I have a medical license but I have been to Asia, on entering Malaysia there are giant signs warning you about bringing drugs into the country. Indonesia is no different. Death penalty is an option in some of these countries.

In the early 1990s, there was that dumb American teenager who was spray painting all over the walls in Singapore city. Complete dumbarse got his ass whooped literally. They tied his hands around a tree and pulled his pants down and hit his arse with a stick. If you know how seriously Singapore city takes its cleanliness, you would realize how egregious his act was. A person can get fined in certain parts of the Singapore for chewing gum and the enforcement of the penalties, paying fines, was stricter in the 1990s than it is now.

His story was on Dateline and he said "they can't do that. In America, that is not allowed". Even at my young age at the time I said "you are not in America dumbarse".

Besides Midnight Express, which Tom mentioned above, there were also a couple movies that came out in the late 1990s and showed what happens if you're caught in a 3rd world Asian country with drugs: Brokedown Place, with Clare Daines and Kate Beckinsale, and Return to Paradise, with Vince Vaughn and Joaquin Phoenix.

Now this dude probably hasn't seen those movies. But he's been LIVING there. But no matter how dumb he is, the law is ridiculous, and I feel terrible for him and his family.
