Big East Portal Additions

St. Thomas was 115 in KenPom. A lot higher than I expected.
I saw them up close in the 1st round of the NIT. This kid did not have a good game but he was being heavily guarded by Seattle U who had one of the better defenses in the country last year. 21 on KenPom

I've very loosely followed them since they moved up to D1. I mostly did so due to their bold statements on their ultimate goal being to join the BE.

While I highly doubt they'd leapfrog a lot of other suitors any time soon, admittedly it is pretty impressive what they've done with their athletics since.

How many rotation players does Marquette have returning?

From guys who were settled into the rotation during conference play, we only lost one non-senior (Tre Norman) to the portal and he played less than 20% min during conference games.

Our only regular rotation players from BE play were our two seniors: Chase Ross and Ben Gold.

So I guess you could say 6 of 9 if you count Tre as a rotation player.

I thought Lowery left.

Given how angry Willard was after his tournament loss, I don’t think he was sad to see some of his players leave. I liked Lindsay, and couldn’t stand Lewis. Willard appears to have replaced both, and probably upgraded. Brennan will be tougher to replace.

I didn't mind Lewis leaving Nova, but I liked Lindsey, and it appears that Villanova let him go over money. I like him better than any of the three guards they picked up.
Lindsey could really score sometimes.. but inconsistent and defensively poor.

The Big East is having an insanely strong portal so far. Seton Hall is dry as usual, but Holloway has to come in late and buy from the discount rack anyway. 247's top 6 classes are 1) Louisville, 2) Indiana, 3) Texas, 4) Providence, 5) Tennessee, 6) Xavier. Which 2 don't fit?

6 in the Top 25, with Georgetown and Butler in Top 50. St. Johns is going to come in strong soon, and Marquette is weird. Other than Seton Hall, there are no clear signs of trouble.

Maybe Goodman was right.

The key issue is what got the teams their high rating on this list. Quality of their additions or quantity?

the ratings we see every year are based on total points awarded to each player so one 4 star and one 5 star may not bring a team as many total points as another team that brings in one 4 star and four 3 stars.

If they were at the bottom of the league this year and/or lost most of their roster, as with PC and and Seton Hall, adding nine players and getting lots of points based on their ratings could mean great things........or nothing. We'll know by second semester next year. PC, for example, will be the fourth team in four years for the center they're bringing in from Northwestern. Maybe he just hasn't found the perfect fit and PC is it, or maybe not.

Lots of excitement created for the fans though.

Here's a guy with an agent he should keep.............took the long view!
If I were an NBA exec, I'd think the opposite, this kid has some doubt about his abilities so he's doing the smart thing and taking the money. Any G-Leaguer offered a 2-way NBA deal who prefers to return to college is immediately suspect in my eyes, if I'm an NBA guy.

.-.
Wow - didn’t see that coming.

Stick it to Cooley
I am not sure anyone needs to stick it to Cooley. Cooley has been sticking it to himself the last 3 years. I know he has had some injury setbacks, but I am still disappointed with his current stint at Georgetown FWIW.

I am sure Providence fans will like this signing in some way. Maybe tonight I will check out Friar Talk.

While that may be true, my point was not what the NBA thought but how smart his agent was to get him into a situation where he'd put up great stats, gain credibility, and get offered great money by hungry colleges. He may otherwise have not done much in college to get an NBA contract and then spend his life in the Serbian B league or the like. He's got four good earning years ahead of him he wouldn't otherwise have.

Not sure he has 4 years left even though he's very young. He graduated in 2023 early at age 17. Then enrolled at Arizona State taking classes while playing in the G-League. If I read this correctly, then from that point forward he had 5 years which takes him to 2029. He probably only has 3 years of eligibility left given his HS graduation year (2023) and early enrollment.

Cooley has done poorly in his 3 years at Georgetown and based on the transfers after this season, it looks like another tough year for the Hoyas. I really don't see how Cooley can make it to year 5.

Georgetown had some tough breaks, losing 7 games by 5 points or less, including their two games versus the Huskies.

Providence now has signed 6 guards for next season:

Vanterpool
Hightower
Byrd
Pate
Mack
Sabol

I'm assuming Byrd and Pate will be used as 3rd guards/forwards. Byrd can probably play the 3 defensively. Pate has the height to guard 1-4 but I don't think he has the weight. This will be an interesting experiment by Hodgson.

Like this fit for Seton Hall as Dartmouth is a defensive-minded team, but needed a guy like Thomas to help balance out the roster. Elite floor-spacer, but also a true three-level scorer who can get to the rack.

Decent player and the Ivy was better than usual this year, but I think the hill is a little higher than usual for Holloway because the rest of the conference is doing well in the Transfer Portal.

If I'm not mistaken he also hasn't even signed a big yet. Just a couple guards and a G/F in Wilcher. Kind of tough to see them competing without solid bigs and his options are dwindling

He left mid season before the team started playing well. He was a starter in non conf and quickly fell off until he was only getting spot min by the holidays.
DidyZaod Lowery get kicked off the team for fighting one of th assistant coaches?

Disappointment is Cooley's brand. He's doing fine.

Isaac Trotter of CBS Sports says the "mushy middle" of the Big East got a lot better through the portal.

Winner: The middle class of the Big East

There was some bad basketball played in the Big East last year, with numerous rosters that underwhelmed or were dead on arrival.

That changed a bit this spring.
