After the way we torched Nova away I don’t have a lot of confidence they will give St. John’s much trouble after last night’s beating. Pitino will have them frantic.
Agreed. I think the tougher game for St. John's will be at Seton Hall next Friday.

I could be alone, but the way I see it, it really doesn't matter how St John's finishes the season. If we do what we needed to do (not a big ask), we will at worst have a share of the regular season title.

We can win the BET just as easily if we're the two seed as we can if we end up the one seed. I'm no more afraid of a potential semifinal matchup with Nova than I am with a semifinal matchup with any other BE school.

I've been delighted by how he's done. I'm not thrilled by how my reaction reflects poorly on me, but I'm not going to hide from my initial negative feelings about him running out on Providence, and those feelings have changed only to the extent that I now I enjoy his poor performance. His comments toward UConn fans and Hurley rub me the wrong way. They seem consistently smarmy, unless I'm allowed to say dickish.
He's not the problem, though the roster construction is poor. The program is really struggling to maintain viability amidst a declining fan base.

Thanks for the AI. I'll rely on what was provided by the club over Google.

Where this gets understandably cloudy is the number of degree and certificate holders outside the undergraduate sphere who lived in DC while studying, graduate, then drop off the alumni rolls. Maybe they're in-town, maybe they moved. But if there were 50,000 alumni, where are they?

Are you a self loathing Hoya?

This site has them at 51,000 living in the area as of 2017. Not sure if that's where AI is getting it from. Your # is way low, it doesn't even make sense.

After what happened with Cooley leaving for another BE job? Yes, they would.
Another completely clueless comment by our friend Ruff Ruff. They would lose ZERO sleep over doing that after what Georgetown and Cooley pulled on them. Nor should they.

This is a business

Last point on this: Georgetown only graduates about 1600 undergraduates a year: roughly one-third stay in DC after school, one-third go to NYC, and one-third go everywhere else, but when you start talking about post-grads and certificate holders (some of whom have more than one degree), it gets cloudy.

Georgetown never was a school with great alumni presence at games. They were a school that uniquely appealed to the Black community around the country. They were DC’s team more than they were Georgetowns. That’s gone now and with the way DC has changed the last 30 years it’s not coming back. The majority of kids that attend Georgetown outside of the athletes simply don’t give two craps about sports.

Georgetown is one of the schools that counts tickets sold and not turnstile. The actual game attendance is way below these numbers. They announced 4,400 for Marquette when there could not have been 2,000 people there.

Your first part of the post is true but the fans will come out if they're good. There's nothing unique about Georgetown or the area. People don't get invested in a terrible products, if the program gets good again the fans will be there.

The worst thing that Gtown could have done was pass the buck to JT3 and gone to that Princeton offense. Talk about losing your edginess. The brand design of GTown at it's height was that it was this country club of a school, with a hoops team that felt like they could win a knife fight.

GTown was pretty good under JT3.

I agree but there is a lot going on in DC sports wise now. They not only have to win, but they need to put an exciting product out there. Cooley has not done either and will never do the latter, and what was pointed out to me recently is that JT 3’s Princeton offense did them no favors either.

Being pretty good and playing a bland, dull style of basketball isn't upholding the brand that school was built on. Brutal hire.
Yep, all those locals that lived the Georgetown brand are long gone and they are not coming back. I can’t think of a once great program more doomed than they are. Not even Cuse is that screwed. They still average around 17k, which is half of what they used to but 3-4 times what Georgetown gets.

Once again, you do not research things before you post dumb things. So you think a guy who won 278 games at GTown (winning percentage of 65%) including 58% of BE games, went to the tournament 8x, and went to a Final 4 is a "brutal hire."

Doesn’t get much better than PC fans taking pot shots at Georgetown on a UConn board
Well, one thing I will always know as bad as it gets for us we will always have fans butts in seats.

“I really don’t care if we win a lot of games so long as I like the style we play.” Said no fan of any team or program ever.
I think the point is that the team style changed as the demographic did in DC and now it’s gone. You must remember the brand that they were, rough, tumble, proud and unapologetic. They were DC’s team. That is gone and impossible to get back. DC was 80% Black in the 80’s and Georgetown was their team. Now DC is about 40% Black and shrinking every year as gentrification proceeds. The vast majority of the alums don’t care and never did about basketball.

He did have a F4. I'd be curious to what Gtown attendance was like that year.
quality sucks but the place looks pretty packed out here, I don't think those Jeff Green/Roy Hibbert era teams had issues drawing fans, especially since they had a heavy DMV presence on the team and they were winning

Attendance had already started dropping by then. I posted those figures above. Still good average attendance but nothing like in the heyday.

i live in DC and have relatives and friends who WERE georgetown season ticket holders—not grads of the school but fans of good basketball. They lived in the MD suburbs and would come downtown for the games ALL the time, including in the JT3 era. They stopped doing so (i noticed because I would get their tickets for the UCONN games). It's actually pretty simple as to why. The team started sucking. The shlep wasn't worth it. And they haven't returned to winning since. If the team gets better the fans will show up again. Not a crazy proposition.

Quick note: i went to the uconn game this year. Brutal game as we all remember. the arena was, i dunno, half full maybe and of that i'd say half or so were uconn fans. Even the big draws aren't filling that arena.

I also think that the GOOD dc hoops scene is basically now just high school because the wizards have really sucked a lot too. There's not really much muscle memory of going downtown for a game anymore

I also doubt any college team will again become the cool program for middle school and high school kids to rep. Georgetown, UNLV, and UNC all had huge fan bases in the popular culture and street wear. I can’t think of anything like that now.

Nope - game has changed too much.

The only CBB brand that still has some of that swag is Duke. Saw the top ten most watched games this year, was a lot of Duke, Michigan, Mich St and Arkansas. We didn't appear.

Meh, he's part of the problem. He just always came across as a used cars salesman. The way he left PC just reaffirmed it for me and I've never been a fan of his "Make the refs get involved" gameplan where his team just starts running kamikaze into the paint and at the hoop. It's right out of the Gordon Bombay playbook.

Yep, Michigan and Georgia Tech had it for a little while too. Duke was seen as the dorks when I was a kid and they're still seen that way, incredible dork longevity.

Most of what you're talking about was the culture of the time. Starter jackets, snap backs, MTV music videos with artists rocking the gear.

There's still major national programs with fans in every nook of the country but all the cultural stuff is gone.

Playing some of our top games on Peacock really hurts the visibility.
