Arkeel Newsome leads Ansonia to victory, picks up more hardware along the way. Newsome carried 40 times for 406 yards, 7 TDs in Ansonia's 66-28 victory over rival Naugatuck. Newsome is closing in on 10,000 career yards. He is the only player in CTHS history to rush for over 9,000 yards, score over 150 TDs, and record over 1,000 career points. Ansonia will host Coginchaug in the opening round of the Class S playoffs on Tuesday.

Will Arkeel get tested during the playoffs? I don't care who he's played against, he has numbers that you need special skills to obtain.

Are the semi's and finals at CCSU this year? I thought I read that. I'm only a town over so I really need to see him play.

Semis are at a neutral site. All Finals at CCSU. I listened to the game on the radio. A former CT HS coach, in the late 60's early 70's, was in the booth, who said he spent some time in TX, around TX HS football. He said Arkeel was as good as any back he's EVER seen and the best CT HS player EVER. He called him "Superman" the whole game. When asked how he thought Newsome would do at UConn, he said he didn't think he'd flourish in a spread system. But, he felt if used correctly in a pro-style offense, he could be an impact player. He was impressed with his power and ability to break tackles at his size, his patience, vision, and of course, his ability to jump in and out of cuts quickly. He was a Naugy guy, but raved about Newsome the entire game. The kid is special. What's more impressive, Ansonia became one-dimensional when their starting QB, JaiQuan McKnight (2015) hurt his ankle in the 1Q, Newsome carried every snap out of the Wildcat. Everybody knew he was going to run the ball, they still couldn't stop him. McKnight did return, in a limited capacity, but Newsome was unstoppable. He also held Naugy's best WR, Ryne Griessenhauer, all 6'5 of him, in check.

Here is a breakdown... http://www.gametimect.com/clinch-unofficial-ciac-state-football-playoff-pairings/

Quarterfinals are @ higher ranked team. Semi's are @ neutral field (announced 12/4) and I think only the finals are @ CCSU (12/13 and 12/14).

If Coginchaug was not playing Newsome's Ansonia in Quarters - I would definitely root for Cog based on helmet!!!

Surpassing 10,000 yard mark in the process.

Holy crap. Newsome. This is the first recruit the new coach has to come in and talk to. We need this kid.

Think how much it would be if he didn't have to sit as many games as he did due to "Cochran Rule"? Could possibly have been all-time National HS Rushing leader. Should end up Top 5.

All out of the wildcat - QB didn't play to rest ankle for next game. http://www.gametimect.com/newsome-rushes-492-yards-7-tds-ansonia-advances/

>>Ansonia got it done without its signal caller in impressive fashion from the onset. Paul Makinano had a sack as the Chargers stopped the Blue Devils (9-3) on their first possession. Ansonia followed the stop with a Newsome touchdown run from 72 yards out on the first play from scrimmage. Ansonia, as it would most of the day, went with the wildcat in absence of its quarterback. Newsome said the offense allows him to see the entire field from the backfield. <<

The Chargers (13-0), the second seed in the Class S tournament, will face third-seeded Rocky Hill in the semifinals Saturday, 2pm at Sheehan HS (Wallingford). The Terriers beat Prince Tech 51-8.

Newsome goes into that game with 264 carries for 3,350 yards, 59 total TDs, 413 yards and 3 TDs shy of the state records he set as a sophomore. He has 10,155 yards in all on 876 attempts and 178 career TDs.

The new coach needs to spend his first night sleeping in Newsome's front yard.

I don't know how Rocky Hill does it every year. Their linemen average about 195lbs. With that, I'm hoping Newsome breaks his own records on Saturday.

Game time is in conflict with the Huskies' game. Damn. Which game should I go to?

Look at the 2nd burst on the first touchdown run! Holy ~!

And whoever #28 is on Choppinlogs, he's just a wee bit slower than Arkeel. And he looks pretty damn quick.

Minus the boombox though

Agreed.

I'd rather our next HC show Arkeel this picture, as proof that it's possible to overcome all adversity and climb the highest mountains as a UCONN Football player. And in his own backyard no less.

Do us a solid Warde and find the next man who will get us back on track.

Noticed that but he was closing and ran out of field. Good speed.

That's the 1st score where 28 clipped Arkeel's heels, Jim. Look at the next one where he's in pursuit again, keeps up for 15-20yds and then gives up. Young man definitely has wheels but 0-2 in my book. Quick roster search says his name's Jordan Cowles, can't find much info on him. Medic?

Thanks, Medic. All I found were rosters too. Surprised that a Jr. with that type of speed doesn't have some sort of recruit profile, even if it were self-made. Hell, my niece is a 14 yo freshman and just made the varsity BB team at her HS in Jersey. Her coach makes it a priority to teach the kids and their parents how to utilize recruiting sites to market themselves for potential scholarship opportunities.

More proof that the Chompinlogs coach is a joke. More worried about trying to be a bad ass in the local paper than making sure his kids have a chance to reach out and grab opportunities they might have.

Newsome scored 5 TDs and Ansonia beat Rocky Hill, 49-27, to advance to their third straight state championship game. Ansonia will face Woodland Regional (who beat Bloomfield, 30-26) in an all-NVL Class S final. Ansonia beat Woodland a few weeks ago in the NVL Championship game, 48-7.

These are the last #'s I saw - could be a bit higher?

Newsome 28 carries, 246 yards, five TDs.#cthsfb

Following today's performance, Arkeel Newsome now has 300 carries for 3,619 yards, 64 total TDs on the season. The 64 TDs breaks his previous single-season state record (62) set in 2011. He now has 10,424 career yards on 912 attempts and 183 career TDs.

According to MaxPreps, Arkeel Newsome entered today's game as the second leading rusher in the nation behind, North Carolina commit, Elijah Hood. Hood carried 32 times for 147 yards in a semi-final loss. Hood finishes the season with 351 carries for 3,638 yards in 15 games. With one game remaining, Newsome would need just 20 yards to surpass Hood as the nation's leading rusher. Although California commit Tre Watson, who rushed for 289 yards today, is statistically still in the mix. Watson currently sits 136 yards behind Newsome following today's results. Watson's Centennial team is likely to be chosen to participate in next week's CIF State Regional Game, either in Open or Division I.

Newsome is also just 144 yards shy of his single-season state rushing record (3,763), and 381 yards shy of an almost unfathomable 4,000 yard rushing season.
