Per Twitter. From legit reporters, including Brett McMurphy.

TCU has been invited to join the Big 12 Conference and is expected to accept the offer for the 2012-13 school year, college football industry sources told CBSSports.com.

TCU was scheduled to join the Big East on July 1, 2012, but instead will join the Big 12. By leaving the Big East before it officially became a member, the Horned Frogs will have to pay a $5 million exit fee but is not bound by the Big East’s 27 month requirement for notification.

Per ESPN insider:
Update: It didn't take a week or ten days as Oklahoma president David Boren speculated regarding Big 12 expansion. It only took a matter of hours this morning for the Big 12 expansion committee to strike.
Kirk Bohls of the Austin American-Statesman tweeted, "Big 12 presidents and chancellors have voted to invite TCU to join the league, should be finalized over next several days."
Update: It's only a matter of time. Once the messy divorce from Missouri is complete, the Big 12 is clearly ready to move on and quickly.
Oklahoma president David Boren told The Oklahoman "the league's expansion committee, formed a couple of weeks ago, is narrowing down targets and has 'three or four good choices.' It could be ready to offer and accept invitations in 'a week to 10 days.'"
Those "three or four schools" the Big 12 are considering still appear to be BYU, TCU, Louisville, Cincinnati and maybe even Tulane (okay, that's five but all have been linked to the Big 12 at one point or another).

This is how you expand. This is how you operate. Quick, clean, easy.

The Big East? No shot. None. That's what nelson, bless him, could never understand. They were too dumb to live, too real to die.

Boy can the BE look any more stupid? That meeting on Sunday must have been really awful!

Twitter is also blowing up that there are supposedly two announcements coming from the Big 12, and both could be announced within hours of one another.

The first is, likely, TCU. The second? Hold onto your hats.

Wow, talk about all the pieces falling into place for TCU! 18 months ago TCU was stuck in no-where land. Now they are joining a BCS conference and will get home games with Texlahoma! They must be besides themselves at this point. They were dealt a pair of dueces on the deal and were able to catch a 2 on then river for a full house. Everything fell right for TCU to end up exactly where they wanted to be! Congrats to them!

Plus, after this last week, I can't imagine the abuse that TCU fans will be giving to SMU with this news!

Well those who thought the Big East would survive can put that thought to sleep.

TCU to B12 makes too much sense for them not to take it. hopefully the B12 will focus their search on former SWC teams more than BE teams. at least we get a $5 million parting gift.

Looks like UConn should stay in the BE for all sports except football. Now we become and Eastern Independent in football and schedule the best teams that we can.

The only reason Texas agreed to TCU is because they lost A&M. I highly doubt they go for other Texas-based schools. It's likely to be BYU, Louisville, and VWU if they are trying to get to 12 (and Missouri leaves).

Looks like "beg harder" isn't working out for UConn.

Even with this news, the Big East is still not dead (cue the scene from Monty Python). A conference with Louisville, WVU, UConn, Rutgers, USF, Cincinnati (and whichever random schools you add) still keeps a BCS bid. We will clearly be the worst BCS conference and be picked last in every BCS bowl selection 'draft', but I stil don't think the Big East loses their AQ bid. The BCS does not want to attract that type of attention and focus from the press and politicians.

That being said...please get us out of this hell hole Herbst!!!!

So are you pinning TCU leaving on UConn's lack of commitment rather than the fact that Texas based school would rather play big named local teams like Texas and Oklahoma and not fly out to the east coast for non-revenue sports?

Or am I misunderstanding what your point is?

And with this news...the chances of Syracuse and Pitt getting out of the Big East before the 27 months grew even smaller. There is no way the Big East can let them leave early after losing TCU. This is bad news for Syracuse, Pitt, and the ACC. By the time that Syracuse and Pitt leave for the ACC, the conference situations will look much different.

The only chances the ACC has to get them earlier is to completely dismantle the Big East (ie UConn/Rutgers to ACC, Cincy/UL/WVU/USF to the Big 12). Otherwise, Syracuse and Pitt are stuck here for 27 months!

I was thinking that. Finish off the BE and you can have the schools next year.

Wow. Terrible. Maybe. But now we don't have annual road trips to Texas. Which is good for everyone except football. And we don't have TCU's crappy basketball team or try to figure out how to do a 17-team tournament with byes and double byes.

Yes, yes he is. If you had any doubts as to whether he should be taken seriously, I think they have been put to bed.
