Haven't read all 40+ pages here but for Greek Style Pizza Lovers in Central CT, I highly recommend:

Town and Country Pizza - Farmington Ave., New Britain, CT.

I absolutely love the "Special" with all the meat and veggies.

Give it a try, its worth it.

By the way, just up the road towards the Farmington line, is a new and really good Ice Cream shop: Frisbees Ice Cream. Its part of a multi-business development on the New Britain line.

Anyone here try Sergio's in Hamden? I don't live down there anymore so I rarely get to Hamden. And when I have stopped by to say hi, I always get the veal. Good god I love veal and their veal was awesome! It was opened by my father's cousin and his children still run it. I really don't know how the pizza is.

Makes a good pie. Nice place (miss the salad bar though).

Love their NY Style Calamari App.

Does Pepe's take reservations or is it first come first served?
No reservations. Get there before 5 most weeknights and you'll be fine; the line usually starts to grow gradually after that.

Service is generally old school and brusque, although usually less so than Sally's. If you are not ready to order when the waitress comes by the first time, she'll turn on her heel in an instant and you may not see her again for five minutes or more. That will be repeated if you are not ready the next time, and so on, and so on...

Just go to The Spot next door. I believe it's actually the original location and doesn't have a line and is of the same quality. Unless you just really want the experience of standing in line.

True, but only open Friday, Saturday and Sunday these days.

Well, now I know where my new go-to pizza spot in Storrs is.

I'd expect quite a crowd that day with all the kids home from college.

I'm going to New Haven this weekend and I'd like to do a pizza tour. I've got sat lunch and dinner and Sunday brunch to take down some pie. I'm thinking 3 or 4 places. So far I've read: Modern; pepe's; Sally's and something like Zuppardi's Apizza.

Where should I go?

I would add BAR in New Haven to Modern, Pepe's and Sally's and skip Zuppardi's, which is in West Haven.

I only know Zuppardi's by reputation among friends who grew up in West Haven and held it in high regard; I don't know how it is considered now except for a general sense that it is still solid, but I don't know that it warrants going outside the core four of New Haven.

If I you're going to travel outside New Haven, Bufalina in Guilford would be the only one different and potentially better enough to warrant it imo. That would only be Saturday dinner because they aren't open for lunch or on Sundays, and it's a tiny place, so I'd call for reservations, like now.

Otherwise, you're fine just sticking with BAR, Modern, Sally's and Pepe's in New Haven, keeping in mind that tomorrow is The Game, so there are a ton of Yale and Harvard alumni in town. Most will be at the game tomorrow afternoon. Pepe's will have the most potential for a line, so lunch on Saturday or very early dinner is probably best. White Clam (with bacon if desired) is their most unique and signature pie, but everything is great.

At BAR, try the bacon and mashed potato (I prefer it red, but many get it white). They also have a great salad. And good beer. And they will also be crowded.

Modern always has a couple good and fresh New England Brewing beers on tap, so that's a another consideration. It will be busy too, but it is larger and they move people faster. Everything is great there. They also do a nice job with the white clam--second to Pepe's there imo.

Sally's is the wild card. I drove up Wooster St. on my drive home at around 6:15 tonight and they had no line, but the line at Pepe's was down the street. If you are going to Pepe's you might as well try Sally's too if time and lines permit, but I don't think they are open for lunch, so that might be a good call later Saturday after early dinner at Pepe's or one of the others.Depending on the circumstances, it could be the best experience of the four, or it could be the worst. It is not likely to be in between.

Report back!

Not a big pizza fanatic. But I was out with friends at Krust in Middletown. The brussels pizza there was one of the best I've ever had. Garlic, mozzarella, parmesan, roasted brussel sprouts and onion. I would eat pizza more if they were all like that. Plus they have a big bourbon selection.

Can someone recommend a place in New Haven?

I too would skip Zuppardi's. If you do Pepes, Sally, and Modern that's the holy trinity so stop there. Although certainly not the best burger and definitely not pizza I would do Louis Lunch, home of the 1st hamburger (maybe). another option might be Tony and Lucille's for a calzone

However with The Game today you're probably not getting in anywhere.

Question about the "holy trinity" and takeout. I'll be dropping my wife off at the train station on Tuesday and wanted to pick up a road pizza for dinner. Which of the three is "best" for take out? I know no pizza travels overly well, but I'd like to get in and out as quick as possible.

Modern. Hands down. It will always be ready 20 minutes from when you call. Travels about as well as New Haven pizza can. Take out is in the side door next to the parking lot. If the lot is tight tell the guy you are there for take out and they'll direct you to a spot.

@intlzncster , I just read that The Game is starting at 2:30 today, which is later than usual. This could be good news for you, as I imagine that will reduce both the lunch crowd (because people will be tailgating long before then--that's the whole point of the event), and the early dinner crowd, because I can't imagine people getting out of the Yale Bowl area until 5:00 p.m. at the earliest.

I'm 100% Italian-American and a life-long New Haven area resident and 8893 blows me away. But it is not just pizza. I think he just constantly dines and samples beer. Independently wealthy man-about-town.
But late at night he's a crusader for justice.

This is a very important review as "travels well" and pizza very rarely go together. Hard to find a pie which leaves the restaurant which is even close in taste when you arrive home, especially when you live more than a few minutes from the location. One that travels decent from Meriden is Sal's on the east side of town. I live about 55-60 minutes from there and every couple weeks after visiting mom I will pick one up for my son as it's his favorite. Quick few minutes in the oven and it's still very good. I think the thinner the pie the more chance of retaining flavor.

8893 is right on here. Modern has take out down to a science. They'll tell you 20 minutes but it's usually ready in 15. The other 2 joints you'd be lucky to even get thru on the phone. None really give you the "New Haven" experience if you take out though.

Ha! Not entirely true...not independently wealthy....and it's not just food and beer--wine and booze, too! And music!

And most of my justice crusading is done by day...but much of it inspired late at night.

Growing up locally/regionally and working in New Haven for 20+ years has given me a lot of time and opportunity to experiment. Being of half Italian and half Irish descent has blessed and cursed me with a healthy appetite for food and drink. Having three daughters provides increasing motivation for the latter...

Thanks 8893, I'll follow your advice to a T. I'm going to The Game, but will only tailgate for a couple hours.
