The problems at Syracuse are not just related to coaching basketball. They need to revamp the whole program, everything from NIL to analytics. Here's a fun fact: How many times has Syracuse played in MSG in the past 8 years? Once! How does the AD at Syracuse let that happen? They should be playing a game at MSG every year.

If I were Murray or Young, I would target a school like VCU, George Mason, USF for my first head coaching job. I would think Providence is easier to turn around than Syracuse and the program is in decent shape, but Providence needs a better game coach.

Bigger name to fans who've been around a long time, but anyone under 30 probably has no idea they once were a power in the best basketball conference during the 80's to the breakup.

The question would be whether you think you can actually be successful at Syracuse. If you don't believe the pieces are in place to allow you to be successful then why take a high profile failure?

That's an interesting question. I'm not 100% convinced that Syracuse is a better job, notwithstanding its history under Beoheim. Rutgers is in the Big Ten, obviously a better conference than the ACC, particularly in conference payout. They've also recently shown decent NIL support. The right coach might be able to make something happen there, though, it's always foolish to underestimate Rutgers ability to find a way to fail.

Honestly, that's not the worst idea. I've heard floated. Sure, he didn't exactly light the world on fire at Arizona State, but Syracuse isn't all that great a job. It lets Hurley reestablish himself on the East Coast, where he has better connections, albeit in Canada, and let's Syracuse look like they're a desirable job that attracts high profile, or at least well-known, candidates.

I wouldn't mind a little Hurley vs. Hurley action in the preseason at MSG, either. That's a game that would definitely get eyeballs.

That's an interesting question. I'm not 100% convinced that Syracuse is a better job, notwithstanding its history under Beoheim. It’s a calculated risk, but I’d go Cuse for sure. There’s still a lot you can sell, repair some relationships, etc.

And, is there a better anticipated opening? KState, GTech, BCU, PC, ASU are all open now. I think Cuse is the best job of those. You could def argue KState because of conference and NIL, I guess. Kentucky would be a better job, but they’d never consider a first time coach.

I can't see Cuse hiring Murray. He would need to be a proven head coach first to get a big job like that. Cuse needs to hire someone that's already proven to be a winning head coach. GMac fits that description.

Murray and Young should be looking for high mid major jobs or lower level power school jobs. Syracuse is too big for a first head coaching job. Syracuse needs to get this right, they can't take that chance.

I 100% agree. Just was saying Luke and Kimani should take that if offered over purposely looking Mid-Major and bounce to somewhere more “stable,”

The board is all over the place. New AD is thought of as a football first guy. The board goes from Murray to Jay Wright and everyone in between. Whoever SU gets. He will need 8 to 12 new players. Ahh, the black hole of irrelevancy.

That and a world class facility are advantages but money trumps all. Head coach is a crazy job. Drove icons out early, Bennett, Wight, guys who could get any job they want, are great coaches, not old men and who want no part of the new system.

Bill Murray's net worth as of 2026 is $180 mil. Sounds like Luke and his future don't need to worry about money. What does Syracuse have to attract him. 12 Foot snow drifts? For someone like him even thinking about that job should be enough to send him into a major depression. Stay at Uconn and maybe eventually replace Dan Hurley. He should have at least 3-4 rings by that time. He's probably having the time of his life right now.

I'll catch some strays for this. I'd be happy to see Syracuse continue to fail, but I think you guys are underestimating the job. The ACC is a legit P5 conference that I'd slot ahead of the Big East simply because the conference pays out a lot more money. Syracuse is still considered a traditional basketball power that's fallen on some hard times and they still had a lot of fans at the Dome until they became a dumpster fire. This isn't a hard program to turn around. They may not compete for national championships annually, but there's no reason they can't be in the top quarter of the ACC regularly. Luke Murray would be crazy not to take that job if offered (I don't think it'll drop to him).
