Big East January '26 Thread - Take Two

Fire Kim English.

He seems like a nice guy in every interview I have seen of him, I think he comports himself well on the sideline, and I like what I see in game plan and in game coaching, but he is just not a winner. He is kind of like Tim Welsh that way.

This team is too talented to be losing almost every 50/50 game.

He probably needed a few more developmental years before getting that job.

Guy can recruit. He needs a tactician on his staff that can run XO's, analytics and help him manage a game.
He brought in essentially an offensive coordinator from the NBA this offseason, Bryan Tibaldi. Was briefly a Cavs assistant (but had some college experience before that).

It's worked.

Be interesting to see what GM was the year before he got there. If bad, then you could call that a mild turnaround. Simply not enough runway for a High D1 job.

Correct. He even pretty wildly underachieved in the season before he got the PC job from a predictive lens (albeit after overachieving in his first season despite winning less games). His 2 years at GM were pretty similar to Paulsen's run. Tony Skinn immediately did much better, and is wasn't with Kim's guys since Kim took most of them with him to PC.

There’s a part of us that wants Providence to be a sleeping giant which is why they almost beat us, but they’re not. They’re a bad team.

They have the great win at St John’s. After that their best win is..Penn St? After that…Rhode Island? By the way they’ve lost every non-buy game this year outside of those 3

They have good players on their roster but the coaching isn’t there. I like Kim because he’s fiery and passionate but his coaching career has been a 9th and 5th place finish in the A10 and a 6th and 8th place finish the in BE. The good news is he’s really young and has nothing but upside. The bad news is that he is expected to win here, not to lose while developing

They have a lot of individual talent, but it’s all individual. No cohesion or coaching to turn it into something good

If I had to rate which of the other programs would be best for the Big East if they were good:

1) Villanova - most history, big city, fan base extends beyond alumni. Penn State has a lot of alumni in Philadelphia, but Penn State sucks at hoops and Temple is marginalized in a midmajor conference. Villanova has a lot of upside and potential for a national following if it was consistently good again.
2) St. Johns - Capital of the World, wealthy fan base beyond alumni, good, if old, history, no local competition. It would be really good for the Big East if St. Johns became a powerhouse.
3) Depaul - Big city, good ancient history, most upside of any program. Big enough city that it can have a fan base at the same time as Illinois. Huge local corporate market for NIL and financial support if Depaul stops sucking. There is a very high ceiling with this program if it can get out of its own way.
4) Georgetown - Elite academic university with a very wealthy alumni base and it is the only major program in a very big metro area. Virginia is 2.5 hours away, and Maryland has an inconsistent history. Georgetown being good would be a big boost for the league.
5) Providence - Some good history, although it is mostly a history of mediocrity. Providence benefits from a wide-open New England market with BCU giving up and UMass being marginalized. There is a big fan base beyond just its alumni if Providence gets better.
6) Marquette - in a relatively big metro area, very good history, access to lots of corporations for NIL. Good upside.
7) Creighton - Does really well in a small/mid-sized metro area. Like Louisville vs. UK in the state of Kentucky, Creighton and Nebraska are pulling from different populations culturally, which enables Creighton to co-exist and succeed despite Nebraska being a behemoth. There is a ceiling though because the market is not that big.
8) Seton Hall - NY/NJ is a huge market, and there is kind of room for both SHU and SJU, but SHU will always be the little brother. Decent history is a plus. Also, the school is so bad academically that I feel like it makes some fans reluctant to get too invested in the program.
9) Xavier - Good history but crowded market with Cincinnati right there and Dayton close. Ohio State is everyone's daddy in Ohio, and Indiana, Kentucky and Louisville are not that far away. Solid program, not a lot of upside.
10) Butler - neat little program sandwiched between two basketball behemoths in Purdue and Indiana. There is a ceiling on Butler's fan base.

My criteria are:
A) Potential market size
B) Economic profile of metro area
C) Program history to leverage in building a larger fan base
D) Local competition for fans
E) Academics play a role to the extent that non-alumni are more likely to get behind a school with better academics. Not a major issue, but a factor.

Butler that low? They were decent until this decade and Hinkle is a very well-known arena compared to some of these other schools

My ranking was not of the programs themselves so much as the upside value of each program to the conference and UConn.

Butler has a ceiling in terms of fan interest, because it is between two behemoth programs in Indiana and Purdue, with Notre Dame in the northeast corner of the state, and Cincinnati, Xavier and Louisville less than two hours away. That is a lot of big time programs in or right on the border of a medium sized state. Butler is never going to get that much interest, even if they went 25-8 with Sweet 16's two years in a row, and all those programs are a lot of competition for Indiana's corporate NIL dollars.

Villanova and St. Johns have major upside potential. I don't think Butler has the same potential.

A little scary how Nova is handling them in the first half.
They are playing well. Acaden Lewis will win Big East ROY if he continues at this pace and they make the tournament with a good seed.

Kim English wanted a specific high paced offensive style and accordingly hired a Cleveland Cavs assistant to coordinate the offense. He needs to hire a defensive assistant coach who only focuses on defense. PC plays some awful undisciplined defense.

Providence is also playing tonight without Jason Edwards, their leading scorer at 17ppg. Still no excuse for how terrible they continue to be defensively, on pace to give up 90+ points again

Kim English needs to be launched into a volcano, he's a horrendous coach.
