Big East Coaching Hot Seat/Departure Ranking

To be fair, it's largely Ewing's fault that Cooley had to start from that much of a hole.

Not to be a Cooley apologist, but he inherited a team that had pretty much no roster. He took that team and gained two wins over the previous year, and then ten more the year after with his first full recruiting class. This year looks like a wash, though.

Teams turnover their roster every year now with the Transfer Portal. Blaming the last guy is not a good excuse anymore.

It's timing, though. Cooley was hired in late March, which is when the portal opened. We all know March is not the first time coaches are in touch with portalers, so he was way behind from the start.

.-.
Cooley is failing at Georgetown. He’s had enough time to show progress and it’s just not happening. And it’s not happening for Kim English and Providence.

The winner in this situation appears to be 16-1 George Mason.

Georgetown has to be one of the most disappointing teams relative to roster in the entire country. They are 1-7. They still have Depaul and Marquette at home, but neither team looks terrible right now, they are just normal bad. Georgetown has two against Providence, but who knows that you get with that team? Georgetown may be able to upset Creighton or Butler at home. The remaining Xavier game is on the road.

Playing Kim English is typically good for any coach's job security, but their game at Providence this weekend may be kind of a must win for Cooley. It is followed by Depaul, then after that, the schedule gets quite a bit tougher. If he drops the next 2, does Georgetown consider pulling the plug on him?

No doubt, year 3, they have backing and he's underperforming with a decent roster. There are no Devan Carter's walking in. He's walking up to post game presser's claiming there are worse things in the world than losing. He's a BS artist that becomes white noise.

They have already lost to DePaul earlier in the month and didn’t beat them all of last year so I would take away from the easier game grouping for Georgetown

Are you talking about Kim English or Ed Cooley?

I have to differ on a few counts.

McDermott’s season has been derailed by injuries, and he’s having to work harder than normal. The golf course might be calling to him at this point. Put him higher, in 4th.

Shaka is very much on the hot seat. I could see a firing during portal season, if he refuses to use it again. Put him higher, 3rd behind English and Cooley.

As for Shaheen, he can’t coach offense so it’s hard to see him being pushed by most P4’s. Maybe he’d fit at Houston but they’ve already got a coach in waiting. Put him lower on the list, 7th behind Rick Pitino (5th) and Matta (6th).

I can’t see Shaka being on the hot seat after one disappointing season. He’ll get a new job as soon as he wants it. Meanwhile, who they gonna get that’s better?

Didn’t they just renew him too? = big buyout
