Big 12 season thread ('24-'25)

Neither do the players obviously. This is a combination of a coach being consistently unable to have her team perform and more importantly a shortcoming on the players' part and not being able to internalize coaching.

That said the dysfunction in the dirty t still generates better results than the absolute catastrophe and dumpster fire underway and supervised by the very nice coach from Delaware.
I'm immediately adding "Dysfunction in the dirty t" to my list of titles I'm considering for my next album or short story collection. Has a nice ring to it :p

Iowa State's 945-game streak of making a three-pointer ended in Tuesday's win over Texas Tech.

The idea of ISU not making a three pointer is a concept that is hard to compute. Wow.

Sun Devils should accelerate their descent into the basement Thursday in Lawrence. They're understandably a double digit dog. This game will symbolize the road to a third consecutive 20 loss season and I wonder why ESPN doesn't pick Adair and the Sun Devils for hard knocks.
Both teams will likely be shorthanded. Fauntleroy serving 1-game suspension for the ejection against Baylor, and Nichols probably out w/ a back injury suffered against Colorado. Someone's going to have to step up for Kansas, if Nichols can't go.

I agree. Coach Fennelly pointed out they only attempted seven, and of those, only two came as a result of a play designed for a three pointer. I had the game on for much of the second half, but I wasn't paying close attention, so I wasn't aware of the situation. I'm a big ISU fan simply because I so enjoyed watching Crooks and Brown as freshmen last year, and I like the team's style of play. The team had a spark last year that I found intriguing, but it seems to have been muted somehow this season. It could be my imagination, but something seems to be missing this year. Maybe a Cyclone fan could chime in to tell me whether I'm right.

I haven't watched them a ton, but some things can be gleaned from stats. In 3PA they've went from 54th to 24th. In 3P% they've gone from 6th to 57th. So they're shooting more threes and making them at a worse rate. In fouls they've went from 46th to 222nd. So they're fouling more.

Last year
This year

Their main losses were Belanger and Diew. And I guess it's possible worse production is coming from whoever got Bristow's minutes.

Ice Brady has also been challenged with injuries for the Sun Devils. That said a depleted KU squad would have no difficulty against a full strength Sun Devil team. KU coaching staff has prepared for the confused, disoriented, fouling defense that Adair tolerates which may be a part of the reason why the nice coach from Delaware's team is a double-digit dog on the road.

In the 19 point loss at home to the Bears, ASU scored 59 on 37% shooting. 6'7 Kennedy Bascom had two rebounds, two points and two 3 points attempts. Ice played and she and Ty had 33 of the Devils 62 attempts from the field. The Bears destroyed ASU on the boards.

I'm guessing Ty Skinner puts up 30 to 32 shots, the two bigs for the Devils should combine for six rebounds and perhaps six three point attempts (one make) and depending on officiating the entire Sun Devil team may foul out before the end of the third quarter.

It's long long odds the Sun Devils will be in this game by the second half and if some sort of bizarre upset occurs the folks in Lawrence should be understandably upset and we may see a burning Kansas situation.

Going into the season I thought ISU could lead the nation in three-point percentage with Brown, Hare, Hansford, Harris, and Joens on the roster. They lost Hare but that’s only one reason the shooting has been lost. It’s been a little puzzling to see. Fennelly doesn’t seem to know how to use his talent this year.

Yeah, something is just "off". Maybe they can find the mojo they had at the end of last year but they have looked curiously "checked out" in some games. Doesn't help that PG Emily Ryan is on restricted minutes and right now that seems to be at about 24 minutes a game. I some games the team looks lost with her on the bench. Usually they are top in the league in free-throw % and three % but this year they are just average.

Sunflower State not very welcoming for the Arizona schools.

Beginning with intrepid Sun Devils under the leadership of their nice coach. Adair leads her team to a 25 -point loss as the Sun Devils have more turnovers (20) and more personal fouls (19) than made field goals 18. So while I realize that Houston and UCF are horrible by any number of metrics the team from Tempe is in their strata. If as you loses by 25 to KU, I wonder how bad the KSU score will be?

KSU had fun playing with the kitties although the kitties had no fun. Where to start? Well Cunningham fouled out again after making 4 shots. She and her mates really did a good job on Lee however. Will Barnes' team have any better luck against KU,?

You've got your Kansas schools mixed up.

Hard to keep them straight..... Maybe it's because my brother was born in Topeka. Who knows.... KSU is real good right? KU is just good enough to whoop the heck up ASU? Or is it the other way around. I don't think it matters cuz I don't think either Arizona school can beat either Kansas School

Kansas St. is the better team. Probably the odds on favorite to win the Big 12. The rock, chalk thing is KU. You'd get some really dirty looks if you said something about that if you were in Manhattan, KS.

"This year" Or even "Recent History". Last victory vs. Kansas was in 2015, with 2 losses since.

K State is a good team. I'm not fond of Mittie, no particular reason. Rutgers played and beat his team at TCU in the NCAA's and Vivian explained to the fan club before the game that there was a "wrinkle" to his style of play that made preparing difficult, apparently in general. No idea if he still does whatever it was.

Kansas OTH is more up and down, I would say. I'm guessing they are and will remain a solid middle of the pack conference team, sometimes moving higher for a season or 2.

Like every team, NIL and all the other considerations going forward are going to have an affect.

We were considering going to the Kansas games as a road trip but decided to do Utah and Colorado in a couple weeks instead. We have been in Missouri / Kansas City a couple times in the last few years and probably will go to the Big 12 Tourney there in another year or 2.

