Big East Portal Additions

Isaac Trotter of CBS Sports says the "mushy middle" of the Big East got a lot better through the portal.

Winner: The middle class of the Big East

There was some bad basketball played in the Big East last year, with numerous rosters that underwhelmed or were dead on arrival.

That changed a bit this spring.

Big time - Xavier, Nova, Marquette

As of a day or two ago 247 had Providence with the #6 transfer portal haul, Nova #7, Xavier #8, Creighton #19, DePaul #20, UConn #21. St. John's will obviously move up a lot after they most likely get Diop this wknd and other guys.

Providence has to be a top 15 spender in the country. Big East is screwed with the TV money but Providence and these other Big East schools can go all in on money for men's basketball. I heard there was nothing to worry about with UConn affording guys but it seems it's likely it's some sort of an issue with who we are going for as our other center. UConn is in the unique position where they're screwed by TV money and also has to try and pay at the very top level for men's basketball while also paying for a football team and the best women's basketball team in the country.

Smart year for these schools to go in to flip perception as many have fairly new coaches (Xavier, PC, Creighton, Nova). BE could be interesting this year. Maybe the curse of Val has lifted.

Butler will likely be holding down last this year. Doesn’t say much for Cooley when the rest of league is working. Guy lost his whole team. They need to move off him asap.

It's early but if you figure UConn and St. John's will be tournament teams at the top of the league again. Providence has improved greatly. Xavier. Marquette. Villanova is slowly building a good roster. Creighton has added some nice pieces. That's 7 teams. Even DePaul has brought in some good pieces.

I expect GTown, Seton Hall and Butler to struggle, as of now. But they can improve their rosters still...

if 3/4 of the league is competetive, it's a good thing. Should result in a respectable 5 bids.

Also keep in mind the tournament likely expands to 76. The league’s goal should absolutely be six.

Really rough ballpark prediction:

1&2) UConn and SJU
3-5) Providence, Xavier, Marquette
6-8) DePaul, Villanova, Creighton
9) Butler
10) Seton Hall
11) Georgetown

I'd swap Nova into that top group. For who, not sure.

Providence now has signed 6 guards for next season:

Vanterpool
Hightower
Byrd
Pate
Mack
Sabol

I'm assuming Byrd and Pate will be used as 3rd guards/forwards. Byrd can probably play the 3 defensively. Pate has the height to guard 1-4 but I don't think he has the weight. This will be an interesting experiment by Hodgson.
Kind of belies the popular argument that good player X would never want to come to UConn because it would be tough to get playing time

The tournament is extremely likely to expand to 76 next year.
The venues are already decided for next year under a 68 team format... If they expand, it won't take effect next season.

They would add a venue (Vegas) for the other opening round site. It doesn't affect any other venues.

Still not going to acknowledge anything as if it's decided before it is.

The Big East is getting 7 teams in if there are 76 teams. Next year’s Big East could be the strongest it has been since 2011.
