Big East OOC thread '25/'26

They stink - Marquette fans are already out on this team, asking Shaka to play freshmen to get them ready for next year. I knew they were descending given output of talent with nothing incoming, but didn't think they'd be this bad this fast. With Ross leaving, let's not see if Shaka tries the portal. If he doesn't, it will be a true showcase of stubborness, HW611 style.
And yet 14k+ show up against Central Michigan. Their fans will give Shaka a pass for this year, but he'll need to embrace the portal moving forward.

They're pretty much Chase Ross & nothing, and he's a senior. If he doesn't go to the portal this year, then he's probably never going. Gold is gone too, although not sure why he thought rolling into any season with him as your 5 was going to be a winning formula.

Virginia is very handsy in its press. Matta has to be more animated because Butler can’t win if Virginia can just bump and grab jerseys on defense. That is fouling, not good defense.

Butler plays like a team. They pass really well, and Bizjack is crafty. They don’t offensive rebound well though.

Really need this win for themselves and the league.

Meanwhile Georgetown rolls to 5-0 with their small forward Isiah Abraham getting the start: 23 min, 12 pts, 4-5 FG, 2-2 3PT, 2-2 FT, 5 Reb, 1 steal, 0 TO, 1 foul.

I know they played Wagner but for a kid we had that left to find playing time, he would be head and shoulders above Jacob Ross in the depth chart, Jayden Ross like numbers without the Jayden Ross like fouls.
Next, do a deep dive analysis of his box scores vs Clemson and also against that powerhouse Binghamton.

Odom gets a T, but the refs are now letting Virginia call its own fouls. Matta is letting the refs walk all over him.

Check how he did against the other patsies they've played before anointing him the latest Ryan Gomes. 😊
He may turn out to be good but it's way too early and it was Wagner.

I’m a little surprised that even after 4 years in college CFjr isn’t a full time starter. Corey was very young when he enrolled at UConn but I thought he’d develop into an impactful player
He looked great as a senior in one of those all-star games at year end. Roddy Gayle and some others that were highly rated looked inferior.

Butler is better than recent years. Offensively they feel similar to recent years, where Butler was also pretty good offensively, with maybe a little better individual creating skills. My complaint is that the ball has a tendency to stop in the Butler offense sometimes. Bizjack in particular tends to dribble in place, which is a big pet peeve of mine with point guards. Butler had two shot clock violations in the second half and were close a bunch of other times.

Defensively, they look more athletic and better defensively. Virginia helped by shooting poorly, and their 95% free throw shooter missed 3 from the line which made a huge difference at the end.

Matta is a shell of the coach he was 15 years ago. He can clearly still teach offense, but there is no fire on the sideline.

Xavier is not a bad team. They are not on the same page at times, and there is too much 1-on-1 offensively, but that is the reality of the transfer portal era. Defensively, they are OK. The Georgia loss is going to hurt, because Xavier had that game won. WVU is good, not great, and Xavier has to win some of these games.

Two things I am seeing a lot of this season that drive me crazy:

1) Pull up 3's. Unless you are Steph Curry, these are really low percentage shots, and are likely to be contested.
2) Players rarely use the backboard on floaters or turnarounds. The backboard probably adds 10 percentage points to the shooting percentage on shots inside 10 feet. It is just stupid showboating not to use it.

That was actually the first game this season CFJ hasn’t started for PC. He’s been dealing with an ankle injury so maybe it was precautionary, but still played 20+ minutes so clearly it wasn’t that big of an issue..

Wonder if he’ll be back in the starting 5 after he’s 100%

McDermott had other slow starts and then worked his magic but I just have so much trouble seeing it this season. It was going to be really tough to begin with but losing Jackson McAndrew for the season is just a killer for them.
Has ArizonaHusky analyzed Creighton injury patterns? Is McDermott hurting his players like Hurley?

Monday and Tuesday action (P4 games in parentheses):

Monday:

Creighton vs. Baylor (Vegas)
Seton Hall vs. NC State (Maui)
St. John's vs. Iowa State (Vegas)

Tuesday:

Creighton vs. Iowa State (Vegas)
St. John's vs. Baylor (Vegas)
Seton Hall vs. USC
/Boise State (Maui)
Villanova vs. Old Dominion

Next two days are huge. Really need to go at least 2-1 tomorrow and at least 3-1 on Tuesday.
