26-27 season

In the SC game, KK and Ash totaled 12 points and no threes. 20 points per game is leaving with Azzi. Paige ain't coming back. Olivia and Gandy are newbies, Jana is Jana. Where does Geno get his offense from for next year?
That is a fair question, no doubt the coaching staff is looking at the Portal and if there is a fit at the SG spot. However, your other post suggests that the staff should get a PG out of the Portal, yet there are four players on the roster that could potentially play PG, KK, Kayleigh, Kelis (seems to be a combo guard but I assume that plan is to develop her as a PG), and Jovana (freshman).

Doubt Geno brings KK and Ash off the bench in their final season. Geno really likes Ash on the floor and has reiterated this many times throughout her career, and Geno's probably not going to tinker with his starting PG if he doesn't have to.
Geno doesn't respects seniors more than underclassmen merely because of time served. He'll start whoever knows the system best, hits their spots on time, fights through screens, and takes open shots before passing. He's said this many times. He has even expressed a prejudice in favor of younger players merely because of program considerations. A senior may have to do more merely to hold on to a spot... and many have done exactly this.

That said, Geno has indeed also said repeatedly that he "really likes having Ash on the floor," that it's really hard to sit her down. That's got nothing to do with being a senior and everything to do with being committed to the work of the team.

As for KK, she ticks a lot of boxes for Geno. But the one she may be missing is taking open shots. He had patience with Nika about this in her first two seasons and she improved a lot in this area in the last two seasons. As for KK, in the beginning of this season, in the OOC, she was a lot more willing to take shots, even 3s. But that willingness faded later in the season, and especially in the tournament. It would help her if she could develop a dribble-stop jumper in the lane. This is an obvious difference between her and the top-level PGs like Hannah and Rori. On UConn, Kayleigh is really good at this, as is Ash, as were Paige and Azzi. Even Sarah has developed this shot. But it's a gap in KK's arsenal, as it was for Nika until the end.

And it's worth pointing out that Kelis also lacks the dribble-stop jumper, and has yet to commit herself to fighting through screens. What she mainly has is a dazzling quickstep drive to the rim and a killa crossover. Jovana may not have the killa crossover and the blazing first step, but she scores from all three levels and, like Kayleigh, is a very clever finisher at the rim with either hand.

As for seeking another perimeter shooter from the portal, it's unclear to me who would fit in. Madison St. Rose comes to mind for obvious reasons, but for equally obvious reasons she's probably headed to Northwestern. Are there other obvious candidates? I don't have any in mind. Kymora Johnson? Avery Mills?

This year UCONN's offense was dominated by Sarah and Azzi. During the 2026-27 season Sarah and Blanca will do much the same. Blanca does not need much help to get her shot ... any shot! KK and Ash had their roles redefined by Geno. Next season their roles will still be starters with more emphasis on scoring. They will deliver. Ash as a frosh and soph averaged 48% FG and shot 41% from the arc as a soph. She will average double figures. KK will start again and share time with K9. K9's backcourt partner will be Jovana Popovic. I have no idea about Kelis. She may go super nova for all know. I view Allie and Morgan as shooters leaning more towards Morgan. Not sure what went on relative to Gandy but she looked pretty good around the basket. I hope she is given an opportunity. I hope Jana gets better and does not play a distant 2nd fiddle to Olivia like this year relative to Serah. Admittedly I have a soft spot for Jana. Olivia appears to have offensive and defensive skills but frosh Bigs take time to develop. Ayanna and Ice made the smart move.

I’m always glad to hear another vote of confidence in KK and Ashlynn. Whenever the conversation turns to KK and Ash coming off the bench, I can’t help thinking back to the part of the Boneyard that, last summer, again in the fall, and even in December, seemed convinced that Kayleigh and Blanca would be starting by January.

For me, KK has already shown why she’s so valuable. She’s one of the best on-ball defensive guards in the country, and she finished the season second nationally in assist-to-turnover ratio — ahead of Rori, Raven, Kiki, everyone she’s compared against. Ash brings her own kind of value: she’s the definition of a hustle player, willing to do whatever the team needs, whenever it’s needed. Geno clearly trusts her, and that trust shows in the fact that she played the second-most minutes on the team after Azzi this past season. Not many players offer that combination of steadiness, versatility, and winning impact.

At a time when so many people are lamenting the portal and the lack of loyalty in the sport, UConn is lucky to have two players like this returning for their senior year. They’ve handled big roles, smaller roles, and everything in between, and they’ve done it with the kind of maturity every program says it wants.

