Big East OOC thread '25/'26

Very excited for today's 1 PM Marquette/Indiana game, even though I'm pissed it's at a neutral court (Chicago).

I'm not sure what to think about either team, so it's a solid heat check for both squads, especially since they've each only played cupcakes.

With their "no transfers" approach to roster building, Marquette is definitely a fun team to follow and root for. Shaka is one of the good guys in CBB.

Less important but is Shaka still sporting the polo over long sleeves and how many times will he step on the court to play defense? Let’s find out!

I'm still getting used to Shaka with hair.

Saturday's results:

Winners: Villanova, Butler
Losers: St. John's, Providence

So far: 18-3 (1-3)

Bright is no bad losses, but 1-3 against the P4 is a bad start (need to win 52%).

How do you fit this in the BE OCC thread? A careless error (which we all make), or just some more of your sensationalist Gossip Guy dish?
Not allowed to post in the college basketball thread.

I always thought Smart's approach was interesting and makes a good case study. Last year Marquette was the only P6 team with no transfers. They were 1 of only 7 (double check the exact number) teams out of 360 D1 teams without a transfer.

Marquette getting torched by indiana, who has a brand new roster. So much for continuity. They're going to be giving up well over 50 in the first half. So much for that hallmark D. The BE may be really bad this year.

Or Marquette is just not that good. If the league gets five teams in (UConn, St. John's, Creighton, Nova, and Georgetown), it will be okay.

There is no chance the league gets 5 teams, that is wishful thinking. Maybe 4. Nova did not look great to me.

When Ben Gold is your leading scorer at the half, you know things are not looking up. This may be the year's Shaka's portal stubborness finally catches up.

Georgetown looks like a tournament team so far. UConn, St. John's, and Creighton will be dancing. Villanova played a top-10 team in basically a road environment and only lost by 5. They also have a really good coach now. I'm not saying the fifth team will be Nova but I also still would not count out Marquette. Shaka has pride. He has made 5 straight tournaments. The league also has zero losses so far against non-P4 competition. St. John's and Providence yesterday were disappointments, and Marquette looks like a disappointment today, but six of the eleven schools in the league have yet to play a P4 opponent yet so a lot is up in the air.

I think this is the season where Smart realizes he needs to embrace the portal. Losing all your high end NBA caliber talent the past 3 seasons and I don't think the guys behind them are as good. Nothing wrong with recruiting high schoolers and developing them but plugging 1-2 holes with proven scorers would help him.

I think big drop off after UConn and St John’s

He should've known that a few seasons ago. He already has his team full of freshmen and guys redshirting for next season.

4 max - Uconn/StJ & Creighton should be in. Then I can see one other team potentially getting in. Gtwon beat a Maryland team that is fully rebuilt and no one in that game could hit a shot. I would not look at that as a high value win. Would love them to do it, but not sold at all. BE has already kind of s the bed in evenly matched games with the StJ loss & this Marquette loss. Need to see quality wins, and they're wiffing already. PC losing to VA tech does't help either.

Marquette loses to Indiana 100-77.
