Big East January '26 Thread

Rick Pitino was, is and will always be a great coach. Constructing a college basketball team is much different today than it was in the past. There will be some hits and some misses. We experienced a bit of that last year with Mahaney. If there’s one thing that you can count on with Coach Pitino is his teams will be better in March than they were in January. I was at the game against Arkansas and RJ Luis had a John Starks-type game. I don’t think Coach Pitino can be blamed for that.

How did they do in the NCAAs last year? How they doing this year?? He USED to be a great coach. You were and are still using current tense.

Are you dumb??
Why so angry? Unecessary. He turned Iona into a tourney team in two years, he got StJ a two seed in two years. He's a great coach - stop being so ignorant. It's dolts like you that make me continue to push the objectivity thing.

What he's trying to do now in adapting to the portal is hard - winning with a bunch of brand new players, with no PG, is hard. He shot too far to one side, and it's imbalanced.

But you INSISTED they weren't imbalanced the whole pre season. Take the L on this one pal.

When did Pitino coach Michigan? I think you misread something.

Have you watched SJU this year?? He whiffed on the entire team.

I’ve been of the opinion all year that once St John’s gets more time for their roster to gel, they’ll still be a good team. I’m less bullish on them after losing to a BE bottom feeder, but it’s still really hard for me to think that they won’t be able to just out-talent their way to a decent conference record. Even if they’re just a bunch of me-first mercenaries and they haven’t gelled at all yet

But they have to win games. They missed on most of their OOC opportunities and now have a Q3 BE loss. They’re @Butler, @Creighton, vs Marquette, and @Nova in the next 2 weeks. I think they have to walk away 4-0

Doubt they will go 4-0 there. The team last night generally froze outside of Zubi. It's am ominous sign at this stage of the season. It's no longer November. They seem confused on how to generate a look.

Cooley didn’t leave PC for greener grass. He left because his wife made him, or else. Further, Georgetown offered him an absurd 6m per year. At least double what he’s worth, maybe triple. Watch a PC game and then watch a Georgetown game. One team plays in a packed and raucous arena with borderline psychotic fans and the other one is Georgetown.
Cooley is the issue not Gtown, they will always have more money to pay for coaches and players than PC. We were playing in empty arenas from like 2016-2018 too. PC ain’t getting into the ACC because it fills the Dunk. It’s still a small school with a small regional fan base.

I never liked Cooley's style. The offense was grinding, and his players were always fishing for fouls, which doesn't work in the Tournament.

English is a better X's and O's coach, but doesn't seem to have "it" that every successful Head Coach has. I actually like Providence's offense. Lots of movement, and they get enough easy baskets. The team just doesn't have a killer instinct, which means the coach doesn't have a killer instinct.

Right. PC fans show up no matter what. Providence is wildly popular in the state of RI. Georgetown is a mess.

It doesn’t matter anyway. I’ve always felt that in the odd event that the old band gets back together that both PC and Georgetown should be included. If not, no big deal.

I expected to tune into NBC Sports to watch the Seton Hall v. Creighton game and they have Premier League Live on instead. It's a Peacock game and I thought NBC Sports was also carrying all the Peacock games?

Does anyone know what's going on here?

Hey so who forced him to operate this way?

Not all peacock games are simulcast on NBCSN, Chelsea v City was always scheduled to be on NBCSN today

Judging by the halftime score, maybe it's better you couldn't watch. Lol

It is a rock fight (Creighton up 27-18 at the half). Hall really does play hard - Shaheen gets as much out of that group as is humanly possible, but they struggle to score.

Creighton is curious - we all wrote them off early … but lately they’ve won by scoring a lot and now matching Hall’s toughness in this one.

Can BE get 5 bids or is Creighton gonna steal a bid from Hall or SJU? I’d be rooting for them but for their atrocious OOC.

The problem with that question is the best way for other big east teams to earn their way up to a bid is by getting a big conference win that raises their profile.

And that’s not what we want.

Is Creighton still point-shaving? I can’t keep up

Creighton or Nova right now look like they may step into the SJU void and be the second best team in the league. Hall looks like they may come back down to earth. They’re down 16 at home now to Creighton.

SJU can also get it together. They did lose a bad home game - but they did have a chance to win it late on a day when their 3 starting guards shot 5-30.
