Another J Ross thread?...Yep

100% the polar opposite of what I just said. Let me try a really basic hypothetical question. Do you think A) Furphy should be guaranteed a starting spot next year, or B) do you not think he is able to develop at all?
Have we seen enough of Furphy in garbage time to know?

Easy answer - nobody is guaranteed a starting spot nor playing time.

It was a rhetorical question to point out the absurdity behind the assertion that if you don’t think we should go into next year with Stew as the guaranteed starter at the four, that means you don’t think he’s capable developing at all. I was pointing out that there are a bunch of bench players that I’m sure HW feels won’t start, but that obviously doesn’t mean they can’t develop

Swap "projected" starter for "guaranteed" starter, and I agree.

He’s filling the 3-and-D bench wing role that we really needed this year. Games like yesterday where we can get a lot of defensive pressure on their guards and generate live ball turnovers are where he really shines.
He and Malachi elevating their play allows for a lot of additional combos of players on the floor and tonight Hurley inserted him when he was getting bad vibes on D.

You’re comparing a 3* guy who hasn’t played at all this year to a top 50 guy who is entering his senior year that Hurley made come back twice.

But now you think we should get a transfer because you don’t believe he can develop. Like you do for every single player in this position.

You think Hurley asked him to come back both times just to recruit over him when it’s his turn?

You gotta chill with the personal attacks man. It’s a message board.
No. If you want to post stupid stuff I’m going to call you stupid. Don’t post stupid stuff and I won’t call you stupid.

It’s quite simple.

Hey, progress! We seemingly now both agree that development is not a) elite team starter or b) no development at all.

Candidly, someone waiting their turn is of limited concern to me in what is effectively a professional sport where guys are getting paid large sums of money and in a program where not being a championship contender is thought of as a failure. If you want to start, show that you can do the job in the minutes you get. I think Stew has show flashes dating back to his freshman year (and at that point I fully expected he’d be far ahead of where he is at now), but IMO he hasn’t shown nearly the consistency to be handed the starting job. Could he develop and take the job from whoever we bring in? Sure, I think he’s wildly talented, but that’s not a gamble I expect Hurley will take either.

I’m not totally sure why you get so defensive over someone having a difference of opinion about one of the couple of guys you really champion. It wasn’t that long ago that you were stumping for Solo as starting PG and making the same argument against bringing in a portal PG, including Demary. That clearly would have been a disaster. At a minimum I would think it would at least open your eyes to the idea that while we may disagree, it’s not an absurd position to take not to gamble a season on hope.

I can hardly get you guys to eat crow with Ross. I’m for sure not traveling down the Solo road with you all.

He developed almost exactly how people on this board wanted him to and…

Not sure what crow I’m eating on Ross. I’m on record numerous times that I didn’t have to squint hard to see him developing into a really valuable 3 and D wing, which is literally exactly what has happened this year. And as I’ve said many times, I would like nothing more than to eat crow next year if Ross develops to the level you believe he will. That would be incredible for this team.

I don’t want to get into a thing on Ball. The point was that it’s possible for a player to develop, which as you mention Ball clearly has in areas of his game this year like creating his own shot, while not getting to 100% of hypothetical potential. So that risk needs to be considered in recruiting. Take Demary off this team and start Solo as PG and we’re not even a tournament team, which I think we can both agree would not have been a positive outcome this year.

It's gonna be hard but also not that hard if that makes sense. If we needed to replicate Alex Karaban that would be hard, and maybe borderline impossible.

But we just need to bring in a super talented transfer and adjust the system to fit the guys we have, which is something I have full confidence in this staff doing
This. Didn't we have Lejuan Watts or somebody locked up until AK announced he was returning? That was late in the portal cycle too because we had to wait out AK's decision.

AK makes a lot. We will have a ton of money available for the position, I'm not worried about who we will be able to get. Honestly I'm kind of excited to see if we bring in a totally different type of player, or try our best to replicate AK.

In terms of impact, I wouldn't be shocked to see us bring in a Demary level player at the position.
