First off, absolutely fantastic to hear that your daughter is following in your footsteps and pursuing her passion. Great to see more female brewers. I do agree with you that in many cases, a DDH or TDH won't "improve" an IPA. But, this beer is impressive because the dry hopping - using high quality and expressive hops (Krush, Nelson and Citra) - really brings out the hop character of each, particularly in aroma. That wouldn't be the case as much if they were simply added in the boil. It's an impressive, incredibly flavorful hazy for a fairly low-ABV IPA. Not just saying that because I'm an admitted Marowe white knight.
I have absolutely no doubt that its a really good IPA as Marlowe makes good ones.

But as a homebrewer and a proud dad of a craft brewer daughter, the whole "DDH" "Triple Dry Hopped" thing is mostly a marketing ploy. They could have single dry-hopped it and it would have basically come out the same.
My only complaint is that double and triple have no clear meaning. One brewer's double may be what another does regularly. Within a series I get it. DDH Fort Point, Congress St. and Melcher St. are all more hop forward than the non DDH counterparts.

Pretty much any NE IPA is dry hopped or it wouldn't be to style. I have little doubt this one from Marlowe is good because @karstenkibbe knows his stuff. I do need to try their beers but my visits to Westchester County are essentially non-existent. I don't even like going to Fairfield County.

Is it the traffic? Or Skip and Muffy types in Darien and New Canaan?

It's living in the Boston suburbs and hating NYC with ever fiber of my being. Westchester & Fairfield are fine but it's like I feel the looming ominous dark presence of the city.

Yes, I couldn’t be happier that’s she’s in the brewing industry. She’s just graduated from UConn, so she’s figuring things out, learning, planning…opening her own brewery is a dream that she’s planning carefully for. I’m happy to help her in my semi-retirement if/when that happens ;)

I wish it was easier to get Marlowe in NW Ct. Some places do carry it, but usually only 1-2 of their core styles. They brew very good beers!

There are some experiments that do show in some cases, with some hops, certain yeasts, etc. that taking the total amount of planned dry hops (added during the fermentation/end of fermentation) and fractionating it into 2 or 3 additions (“double” or “triple” dry hopping) can result in better sensory perceptions of the hop aroma/flavor in IPAs.

Then, there’s also the science/voodoo of “biotransformation”, where certain yeasts are able to chemically alter the aroma/flavor compounds in hops to even better smelling/tasting things while they are doing the fermentation. Which is why many breweries add dry hops a couple days into the fermentation, then add more at the end. Or add 2,3,4 additions throughout the fermentation.

One of these days, I’m going to make an IPA and split the fermentation into two batches…one with all of the dry hops added at once, one when maybe I’ll do a triple or quadruple dry hopping addition of the same amount.

Then, I’ll invite my IPA addicted buddies over and have them blind taste/aroma test them systematically to see if they can discern which one is quad-hopped. And which one tastes better.

It’ll be a great excuse to drink a bunch of great beers! :)

Plus, you would be crazy to pass Treehouse and Trillium, possibly more than 1 of each, to get anywhere. Any I looooooove Marlowe too.

So I was at the beer store and I bought two spectacular beers for later in the week.

And I figured, screw it, I will buy a couple of IPAs to see if people are still weird for obsessing over them.

And yes, you are all still weird. It was tolerable; of the 37 different flavor notes mentioned on the can, roughly one of them was actually present. Will not buy again.

This is what happens when a fish goes after a duck. ;):D

Beer week, day two.

Last IPA. I took my time, sniffed it, stared at it. Reflected upon it. Imagined the motivations of the people who made it. Asked God what he thought of it. Also, I drank it.

No, thank you. I am moving on.

@Fishy that Industrial Arts Wrench was considered a solid IPA about 6-7 years ago. That’s like 70 years in the evolution of the style. We need to get you some new school hazies.

The Duck Duck Juice is one of those. Let's face it, he just has bad taste in beer and prefers yellow piss water.

Agreed at least try the best before coming to a conclusion. Essentially that is:

TreeHouse
Fidens
Hill Farmstead

Day three. A return to normalcy. The guy who made this beer didn’t spend 23 hours on Warby Parker trying to pick out the perfect frames to match his socks. He doesn’t get in Discord arguments about anime. He wasn’t a barista at his former job and he didn’t hire some branding company to design can art that looks like a fever dream.

No, he just set out to make beer. And then he drove home on the Autobahn.

Mission accomplished.

Day four and I have rescued your summer. Not the normal 1664 which is plenty good enough, but the 1664 Blanc. She’s a wheat beer.

You don’t have to suffer through whatever hazy, fruity, hoppy, sour, bitter nightmare that you’ve been holding onto just long enough so your friends see you with it and think you’re the Anthony Bourdain of beer. Your friends are imbeciles and this is European so their hayseed asses will be impressed. Plus they can drink more than one without regretting their circumstances.

This is a spectacular summer beer. It’s going to be 98 degrees this weekend. Don’t be stupid. Drink this. I use German steins because I am pretentious in a way that you IPA weasels can only dream about. Also, the lid keeps gnats out of the beer. (Seriously.)

But also, here you go….

Halftime Beverage

If anyone wants to make a point about IPAs or whatever kind of beer, look through their inventory and give me two beers to buy. I’ll be over near their Poughkeepsie/Wappingers/Route 9 store at some point late tomorrow.

Not sours. Not doing it.

I would normally suggest anything from Marlowe. Their IPAs aren't over the top, and they mix in some seriously good ESBs, milds, etc. You can't go wrong with anything from them.

Love the Reverie Washington Sour.
It's a sour you can find at Big Y so it may be right up your alley.
Not overpowering, kinda beer like.
Great can ;)

I don't even know what a Big Y is.

A supermarket - I actually should have remembered that.

Done.

Glad you liked. I’m not a fan of Finback IPAs. They’ve regressed (like Other Half) in the last 5 years. A bit too much bitterness for my liking.
