Borges article on candidates

My biggest concern with Hurley seems to be him living off of one recruiting class at URI.

I'd love to see what URI would look like next year without that one huge recruiting class.

Hurley has another very good recruiting class coming in next year. The last thing I am worried about with Hurley is his recruiting prowess.

URI offense looks awful. Almost the same as UConn’s. Really thinking he’s not the guy. Nothing but isolation and hero ball in the last ten minutes. They are about to lose.

I can't do it.

His top 5 players are from 4 different classes. Hes not stacked in one class by any means.

Interesting, but unless I missed it somewhere, no interim coach was named - does that mean Benedict expects something to materialize very quickly?

Usually the AD leaves someone in charge, to at least give recruits somebody to touch base with and keep it from being a free for all (or should I say a free fall) with current players looking to bolt as well.

.-.
Nope.

I thought we initially went with Narduzzi but he ended up turning it down for lack of financial support for his coaching staff (I wasn't on BY when all this was going down).

If we’re talking about poaching coaches anyway, Matt Painter should be on that list. Coach at Purdue, has won their conference and conference tourney, and made it to the Sweet 16 multiple times. Really strong winning percentage (over 650%). The only issue with grabbing him is that he’s a Purdue alum so he might not want to leave what is home for him - but he might like coming to a school committed to winning.

Think all the assistants are still in place. Chillious was associate HC, so probably is now defacto. Don't think it'll matter too much as it depends on who the new coach is.

Just weird it was never mentioned.

Rick Patino? Really?

JC, Steve Pikell or Billy Donovan

Danny Hurley was the only candidate on that list that was somewhat realistic and also someone you could get legitimately excited about.

And as much as I like the job Hurley has done and his pedigree I'd hate to be the stop-over for the possible replacement for Coach K at hated Duke.

After what you've seen on the football side, you have to be willing to take somebody who may coach there for only 3 or 4 years and then move on. Because if he's moving on, then he won you a bunch of games and got you back to the tournament. That's what you need most to stabilize the ship.

.-.
Donovan is clear #1, but I just don’t know how the logistics work for that.

If you can't afford to pay Ollie's buy-out, then you sure as hell aren't hiring Billy Donovan or Rick Pitino.

All of you need to just put down the pipe if you think it's going to be either of those two guys.

Frank Martin won at Kansas State and South Carolina building these programs from scratch in areas where their isn’t a ton of talent. I think he would be a great hire. His teams always play tough.

He seems like a psycho. He's an aneurysm waiting to happen.

Warde said Red Pants was #1. Narduzzi said he had an offer, Warde said no.

In a culture shock, it will NEVER happen, contrarian move, I'd go hard after Mark Few from Gonzaga. Best coach who's never won the National Championship.

He can coach at Gonzaga for life and win 25+ games every year with the occasional deep run in the NCAAs at this point. Why would he move?

I think you need an up and coming young guy with energy, defensive intensity and who can relate to the kids and recruit.

I don't know if I can point to a single thing that happened but he's completely inept. It's awesome that Edsall hates him already.

Edsall hates AD Dave? What rumor mill is this coming from?

You don’t really need a rumor mill if you are paying attention but yeah that’s what the rumor mill is spitting out too.

Is Pat Kelsey at Winthrop no longer considered a good option for some reason? Seems like a great candidate to me along with Hurley.

as far as Hurley goes, you need to be looking at the total body of work not just one game. Hurley wins his conference. That matters more than what his offense looked liked today.
f9rmer assistant at xavier / wake forest. having some good success with winthrop. i like this suggestion. ive seen him on the sidelines, he's CRAZY but I love it.

I agree Pitino is a ridiculous suggestion, but he'd work for bitcoin at this point. No one is hiring him.

And I'd just steer clear of the Uconn board for a few weeks. All the crazies are coming out of the woodwork. Half these people think Calhoun should get the band back together, and the other half think we're going to bring in Pitino or Donovan.

Solid user name choice

Got to agree somewhat. Rhody came apart on O and went into an iso-hero ball mode down the stretch, but they still moved the ball 100% more than KO offense and also actually work the ball into the interior. Their key big man was completely gassed in the end with no legs. But, their D is tenacious and kept them in a position to win. I did like his use of TOs to keep thins under control at key moments....not something Ollie ever had a feel for.

What a terrible list, three legit options and the rest just written in for shock value and clicks. Trollol.

Don't know if this was mentioned but there is a story about Frank Martin on ESPN. He was dying in the hospital when he was visited by a strange nurse that didn't exist. He then miraculously recovered. It is an amazing tale. Maybe someone can link it.

That's not the reason it's a terrible list to me.

There's gotta be better options out there.

The state legislature should step in on this garbage.

It's using state money to further the careers of individual employees.

It's white collar crime.

They gave David the Oaf a raise - he can't hire a basketball coach without help?

It's just an elaborate game of blame assessment. Nobody wants to take responsibility for a bad hire. It's CYA due diligence.

You're right. It's insanity. The thing that I don't understand is that it's not actually a good way to further one's career, because you're now making hiring decisions based not on merit, but on who's in good favor with the search firm. Like others noted, this can lead to hiring guys like Diaco. Why not trust your own judgment, make a good hire, and advance by actually being good at your job?

Because the people running things are a bunch of gutless wonders that don't want to take the blame when things go south. Look at the Ollie situation. Only the people in charge can be blamed. No search firm to deflect the blame.

Yes, he really distinguished himself with the mishandling of the Corey Edsall situation.
