fostering doubt and uncertainty.

What do you think he's talking about? He's using the words "we." As in, the future dealing with APR? The future dealing with players transferring or going pro? And, you ignored the quote from Amore where he lays it out that he has a contract and will only make an announcement if there's a change to the status quo. It means he's coming back.

I'm not ignoring the quote, I'm saying it is inconsistent with what he said before. He made it clear that a quick announcement on his status, up or down, was essential to the university. He was right. Now he's saying no announcement is needed, status quo. That's B.S. He needs to decide and announce ASAP. There is no room for doubt.

Yeah, because everything Jim Calhoun does is driven by articles in the press. NOT.

1. He was referring to any number of things, to the APR, the status of students, his own.
2. The comment that no announcement is needed IS an announcement.
