OT: American basketball player arrested in Indonesia

This sucks for him but laws are laws. You should always know what the local laws are wherever you travel/work. Just because something is legal in your home country does not mean you can do it anywhere you go.

I have a medical license but I have been to Asia, on entering Malaysia there are giant signs warning you about bringing drugs into the country. Indonesia is no different. Death penalty is an option in some of these countries.

This ain’t America, don’t F around.

In the early 1990s, there was that dumb American teenager who was spray painting all over the walls in Singapore city. Complete dumbarse got his ass whooped literally. They tied his hands around a tree and pulled his pants down and hit his arse with a stick. If you know how seriously Singapore city takes its cleanliness, you would realize how egregious his act was. A person can get fined in certain parts of the Singapore for chewing gum and the enforcement of the penalties, paying fines, was stricter in the 1990s than it is now.

His story was on Dateline and he said "they can't do that. In America, that is not allowed". Even at my young age at the time I said "you are not in America dumbarse".

Yikes the lack of common sense in people is truly amazing. Hopefully he gets out some day.

34 year old dummie, bought/ arranged to receive cannabis gummies parcel from Thailand, stated to police intent to share with teammates (distribution), properly butt plugged self

For pot gummies he could do life in prison. Not sure how this will play out, but this seems extreme and something I hope for his family turns more positive for him. Something interesting enough to keep an eye on.

Other countries have laws, too.

Maybe follow them.

I’ve never been there and even I know Asia has the toughest drug laws on the planet. He’s just stupid.

Can almost guarantee that the “laws are laws” folks here would be singing a completely different tune if one of their adult children got caught breaking a foreign law.

The mental gymnastics would be olympic gold level.

Reading up on the case led me down a rabbit hole of past instances and that country doesn't play around. Gotta imagine these players are advised of these laws before they sign, don't understand taking this kind of risk.

Michael Fay.

Besides Midnight Express, which Tom mentioned above, there were also a couple movies that came out in the late 1990s and showed what happens if you're caught in a 3rd world Asian country with drugs: Brokedown Place, with Clare Daines and Kate Beckinsale, and Return to Paradise, with Vince Vaughn and Joaquin Phoenix.

Now this dude probably hasn't seen those movies. But he's been LIVING there. But no matter how dumb he is, the law is ridiculous, and I feel terrible for him and his family.

So what action does Malaysia take against Thailand for knowingly shipping drugs?

Thailand could have warned the buyer. You know like 'all export packages to Malaysia may be subject to search'.

Just saying a young life and family will be permanently destroyed over a very stupid and ignorant action of a kid who fafo.

As a parent this was tough to see (potentially put to death) especially being gummies involved, which Americans practically dismiss here. I'm having a hard time comprehending the amount of trouble he's in.

You have to be olympic level stupid to not know Indonesia has incredibly strict drug laws. The dude is 34, there’s really no excuse.

He simply did it because he thought he would get away with it, the urge to pull it off weighed more on his mind then the repercussions of getting caught.
