Could be because many of them grow up hunting. West Point cadets come from all walks of life, rural, suburban and urban. While they will all get rifle training, not all will be commissioned in the infantry. We need Armor, Artillery, Engineer, Supply, Quartermaster, Signal et al officers.

The needs of college sports and national defense are different.

UConn's is 10 out of 28 foreign players for what that’s worth. And it doesn’t matter one whit to me where kids come from. Joe Morrone used to only recruit American kids back in the day - “America’s Team” - if I recall correctly. 9.9 scholarships that can be expanded to full 28 on roster under new rules. Some baseball programs are planning to get to max 35 (ASU) ASAP. Makes for interesting conversation on ROI versus being second tier in football/basketball or pushing for the Indiana dream. Soccer is a big draw and has history in Storrs regardless of how high level it is or isn’t today. That counts for something. Getting 3k to show up for anything non-rev is a big deal.

Averaged 2,800 in a stadium that can hold 5,100. UConn is in the top ten in men’s soccer attendance.

Makes sense. I was more or less joking but growing up hunting is probably the best training.
