Watkins won all the NPOY awards voted on by sportswriters, media, business interests in Atlanta & LA, who were all enamored with scoring. Paige won the 2 awards voted on by basketball coaches, whose jobs are all about winning basketball games. Most importantly, Paige won the Wade Trophy, the oldest and most prestigious NPOY award for women’s basketball players, voted on by the WBCA.

Look, I agree that Blakes is a great scorer. But Sarah is a truly gifted generational basketball player that does more things on a basketball court than anyone I’ve ever seen, including Maya Moore. She is also the best player on the best team in college basketball. That will count for something with many voters.

Yes, they were enamored with scoring but even more so with JuJu herself who had been hyped relentlessly for two years. Unfortunately, when the media and/or the public vote, it is often simply a popularity contest.

The most basic point to make in comparison of Blakes to Sarah is this. For Blakes to effectively impact a game, she needs to take and make a lot of shots. In Vandy’s quarterfinal loss to Ole Miss, Blakes was 0-10 in the 1st half as Vandy dug a big hole for themselves. Blakes shot much better in the 2nd half as Vandy whittled the deficit down to 11 pts. But the damage was done.

On the other hand, Sarah does not need to take a lot of shots to impact a game. First off, she shoots a higher percentage than Blakes at all 3 levels. In the BE championship Sarah had 18 pts on 11 shots. But beyond scoring, Sarah impacts a basketball game in every way imaginable. She is a great passer, one of the best rebounders I have ever seen and while I suspect that Betts or Hidalgo will be named NDPOY, you can make a “strong” case that Sarah is the best defensive player in the country.

Forget Shooting % in these arguments.
Winning and only winning should be the discriminator. Sarah Strong only wins One National Title already and in position for another.
There are other great scorers out there, but no one wins like Sarah. PERIOD.
