My favorite alternative for UConn would be if it were invited to replace an ACC school that bolts to the SEC.
There's a strong push for Clemson to join the SEC because it has such strong rivalries within the SEC.
The same applies to UConn having strong rivalries within the ACC.
I don't believe that conference realignment is anywhere near over.
If UConn doesn't want to pay the $30 million exit fee to the BE & can find a way to wait to see what develops within the ACC in the interim, then perhaps there's a chance that UConn can still end up joining the ACC.
Just like how the Big 12 can change its mind about its past rejection of UConn, the ACC could also change its mind about UConn.
The ACC must be strategizing in its backroom about future realignment scenarios, especially after the Big 12 visited UConn.

Also if Notre Dame football ever decides to join a conference & ND takes their other sports out of the ACC too then the ACC could need UConn to fill the opening.

Hockey has been part of Hocey East for ages. I wouldn’t expect that to change

Other conferences are doable
And Hockey East is one of the two best conferences in the country. Being able to stay in it is a good thing.

I know Geno loves being back in the Big East........I'm sorry if I missed it but has anybody asked him what his thoughts are about a possible move to the Big 12?

Does anyone familiar with the Big 12 possibly extending an offer to UConn have an idea when an offer might be forthcoming?

Some of the recent articles mention that the Big 12 will ask Colorado & another of 4 Pac 12 schools in the 4 corner states to join before asking UConn.
The reports are mixed about whether UConn will actually be invited or not.
One article said that all of the Big 12 schools are in agreement about inviting UConn while another said that the basketball schools are divided over extending an invitation to UConn.
UConn was said to be in the 2nd tier of schools to be invited, yet Colorado is being said to be on its way to join for 2026.
And a report said that Arizona would jump at the chance to join the Big 12 which if true, could delay UConn being invited since the Big 12 is more interested in targeting Pac 12 schools at the moment.
The Big 12 is playing it close to the vest & only click bait rumors seem to get published.

It could all depend on which schools are asked first & when will UConn be ready to join.
If UConn isn't interested until after 2026, then that could be a reason why they may want Pac 12 schools first.
Think about it, $30 million is a lot to pay the BE in exit fees just for UConn not wanting to delay joining the Big 12 for an extra year.
If the Big 12 is believed to want to expand to 16 teams eventually then when could be a matter for negotiations.

Another factor to consider.
When SDSU sent a letter to their conference simply announcing that they were interested in switching to another conference, that conference is now withholding over $6 million of their annual payout money.
That led the Big 12 to announce that they were not inviting SDSU ti join even though it was rumored that they were going to invite them.
That means that just by announcing intentions to leave a conference too early can cost a school a lot of money that they need for current operations, even if withholding the money is being disputed.
Invitations are probably privately pre-arranged so that both parties already agree in principle that the invitation will be accepted before even being officially offered.

That is directly contridicts what this same Chris Johnson said on twitter from Sunday night:

"I can confirm that UConn will formally announce their invitation to the Big 12 sometime this week per league sources. More details to come."

What a difference 24 hours makes!!!! (HuskyNan's is more current by almost exactly 24 hours than my quote here)

They're basically saying that UConn football has little value because of 11 consecutive losing seasons & is one of the worst teams in the nation..

July 18, 2023 - Is Arizona stopping UConn from getting a Big 12 all-sport invite? How resistance to bring Huskies on for all sports could kill the deal

After 2026 the exit fee drops to $15 million, so the savings, potentially, would be also equal to $15 million. The exit fee can be paid over four years, without interest. That means that the cost differential is $2.75 million per year. The big 12 media distribution is $31 million per school per year. In addition to that, each school receives a $15M distribution for college football playoff participation. That means that the total distribution per school in the big 12 is approximately $47 million per school per year.

The current big east media rights distribution is $4 million per year. It does not get a share of the college football playoff money. Thus, the differential in annual conference earnings between Connecticut in the big 12 and in the Big East is $43 million a year.

The potential savings of $2.75 million for four years isn't material. If the big 12 does ask us to join, and it's not clear that they will, delaying our joining until after 2026 does not make sense financially.

Cracks me up - Colorado has been horrible for many years as has Arizona in football. Those two schools have never been mentioned as playoff teams.

It not about being horrible in football. It’s about fanbase passion in football for mediocre seasons by their schools. How many will travel to a bowl for their 6/6 school?

How many fans attend games? How many fans tune in for games. . How many fans will tune in to watch other conference games? How many fans will Watch a conference network? How many fans will buy a conference hat or T-shirt?

It's about media markets. The Phoenix media market is twice the size of the Hartford market. More potential eyeballs = more media dollars.

Me personally, I think UConn's best bet is when Clemson and Fla St finally bolt the ACC, as the remnants is a basketball-strong conference replete with former Old Big East members. UConn to the Big "12" doesn't make geographic or financial sense unless/until the Big "12" finds several other east coast targets.

There's not one school in the B12 I'd be excited to watch UConn WBB play. Not one.
Not one school in the B12? I can think of four, Baylor, Iowa State, Oklahoma State, and Kansas. OMG!! Have you been to Allen Fieldhouse (Kansas)?

I think we had more fans than you when we beat you in the bowl game. I get that times have changed, but they’ve changed for everyone.
