B1G Ramblings

You should post this on the wrestling board. That's probably the only board that people would be interested in it.

Yeah but those wrestling programs aren't developing the top pros. And why is WVU always ranked ahead of Army in Rifle

Could be because many of them grow up hunting. West Point cadets come from all walks of life, rural, suburban and urban. While they will all get rifle training, not all will be commissioned in the infantry. We need Armor, Artillery, Engineer, Supply, Quartermaster, Signal et al officers.

The needs of college sports and national defense are different.

UConn's is 10 out of 28 foreign players for what that’s worth. And it doesn’t matter one whit to me where kids come from. Joe Morrone used to only recruit American kids back in the day - “America’s Team” - if I recall correctly. 9.9 scholarships that can be expanded to full 28 on roster under new rules. Some baseball programs are planning to get to max 35 (ASU) ASAP. Makes for interesting conversation on ROI versus being second tier in football/basketball or pushing for the Indiana dream. Soccer is a big draw and has history in Storrs regardless of how high level it is or isn’t today. That counts for something. Getting 3k to show up for anything non-rev is a big deal.
Averaged 2,800 in a stadium that can hold 5,100. UConn is in the top ten in men’s soccer attendance.

Did you ever see the episode of the Beverly Hillbillies where Drysdale took the Clampetts skeet shooting?

That explains it.

Makes sense. I was more or less joking but growing up hunting is probably the best training.

.-.

Lots of little tidbits of information in this article.

Maryland will finally start receiving full shares of B1G revenue in 2027. They joined with Rutgers in 2014 and became fully vested members in 2020. However, each school borrowed money against future earnings, and the schools have been paying that back since 2020.

Maryland football is near the bottom of the B1G in spending. In 2017, the average B1G team spent $33 million on football and Maryland spend a little more than half of that. In 2025, Maryland spent $35 million on football, a $17 million increase from 2017.

While revenue in football is not keeping pace with most of the B1G, Maryland women's basketball earned just under $1 million in ticket sales revenue for 2025, trailing only Iowa in the B1G (who made $2 million in ticket sales). Maryland men's basketball earned $16 million in total revenue and spent about $13 million.

There is a chart that shows football revenue vs. expenses of all B1G public schools (does not include Northwestern or USC), and Rutgers is the only school in the conference who has football expenses higher than football revenue. Revenue for Rutgers comes in dead last, but expenses for football are fourth, behind Ohio State, Penn State, and Washington.

Washington and Oregon finish in fifth and sixth for football revenue, despite only receiving half of the B1G media rights revenue. Michigan, Ohio State, Penn State, and Nebraska are 1-4.

Wait a minute.

Rutgers spends more on football than all B1G schools except Ohio St, Penn St and Washington? How is that possible?
Yeah something is not right. Rutgers football team looks like a junior varsity team relative to the top 1/2 of the Big 10. Is most of the money going to Tony Soprano enterprises.

You don't remember schiano',s helicopter

Someone needs to tell Rutgers that they could suck every bit as much at a lower pricetag.

Helicopters do not come cheap, my friend.

Also, I think there was a recent article about how Rutgers wastes money in its athletic department. (The 2018 credit card scandal below is what I was thinking of.)

On edit:
  • Financial Deficit: The department continues to struggle financially, with records showing a $70 million-plus deficit for the third time in five years as of 2024-25.
  • Former AD Under Investigation: Former Athletic Director Patrick Hobbs is under investigation by the New Jersey State Ethics Commission, with potential for heavy fines or being barred from state jobs, leading to his resignation in 2025.
  • Gambling Scandal: In 2025, federal officials uncovered a gambling ring linked to the mafia that involved former Rutgers wrestling program members.
  • 2018 Credit Card Scheme: Eight Rutgers football players were charged in a 2018 credit card fraud scheme that involved charging over $11,000 in fraudulent, stolen credit card information to their university "Express Accounts".
  • Coaching Misconduct: In 2025, the gymnastics head coach was fired following allegations of abusive coaching tactics, with reports indicating she was involved in a cheating scandal. She was also having an affair with the Athletic Director.

Yeah but you like to think our Army guys can shoot. That would seem to be a basic qualification, No? 😉

We live relatively close to West Point.

I'd say about five percent of the cadets look like they just stepped off the set of Terminator. The other 95% walked off the set of Revenge of the Nerds. You'll see them out and about and silently pray that they're part of the drone pilot crew or something.

I guess you don’t know how things really work in the military or an Academy.

You think they are shooting 40 rounds before breakfast every day?

The nerds are actually the more dangerous ones.
