Its a lot harder to do with college sports. They have a much smaller window. Its not like these tournaments can just be delayed a month or more.

I doubt they will even start the later games. Feel like this first game started after around the same time the other games started. I perceive an inordinate amount of live action has been placed on the st. john's creighton game.

Out of compassion for the other schools, they are giving them one last shot to win a title before UConn comes back and takes over.
It's a really kind gesture, if not misguided.
It can get much hysteric than not playing a basketball game.

The same way conferences have always been entitled to choose their automatic bids: awarding it to the regular season champion.
According to the Manual, 31.3.4.1(a), they can choose whether the auto qualifier comes from regular season competition or from a postseason tournament, and they can wait up until the deadline imposed by the NCAA for selection (ie Selection Sunday) to make that election.
