B1G Ramblings

Outdoor track is the #1 HS sport by participation, with FB a close second, then Basketball. Obviously if the ladies played FB, it would be #1. Track is hanging tough(men’s) at the Intercollegiate level, but faces challenges all the time.
Flag football is the fastest growing sport among teenage girls.

So American kids are getting scholarships to play in college, but the percentage of American kids getting scholarships on college rosters isn't high enough. Either the percentage of the entire roster is too low, or the percentage of all the kids playing high school getting a scholarship is too low. I guess that is your point, I am just not sure. And we should also do away with baseball, softball, hockey, lacrosse, track & field, etc.

I don’t know about those other sports. But Men’s college soccer is pretty useless at this point. There is a reason why the USSF is trying to intervene to save it. To me, the juice isn’t worth the squeeze when we are 80% of the few scholarship opportunities to washouts from overseas.

Other than that your Dunning Kruger as usual is out of control and you simply don’t see how far off base you are.

one huge impact on soccer rosters is that most schools are now targeting international kids, not home-growns. It's long been that way in the men's game, but now that's creeping into the women's side too. And yes, very few kids get anywhere near a full ride in soccer.
And apparently that is bad which I guess is the point, I still don't know. Universities bring in tons of international students for all kinds of reasons and whether one thinks that is good or bad, why single out soccer instead of hockey or engineering. I know of a kid who got a full ride to play soccer, won a NC, and is now working at an equity firm, so it worked out great for him.

I'm not saying it's good or bad, just that this is (and has been) the landscape for that one sport (since it was being discussed in the thread.

So your point is that soccer is useless because you believe that 80% of soccer scholarships are going to foreign students who you consider washouts. At least we know what the heck you were trying to argue.

No, I'm not an expert in college athletics and the make-up of all the rosters on all various sports. I just wanted to know what your point was. I think we have narrowed it down.

that's exactly what has been going on for years - large portions of the rosters are taken by internationals who can't hack it in their own, more robust, soccer ecosystems.

To add to John’s point.

The best American home growns don’t choose college soccer because they know that developmentally it’s a dead end.

Flag football is extremely popular for both boys and girls. Could be the fastest growing but not nearly as many kids playing, yet.
It had explosive growth for girls in many regions of the U.S.

But that isn't really relevant. By far most student-athletes who receive a scholarship don't go pro. The best players in hockey and baseball don't go to college either. Or basketball for that matter.

UConn's is 10 out of 28 foreign players for what that’s worth. And it doesn’t matter one whit to me where kids come from. Joe Morrone used to only recruit American kids back in the day - “America’s Team” - if I recall correctly. 9.9 scholarships that can be expanded to full 28 on roster under new rules. Some baseball programs are planning to get to max 35 (ASU) ASAP. Makes for interesting conversation on ROI versus being second tier in football/basketball or pushing for the Indiana dream. Soccer is a big draw and has history in Storrs regardless of how high level it is or isn’t today. That counts for something. Getting 3k to show up for anything non-rev is a big deal.

Not even remotely the same thing. Imagine if each NFL and NBA team had a U-17 and a U-19 equivalent to develop their own players.

In soccer far more kids are signing pro contracts than in other sports in America. I just don’t think you fully grasp the scale of what has been created.

And yet you continue to ignore baseball and hockey.

Baseball and Hockey aren't like soccer for a bunch of reasons everyone has already mentioned. College Baseball and Hockey are actually solid developmental platforms for those sports.

Your criteria for a valid college sport seems to be whether it reaches a certain threshhold of sending players to the pros. I disagree with that criteria. And baseball and hockey are just like soccer for a bunch of reasons you seem to ignore.

Where did you hear this, just curious.
I coach girls' flag football (PowderPuff) at a public high school in southern CT. 7 on 7 (what has been on ESPN the past couple of years) is backed by the NFL and seems about to explode. Some schools in CT are running 7-on-7 as a club sport in the spring, and there has been some discussion about it becoming a varsity sport. In addition, some colleges now have varsity programs and are offering scholarships.

Grasping for straws Detective? Standard of play is important. At this point College Soccer is doesn't have it.

Big Ten Wrestling: Dominance on Display

The Big Ten's reign over college wrestling is undeniable. The conference:

  • Won the last 18 NCAA team titles
  • Boasts the top-ranked wrestler in nine of the ten weight classes
  • Claims five of the top seven spots in the national dual rankings
You should post this on the wrestling board. That's probably the only board that people would be interested in it.
