Big East February '26 Thread

It's all good we can lose these 4 games just forfeit and win when it counts.

If there is one program that knows how to win when it counts the most is UConn. So no need to hit the panic button.

The St. John’s thing is disturbing and concerning because I dislike their coach, fans and program. If we don’t put a stop to it and play more physical they can get a better seed. Today they had 44 rebounds vs 30 and 8 more made free throws. They went 3-14 from 3 at 21%, Creighton 6-22 27%, Dix 8 points. They had the game of their life against us.

St. John's is legit, better than they were last season and a completely different team than they were early in the season. Hopkins looks great now, Dillon Mitchell gives them awesome athleticism and versatility and Dylan Darling is huge in their transformation.

I honestly don't see how we beat them now with the way we matchup with them.
I think the real question is are they gonna be able to count on getting a favorable whistle outside of the BE.

I don’t see them getting almost 30 ft a game outside the big east and having other teams getting around 10.

Transitive factor with Creighton doesn’t look great.

It's not even about that. Can't really extrapolate off of single game performances but St. John's figured it out weeks ago and they're ascending, the opposite has happened with us. St. John's was always a terrible matchup for us and now they're becoming an elite team.

UConn's perimeter defense was terrible as Creighton drove to the hoop for easy baskets with no help defender in the lane. Creighton scored 91 points on 10 assists when they normally average 76.6 points on 15.6 assists which tells you Creighton was beating UConn 1 on 1. They shot 49.1% (45.8% season), 47.6% 3 pointers (35.1% season), and 84.3% FT (75.2% season). McDermott had the perfect game plan to exploit UConn's defensive issues and, I think, UConn needs to change the defense otherwise other teams will do the same.

For those complaining about fouls, UConn is averaging 18.7 fouls per BE game and out opponents are averaging 18.0. The problem is UConn's fouls in Big East games are causing more FT attempts per foul:

UConn fouls = 301
Opponent FTs = 371
FTs per foul = 1.23

Opponent fouls = 288
UConn FTs = 290
FTs per foul = 1.00

How is this happening? Probably more missed front ends of 1 and 1s and/or UConn is fouling more than they get fouled when the other team is shooting.

One more stat. UConn has, in BE play, committed 6 or more fouls than the opponent 4 times and they are 2-2 in those games. Two of the games were against Creighton, a team that doesn't foul that much. For the season, UConn is 3-3 in games in which they commit 6 or more fouls than the opponent.

Creighton Jekyll vs SJU
FG 17-53 - 32%
3PT 6-22 - 27%
FT 12-18 - 67%
Holy crap 18 turnovers!

Creighton Hyde vs UConn
FG 27-55 - 49%
3PT 10-21 - 48%
FT 27-32 - 84%

Darling giving them these type of gritty PG minutes is making a difference.

Let’s see what happens in March this year with UConn and StJ and see if the narratives hold up, that UConn is built for the tourney and StJ isn’t. I find them a bit overdone, but if they are indeed hogwash Dan Hurley really needs to start rethinking recruiting, and realize that 2024 was lighting in a bottle.

our defense needs to get back to average at least. It’s has been bad the past couple of weeks.

When every team we play knows all you have to do is drive it to the basket and you will get there pretty damn easily and you will either score or be able to kick to wide open shooters you are gonna struggle.
Or draw a foul to gain FTs.

SJU is better team now. We are getting worse . I don’t how know how we beat them next week. Just a terrible match up

UConn's defense is operated with the purpose of not generating turnovers so I am not concerned with that. Creighton's defense has never operated with the purpose of generating turnovers either which is why I didn't give much weight to UConn only having 5 turnovers. McDermott didn't find some hidden gem by taking UConn's defenders 1v1, this weakness has been exposed since conference play. Hurley even said himself, UConn's defense the last 4 games have them ranked at 160 per KenPom.

I just think Hurley allows teams to stretch and space out the defense too much. Shaka said it last year, UConn doesn't help out too much. He needs to stop thinking about worked for the 2023 and 2024 teams and do what will work best for this team . He has shown flexibility to adapt in his time here. He just needs to show more with this team.

Hold up, this is the same team that just was taken to the wire by Marquette. I have the same worries but thinking about it, let’s pump the brakes on “elite”

They beat Marquette by 6. Have you not been paying attention to Marquette the past 5 games? We're going to have a hell of a time trying to beat them in Milwaukee.

You don’t see how we beat them is quite the statement. We shot terribly and the didn’t blow us out and they were home.

We can start by making open shots and not blowing layups

Literally the game before, 2 point game with 20 sec left and you call that elite?

We didn't shoot terribly. We shot great and that's what kept us in the game. St. John's shot terribly.

You are correct. We shot fts terribly is what I’m remembering. Also turned the ball over 15 times. They also shot 20 more fts than us.

Point stands, we were in that game
