Happy to hear you tried Il Pizzaiola & enjoyed it. Ron, the owner, imported the oven from Naples, even bringing in Italian workers to install it.

If you're still in town, give Union Pig & Chicken a try. I always found CT lacking in good BBQ restos (takeout stands were better than sit-down places). UPC is pig-out BBQ run by a Top Chef quality kitchen. Fair prices too. Can give other recommendations if interested.

And Pittsburgh has an "h". We're touchy about that. This ain't Massachusetts!

I work in Essex and live in Madison. I will be going to Grand Apizza in Clinton for a pie. Hope it travels well for the 20 minute ride home. This thread has me wanting this pie from Grand.

I'm reminded to the start of an old Cheers episode when Lilith was pregnant (I'm paraphrasing the script since I haven't seen it in years):

Norm: "What's wrong Frasier?"
Frasier: "Oh, Lilith has been driving me nuts. She's having her pregnancy cravings again."
Norm: "That's too bad. Women are crazy with those hormones and everything."
Frasier; "Yeah, she just had to have pizza. And not just any pizza. I had to drive 45 minutes to the north end to get this one particular sausage pizza from this place DeNapoli's."
Cliff: "That's crazy. What's wrong with women, anyway?"
Norm: "Yeah. And what's so special about this one place?"
Frasier: "It's this great little pizzeria, all their ingredients are fresh, they make everything by hand. Their sausage pie is the best in the city."
Norm (checks watch): "Is it closed?"
Frasier: "No, it's open late."
Norm (grabs jacket): "I am kinda hungry. Where is this place?"
Frasier: "Well, I can drive."
Cliff: "I'm coming too."
Frasier: "It's a helluva pie!"

(Entire bar clears out)

I've been to the ones in Syracuse, Rochester, Troy, NY and Harlem. All were similar, and they have very high quality BBQ. I have no hankering for anything down south because of Dino, but when I go to NYC, I will go to Blue Smoke instead, which is great.
 
Not sure if it's been mentioned, but when talking second tier, Sorrento's in Hamden is pretty solid. No atmosphere to speak of and the pies can be a little greasy sometimes, but overall, if you're looking for quick, fair prices, and pretty good quality definitely gets the job done. Their eggplant parm is really good too.

For my money, the best pizza in CT is still Sally's. My dad was good friends with one of the family's daughters at Hamden High (and the then Michael J. Whalen Jr. High beforehand), so he won't even hear of going to Pepe's or Modern. All three are pretty damn good though.

Not a single mention of Ro's in Watertown? Not a thin crust pizza but a very tasty pie none the less! Harry's in WH also has a very good pie!
 
Harry's opened a place in Glastonbury a couple weeks ago. We went last night , had a cheese pie and the West Hartford special. Great thin crust, good pies. 4 places in Glastonbury to get good pies are Giovanni's(sweet and spicy sausage), Harry's, Luna and Whole foods(any of their pies with roasted tomatoes). I grew up in Fairfield County(Wilton) and my faves growing up were, Arcudi's (sicilian), Jordan's.
 
Has anyone been to Lido's in Meriden? I'm going there today and haven't been in over 10 years. What should I expect?

I'm getting pizza tonight. Watching a dvr of the game. My wife couldn't watch it live! Too stressful. So she twisted my arm to watch it with her once I told her we won. And she wanted pizza. Great wife I have. Of course down here in SC pizza is good but not Ct good. So I'll just have to suffer.

Just don't slam on the brakes and take corners easy or you'll all the sauce and topping
on one side of the pizza.

Visiting Cheshire tonight. Had Rossini's. Their sausage pizza is outstanding, as good as I ever remember it.
 
For a basic slice of pizza (not the crazy 8-topping stuff). My favorite that I've had in CT would have to be Domenick and Pia, in Waterbury.

Lido's was never a disappointment when we ate in. The pizza's are pretty good, too. They were in our rotation when we lived up there. There are many pizza joints in Meriden and I don't think we found the best...not that we really hunted for it. I hear Zorba's is really good.


As for the Grand Apizza pie we ordered from the Clinton restaurant. We did mozz, fresh toms, brocolli and mushrooms. It was okay. Decent. Not better than North Madison's Portofino's.

I'm just kidding - if you want the best pizza in Connecticut, you just head towards New Haven. And then keep driving through New Haven and don't stop until you're in New York.

Then buy pizza anywhere, get back in the car, cross the Connecticut border and eat your pizza wherever.

Sally's, Pepe's and Modern are all about a zillion times better than any place in NYC. I've lived in NYC for 13 years. Great town. Better than New Haven in all ways but one. Grimaldi's, Lombardi's, John's, Patsy's -- they're Pizza Hut compared to Wooster Street pizza. I'm not provincial; NYC is my home. It's just that the pizza is wildly overrated while Wooster St pizza deserves every accolade it gets. Frank Pepe figured out pizza. And his nephew Sally copied it (and IMHO slightly improved it).
 
I can report a triumphant return to Da Legna for a major feast last night. We had a large group so I got to sample six different pies and several small plates and salads.

All the pies were excellent. Crowd favorites were the Patata (Mashed Potato, Spinach, Bacon, Mozzarella, Smoked Gouda), Vongole Casino (Onion, Green Peppers, Farmland Bacon, Fresh Shucked Clams, Fresh Mozzarella) and Figa (prosciutto, Gorgonzola cheese, fig preserves, fresh mozzarella, truffle honey). My personal favorite was the house-made sausage and mushroom; I wanted the broccoli rabe and sausage but apparently there is a freeze that is causing problems with broccoli rabe availability, so they were out of broccoli again (as they were when I visited for lunch on Wednesday). The sausage was excellent though, so I'm glad I stuck with it despite the unavailability of the broccoli rabe. The fresh shucked clams on the Vognole Casino were also particularly good.

The clear standout of the small plates was the Wild Mushroom Quesadilla with Truffle Sour Cream. Other notables included the Crispy Slab Bacon with Golden BBQ Sauce, Butternut Squash Ravioli, Baked Meatballs, and Basil Ricotta Gnocchi with Eggplant Caponata. I also had several good bites of different salads, but it's not fair to bring salad into this discussion.


The place is very reasonably priced too. I definitely recommend it.
 
I agree, I've had pizza from all over on various business/personal trips. If I only had one choice Modern would be #1, Pepe's #2 and Bar, Sally's right behind.

I'm a little worried about the restaurant thread. We're just giving Pitino a bunch of different options for places to eat and **** our waitresses.
 
I'm guessing Franklin Ave and even Wooster St has a blockade up with Ricky coming into town