I think both would be challenging road games for the kitties. If you're making it a road trip in spite of the weather it should be fun. I've always found Utah to be really beautiful.

As the season trudges on for the two Arizona schools I certainly do not hope that the dirty t is facing the same prospects that we've suffered in Tempe since the retirement CTT. No amount of nil will help the Sun Devils until there's a coaching change and more importantly a commitment from the administration to support women's basketball. The commitment proceeds the coaching change as no decent coach is going to show up in Tempe without some sort of assurance there will be a commitment to the program.

The dirty t on the other hand always supports their basketball and I suspect even more NIL would be available for the right prospect. I think there must be a growing doubt in people's mind whether Barnes is the coach.

So I'm the second half of the vacation to the Sunshine State the Sun devils will notch another l on their way to a third consecutive 20 loss season. In fact looking at the schedule other than UCF it's hard for me to see any prospect for a win although given the up and down, down and down season with the kitties we might be able to get a split particularly if Cunningham falls out in the pregame shoot around.

Was watching Iowa/Nebraska and checked the box at half of the KSU/Arizona game and saw Lee only played 5 minutes and wasn't in fouled trouble. I've noticed Mittie seems to be metering her minutes this season (a lot) but thought maybe she had been injured. Final shows she played 20 minutes without much scoring but had a million blocks.

Looking at her individual stats and she is only playing 20 minutes a game, I wouldn't have guessed that low. Will be interesting to see how Mittie manages minutes versus ISU (two games) and TCU. Not sure if we have any KSU fans here or not but I am wondering if she can't play more or if they are trying to protect her knees/ankle. Seeing her limp around some years was hard to watch.

There may have been something nagging in the first half, but whatever it was, she played 15 in the 2nd half. Guessing it wasn't too bad. I thought Arizona did a really good job defending her last night, not even letting her get the ball. She didn't have a FG attempt until the 4th quarter. That said, she was a big difference for us on defense. 8 blocks in the game.

On the year, she has definitely been on limited minutes. A bit of that has been foul trouble, but we have definitely saved her. I think a lot of that has been trying to save her and have her as fresh as we can late in the year. Bringing in Taylor out of the portal and having Lester develop a bit has really allowed us to do that.

I didn't realize that Kennady McQueen has been out for several games for Utah. That might be a factor in their recent struggles. Down BIG @ TCU tonight.

Utah trailed by 21 at the half, I think the deficit was as much as 24. They came storming back in 2nd half. Cut the lead to 5 or 6 several times. Kneepkens had a huge 2nd half. TCU is gonna hang on though. Kneepkens scored 21 of her 26 in the 2nd half. Van Lith had 24, 23 for Prince. 81-73 final.

TCU improves to 19-1. They got hammered by South Carolina, they do have that big win against Notre Dame. Next 4 are against Oklahoma St., Baylor, Iowa St. and Kansas St. 3 of the 4 are on the road. Will be interesting to see where they stand after that stretch.

Absolutely. Total lockdown defensively on the kitties from the dirty t. KSU had plenty of offense from other sources. While UofA is a middlingI thought the defensive effort against them was really impressive.

Thanks. Read later that she did tweak something earlier in the game. Being a Minnesotan I have a soft spot for the Minnesota gals, especially one's that were sort of unheralded recruits like Lee and Iowa's Monika Czinano that turned into really good players.

Ready for ASU/KSU tip. The anticipation is breath taking. Fittingly the Sun Devils are wearing black - just as one would to a funeral. Wait, Ice Brown nails a jumper to open the game. Could this be the upset of the day? The week? The month? The year? The decade?

.-.
ASU, a 32 point dog, is hanging with the Wildcats (kitties?) Understandable that KSU would be looking past the woeful Devils so the second quarter (and half) will be a reality check - for both teams. Ice Brown has 10 points on 4-5 shooting and one wonders where that KSU defense is? I mean, the Cats closed down the kitties earlier this week. ESPN plus just flashed on the screen Tasha Adair was the 2021 CAA Coach of the Year. Hum. . . .the Pac 12 and now the Big 12 are not the CAA. . . .so. . . .is this going to be the signature loss for Adair and the Devils - in the face of predicted -32 point ASU keeps the loss to single digits? Do you believe? Will the Wildcats wake up? Or will they be kitties?

Iowa State got smoked in the 1st quarter and Morgantown after that the game was never really in doubt for WVU. ISU was without PG Emily Ryans which compounded the ISU issues with the press but the WVU's half court defense was also really good. When the game was decide in the 1st half WVU gave ISU almost no good looks from three while also frustrating Audi Crooks in the paint.

KSU, like true cats, spent most of their home game versus ASU playing with thir prey. Another odd minutes played by Ayoka Lee, only 13 minutes and no rebounds.

The other cats playing today, Arizona, are not messing around and looking to kill the Jayhawks. Up by 14 at the half in Lawrence, KS.

Unfortunately for K-State this one was pretty costly as it sounds like a more long term injury for Lee. Coach Mittie made it pretty clear after the game that this wasn't going to be something that was just a week or two. Horrible timing for the cats, coming up on their toughest stretch of games in the Big 12. This team is built to handle her absence much better than last year, but she is obviously a huge loss.

Was about to post this too. Like c'mon......one player who deserves one healthy season. :(

Well, crap. She's had the worst luck with knee injuries, and last year the bad ankle. :(

FWIW, If you watch 2Q, there's no obvious point where Lee gets injured. She's limping around a bit, but not dissimilarly from what we've seen this season and last
