what are you talking about? Obviously I'm talking about top high school players who want to go to college, not freaking Messi and Ronaldo or even Pulisic. And it is 100% true. Maybe you haven't watched how good high school soccer has become and how these kids are going on to play in college.

Is that what college sports for most universities and individuals is about? Missed that memo. I guess the purpose is for adults to enjoy the entertainment of revenue sports, not opportunity for young athletes - many, btw who are real students.

Approximately 1/3 of college soccer players are NonUS players. Those foreign players are washed up players.

Hundreds of thousands of kids I might add. As many playing any sport. Limiting this cohort’s opportunity to keep playing is a strange take in this thread.

That is great and all I am saying is the student-athletes or the fans/boosters should pay for the non-revenue sports. If I am a college student I have seen my tuition increasing at a much higher rate than inflation and should not have to pay to support these non-revenue sports.

They are paying more for football than any other sport. And a lot of non-rev athletes are paying full freight. A full athletic program is a win-win. It may die off, and that would be a shame. You are right, alums need to step up, and they historically have - à la Tony Rizza.

At this point it’s so low quality it should either be a club sport or just dropped completely.

Silly. You think they are giving scholarships to American kids? How many full scholarships do you think are on a D1 team.

They are not playing high school soccer. They are playing in Academies or private club teams.

If they play HS it’s the soccer equivalent of a side gig.

I don’t understand that. Should athletes not have to pay to support the drama program? Students who never get sick not have to pay for the campus infirmary? If a school thinks it’s great to have non-revenue sports to attract and benefit some students, why is that a problem?

If the non-revenue athletes are on a full scholarship how are they supporting the drama program? By attending theatre productions? lol

They absolutely are giving scholarships to high school kids. Kids play high school, clubs, and prep schools. Not sure where you are getting your info but I see it every year. UConn has many international kids but they also have 4 kids from CT.

Exactly. If the SEC does not play a sport, it is irrelevant. If tiddlywinks had an NCAA Champinship and there was revenue to be had, they’d be cheating their asses off to get the top Tiddlywinkers to their program. They do not even play soccer.

Outdoor track is the #1 HS sport by participation, with FB a close second, then Basketball. Obviously if the ladies played FB, it would be #1. Track is hanging tough(men’s) at the Intercollegiate level, but faces challenges all the time.

Yes it appears you've misunderstood the point of D1 sports. It is about money and marketing for the university.

Not very many are getting scholarships.

I don’t think you understand how soccer works in this country. Nobody really good is playing a 3 month high school season.

There is a reason why college coaches have increasingly are signing old international pro washouts, and that’s because the best Americans are not playing college soccer.

That's not entirely true.

While I agree that the absolute top American talent are often skipping college to play abroad, the college ranks still make up a bunch of the MLS rosters (yeah, it's not La Liga, but it's still a pro league). There's still value in college soccer to develop pro players...