I'm not a betting woman, but if I were, I would put money on KK and Ash being back in the starting lineup in 2026–27.

One model for what could develop with Gandy, Jana and Olivia in the front court might be the Stewie teams with Stef, Morgan, Kaleena and Kiah.

In 2012-13, Kiah averaged 10 mins, 3 pts and 3 rebounds, and shot free throws poorly (60%). That is exactly what Geno wanted from her. In that front court, she was an intimidator and a decent rebounder for her minutes. If she scored a little, that was gravy. And I think it was pretty difficult for guards to drive into the trio of Stewie, Stef and Kiah, and in the effort to avoid getting blocked by Kiah, they'd get stuffed by the other two.

The following season, Morgan didn't play more than a few games, Kiah's minutes went up and so did her rebounds and blocks, and the intimidation factor remained high. The next year, Stef had graduated but Morgan was back. Kiah's minutes, points and rebounds remained the same (more or less) but her blocks nearly doubled (3.8/g). The last of the Stewie seasons, Kiah had graduated and Stewie took up the slack in blocks, becoming the ultimate defensive intimidator we all remember so well. She was supported by Nathalie Butler, who put up freshman Kiah numbers, though the blocks were much lower. This had become a much quicker team.

What's the point of this history? My question is whether Gandy can play a role like Kiah's. The emphasis shouldn't be on points and she needn't play more than 10 minutes. But if she can be a low post intimidator, alternating with Jana in the role, and take the pressure off Sarah, Blanca and Olivia. Kiah might as well have been a volleyball player for all that Geno expected of her. Basic footwork, a few rebounds, and as Megan Cuomo says, "just be big in the low post." And like Kiah, Gandy runs well (played soccer in school) and really wants to contribute. If Jana and Gandy can contribute exactly that for 20 or so minutes, and if Olivia can supply the offensive punch from the low post, while Sarah and Blanca do all the scary, high-skill things that Stewie and Morgan did.

Picture a lineup like this (starters in bold):
  • Sarah Blanca Olivia (or Jana or Gandy) with KK (Kayleigh Kelis Jovana) and Ash (Allie or Morgan)
This would allow Geno to toggle between big and small lineups with ease.

The question is, can Gandy contribute in this limited way?

.-.
Starters - 2026-2027

Olivia Vukasa, Sarah Strong, Blanca Quionnes, Ashlynn Shade, KK Arnold. (18-23 minutes)

Starter minutes: Morgan Cheli, Jovana Popovic, Kaleigh Heckel, Allie Ziebell, Jana El-alfy (15-20 minutes)

Gandy Malou-Mamel, Kelis Fisher (5-10 minutes).

The waiver wire may play a big role in the equation, depending on who Geno can land. Geno can not downplay the waiver-wire. His competition will hit it hard. Keep in mind, on the men's side, the National Championship Team, Michigan...did not have a single starter who played for Michigan the year before. Every one of those starters played on a different team the previous season. Two of South Carolina's starters came via the waiver wire. Expect this trend to continue, to a great extent. I have heard that three top 20 players from Iowa State are going into the portal. If you can believe reports coming out of Knoxville, that 11 players are entering the portal. What this is turning into is basically college free-agency.

The big questions are:

1. Who does Geno get from the portal? (Imagine if Hildago goes in the portal...I think UConn would be high on her list);
2. Does Geno go after another big or does he go for a shooter?
3. Does Geno tap further into the international market?

One thing is for sure: while the team will look the same in many ways, it will be different in demeanor and urgency. and style of play. Having a quality big like the "Big O" will free up Sarah and Blanca to wreak havoc from the wings. Having some scoring power from the guard positions: Cheli, Shade, Ziebell, and Popovic. The thought of a player like Hildago beging picked up from the waiver wire is enthralling to say the least.
Wait whattttt? Next season we'll have...

Jovana
Kelis
KK
Kayleigh
Ash

So five guards (four PG) ~5'9" out of a roster of 12, nearly half the roster. And you think the idea of Hidalgo who's an even shorter PG option and who plays 1 v 5 basketball quite often; coming to UConn from our rival, with our style of play.... is enthralling????

The Huskies lost two players to the transfer portal this week. Redshirt sophomore Ayanna Patterson entered on Monday and redshirt junior Ice Brady entered on Wednesday. Both were in Storrs for four years, but only played two healthy seasons due to injuries. UConn isn't expected to lose anymore players to the portal.

Wow. Wasn't expecting Ice's portal announcement. I am wishing her and Ayanna all the best on the next chapter in their lives.

