We saw Phee shoot better than 50/40/90 in the WNBA season, and Paige frequently threatened 50/40/90 at UConn (FTs were the weak spot, relatively speaking). Which of the Huskies will challenge the 50/40/90 plateau this season?

--Azzi ALWAYS threatens that level. She needs to make a few more layups and hone her "middie" game.

--Ash has been over 90% on FTs as a frosh, over 40% from deep last year, and 48% both years. I think she can be close.

--Sarah shot well over 50% from the field and got her 3-point shooting up to 39%. Can she get to 90% on FTs?

--Any other candidates?

@MilfordHusky, my concern is that one day, possibly this year, a Husky like Sarah will achieve this stat, and you won't have a backup "go-to-stat" to reference each year. Just want to give you time to prepare and preserve your reaction score - just teasing my friend 😅

The tough one is the 90% for free throws. Paige would have had it easily last year but for the free throws. She was 112 for 126 or .8888. 113 would have gotten her to .8968 which arguably would have been enough, rounded up. 114 would have clearly done it.

You could tell when she missed some in the NCAAs that she was aware of where she stood. 7-7 versus South Carolina but 2-3 versus UCLA and 9-11 against USC.

For 2024-2025, Azzi was 47/44/92; Sarah was 59/39/74; and Shade 48/41/71.

Azzi clearly has the best chance because of her tremendous free throw shooting. Sarah has a long way to go to get to 90%.

Shade was almost automatic from the line in 2023-2024 but not nearly as good last season. Maybe she will rebound. She does not get to the line a lot so to get to 90% she really can't miss more than a few.

I think Ash had a bad game last year and missed 2 or 3 FTs.

I'm still trying to forgive you for claiming my local girl for your own this year. 😆

Azzi's potential is certainly 50/40/90.

It is quite possible that you'll have 3 players flirting with 50/40/90 and then Serah could get her FG% up in the 60s like a true high value post player. That is formidable....

Azzi stands at 51/55/100.

Blanca slipped to 56/58/83.

Allie is shooting 52/44/50.

Update after the USF game:

Azzi 49/51/100.

Sarah 56/32/90.

Blanca 57/63/71.

Allie 50/43/63.
It is a puzzle to me that Blanca and Allie aren’t shooting FTs better. Small sample size is probably most of it, but they didn’t struggle at the line in high school.

Hopefully Sarah gets her 3 point shot back sooner rather than later.
I also had the same thought about Allie's FT percentage...such a pure outside shot.

Blanca is 5 for 7 over just six games, and Allie is 5 for 8 in just eight games. That's hardly a struggle. 🙄

A bit OT, but I remembered that Gianna Kneepkens was close to achieving 50/40/90 last season, so I decided to check how she was faring this year now that she's at UCLA. Pretty well, as it turns out: 52.2% FG/ 45.8% 3P/ 90.0% FT so far this season. Not too shabby!

Almost a month into the season, and inclusive of yesterday's games, there were 819 D-1 players averaging double-digit points per game. Using double-digits as a cut-off, and also setting an arbitrary criterion of having to play in all of the games for one's team this season, there are just 12 players sitting in the 50-40-90 club.

Four of them are in mid-majors: Richmond's Maggie Doogan (23.4 ppg, 50.0/44.4/91.7); Wyoming's Malene Pederson (18.0 ppg, 52.7/53.6/100); Princeton's Skye Belker (15.3 ppg, 51.5/45.9/90.5); Oregon State's Tiara Bolden (15.3 ppg, 52.9/46.7/90.0)

The other eight are in P-4 conferences: Indiana's Shay Ciezki (24.3 ppg, 53.9/45.5/92.3); UCLA's Gabriela Jacquez (15.6 ppg, 57.1/48.6/95.0); Oklahoma State's Haleigh Timmer (14.8 ppg, 59.3/49.1/91.7); UCLA's Gianna Kneepkens (13.9 ppg, 52.2/45.8/90.0); South Carolina's Tessa Johnson (12.3 ppg, 50.7/47.2/100); Penn State's Moriah Murray (12.0 ppg, 52.6/48.9/100); Michigan's Te'Yala Delfosse (11.9 ppg, 66.0/61.5/92.9); Kansas' Elle Evans (11.0 ppg, 50.0/54.3/100).

Applying the NCAA/ESPN minimum criteria of five FGs, two 3ptFGs, and 2.5 FTs made per game, the 50/40/90 club shrinks to just two players: Richmond's Doogan and Indiana's Ciezki.

A tough club to get into, and even harder to maintain membership over the course of the year!

UConn update after DePaul game:

Azzi .496/.534/1.000 (she needs 1 bucket)

Sarah .582/.345/.852

Blanca .565/.625/.778

Team .504/.398/.754

That team number is impressive.

Can add in Ziebell (.526 / .448 / .625), but if she makes her next 2 FT's she'd be at 80%.

Azzi is still at 50/53/100.

Sarah is at 59/38/85.

Blanca is at 55/57/82.

Allie is at 51/43/63.

The team is at 51/40/74. The first 2 are really good; the FT shooting is mediocre.

Ziebell just needs to get fouled a few more times. ;)
