Big East Tournament Scenarios

Interesting scenario Saturday: if Marquette wins against SJU, it keeps the possibility of UConn getting the 2-seed alive, BUT it also keeps the possibility of UConn getting the 4-seed alive. If SJU wins, UConn is locked into the 3-seed, even if they lose to Seton Hall.

So do we want Marquette to win or lose?

Can't decide, brain aneurysm!

The 2 or 3 doesn’t matter much. If we beat SH we are locked into the 3. I’d rather have our fate seal by winning a game we have no business losing.

But the SJU-Marquette game finishes before UConn starts. So if SJU wins, that seals UConn's seed. If Marquette wins, a UConn win wouldn't seal their seed, because it would depend on the Creighton-Butler outcome. So no matter what, UConn's result won't finalize their seed.

Not really. It will determine uniform colors in the semifinals but not much else.

I'm getting a little tired of seeing this. We need to be willing to face whoever's in front of us and not try to run from competition. If they beat us, they beat us. I'm not sure they are anything that great where we would have to hope for some divine intervention.

To me it is just about the theatre of Saturday night at the Garden where we get our revenge. I’m not afraid.

I want Marquette to beat St. Johns.

The only games that matter to us in reality are:
1. We beat Seton Hall
2. Creighton loses at home

What happens between St. John's and Marquette affects Marquette more as St. John's has locked up the #1 seed in the BET, but if Marquette loses and Xavier wins = Xavier gets the 4th seed on tie break vs common and they split on St. John's (both 0-2), Creighton (both 1-1), and then UConn where Xavier is 1-1 but Marquette 0-2.

But whether we are the 2 or 3 is not that consequential since 2 and 3 play in the semis if they win their first game. it only affects the time of our first game and who we play.

But if we beat SHU and Marquette loses, then the Creighton game is completely irrelevant. So, for the Creighton game to matter to us, the MU-SJU game has to matter to us.

I guess you could reasonably say it doesn't matter much but there is a pretty big drop-off between Villanova and Georgetown.

But is the reward of keeping hope alive to get the 2-seed worth the risk of leaving the possibility open of getting the 4-seed? I'm kind of on the fence, but I am thinking it's not worth it. Therefore I want Marquette to lose to SJU. The 2-seed will be out the window, but so will the 4-seed.

Sure or could look it as the better quality opponent gets us the higher quality win for the resume. Other than wanting to avoid a rough matchup StJ team till finals not sure we want to overly shy away from playing good teams before the big dance.

Creighton isn’t losing anyway.

Maybe I'm stupid but I am not seeing how people are still worried about being the 4. Don't we control our destiny for 3? (Aka beat Hall)

Yes the only scenario we end up as a 4 seed is if we lose Saturday

Just beat SHU . I mean they must get revenge for that meltdown. Then we are 3/2 and that is preferred. I think Xavier has a good team, and can knock off SJU.

Looking at the matrix in the tweet above, the only way we could possibly drop to the four seed is if we lose to Seton Hall. Otherwise we are the three, possibly the two.

So take care of business, and let other chips fall.

If this thought enters my mind I think about Lousiville in 2014 and the thoughts quickly disappear.

Agreed. We need to beat these teams if we want to feel good about ourselves moving forward in the postseason. And just so everyone knows the teams we will be playing in R1 NCAA will be better than Xavier, Georgetown and Villanova.

Not if we win the Big East tournament....

I would love for us to cut down the nets after beating St John's in what they believe is their home court. I have a gut feeling however that Xavier is going to make it to the title game.

I don’t want stj to tie our best big east(*, I know) record from last year. em

This game tonight is massive in my opinion, it either puts us on the right side of getting to a 7 seed, or firmly on the wrong side. It's also at a juncture where it feels like we are developing some things that could make us a lot more interesting in two weeks than we looked a month ago (Tarris).

This is a Marquette team we beat away, have a distinct interior advantage and I would think as long as we don't fumble the ball around like it's greased in olive oil again, should win. Tonight marks a game that is really going to show us if this team has a chance. The last two were nice warm ups against meh teams, now we have a real opponent on our turf (a place we haven't played great), on the eve of the post season.

Dare I say, most important game to date. Worst case scenario is that we are a sloppy mess, aren't hitting outside shots and Hurley moves back towards Samson and away from developing Tarris as a core piece.

Marquette has been a really meh basketball team since January. Their best win since Jan 7 has been home vs Nova. They're always tired and banged up at this point in the year. My gutt says we win by 7.

The good news here is we didn't get sloppy, hit three's better in the second half and SJ showed we may have more potential for a two headed monster in the middle like the last two years than we've shown to date.

Now that could prove to be really interesting......

So just to lay it out based on that chart:

1) If St John’s wins, we are the 3 seed
2) If Marquette wins:
a) If we lose to Seton Hall, we are the 4 seed
b) If we beat Seton Hall:
i) if Butler wins, we are the 2
ii) if Creighton wins, we are the 3

Perfect for us software coding types to understand !

(2a) can not happen . If UConn loses to SHU again on senior day, that would be really really disappointing going into the post season. Beat SHU and we are not a #4 seed.