PG
SR 5’9 Arnold

FR 5’9” Popovic
JR 5’9” Heckel
SO 5’9” Fisher

G
SR 5’10” Shade

JR 5’11” Ziebell

W/F
RS SO 6’2” Cheli
SO 6’2” Quinonez
JR 6’2” Strong

P

FR 6’4” Vukosa
SO 6’5” Malou-Mamel
JR 6’5” El Alfy

So I bolded players I think can meaningfully and consistently contribute against top teams, based on past performances. Not much to say, these are the players I think are the core for next season.

I don't see Gandy or Allie as being reliable against top tier teams, controversial take with Allie. I just don't see it.

The freshman we really won't known their probable impact until after they play their first few games, or if we hear Geno raving about them over the summer/early fall. Though I do think based on the film, both can be early role players and may even carve out substantial roles on the team as the season progresses.

Biggest question marks for me are Morgan and Kelis. If Morgan is healthy over the summer, can get back up to speed over the summer, and continue to develop now having been in the program for a couple years. Could be a key piece. Kelis has shown flashes of great potential. If a sophomore leap occurs, could be another big piece.

All that said I think given the three roster spots now open, imo we could really use an athletic/long 3 and D guard/wing in that 6-6'1" range. And a fleet footed, athletic forward/post who can provide solid rim protection, rebounding, defensive vers, and some basic scoring. We have plenty of PG, no more PG please!!! We need more shooting, defense/length, rim pressure, and overall athleticism/muscle. But honestly, this is still a pretty stacked team.

What! You don't! She is unstoppable. She will not win a title at ND. She averaged 5.6 assists, 5.6 steals, 6.9 rebounds from the point guard position, and 25.3 points per game. Was the only player this century to achieve those averages in a single season. She was a standout playmaker and defender. She was the Nancy Lieberman Point Guard of the year. And you don't find her coming to UConn as being enthralling...you, my friend, have set the bar way too high. Any of Hildago's shortcomings could easily be corrected by her commitment to winning a championship and the UConn coaches showing her how.

Haha well I think she’s an incredible player, just saying I don’t see the fit at all. There’s players who have incredible, even generational talent but who probably wouldn’t have been good fits at UConn. Caitlin Clark, Juju Watkins, and Hanna Hidalgo come to mind

Not to mention we have 4 PG type players next season, 5 if you include Sarah who can be point forward whenever she wants, all of whom look able to compete for playing time. So it’s also at the bottom of the priority list for what we need rn imo. I also doubt if she did leave ND, she would ever come to it’s biggest rival…so it’s all of that context that makes me say yeah not enthralled

Wait! Why isn't anyone taking my suggestion of Zhang Ziyu seriously. Do we seriously not want a 7'5" post player? Talk about unstoppable, enthralling, amazing.

C'mon Bone Dog...Of course, I would be ecstatic if we could land a 6'7" post...no telling what my emotional state would be if we landed a 7'5" recruit.

From what I have been reading about Jovana Popovich, she seems like the real deal. Averages 26 ppg, 7 rpg, Some people have compared her to Kelsey Plum.

For all we know, she might be taking Azzis spot from day 1.

Next year's team is littered with unknowns. But we do know this:
1. Sarah will be great again, and the centerpiece of the team.
2. We have strong, experienced guard options with KK, Heckel, Shade and Zeibel. But none of these are Paige or AZZI level
players ( who is?).
3. There is a potential break out star in Blanca ( but her required step up in maturity, consistency and reliability is not guaranteed ). Her positive development is a game changer for UCONN.
4. Our post position remains a weakness. Jana can productively eat up minutes and rebound decently, but she is not yet an offensive threat. Williams was signed via the portal to strengthen that area. She was good but not what I hoped. The Gandy person seems a project and a dream. The truth is we know nothing about her game or potential. Nothing. For Gandy to become a dominating force next season, while possible, would seem a miracle. A big ask, as they say.
5. The major plus from next year's recruiting class is The Big O. A heralded player in the post position. If she is a star from day one, UCONN's future is bright. But who really knows? The guard from Serbia is a mystery. A player with a fine resume but unknown to US fans. Nika Muhl turned out great and Blanca is on the cusp of great. So there is reason for optimism. But we just don't know what we have here.
6. The remaining eligible players all come with huge uncertainties; Cheli hasn't played in almost two years due to a chronic foot
problem ( now corrected by surgery ). So seeing her return will give us a new look at her skill set. ICE may or may not be ready by December; Fisher looks talented but I only saw her effective on the drive to the hoop ( I don't recall her ever hitting an outside shot...albeit she had few opportunities to do so ). I love Paterson as a UCONN loyal and great teammate, but I still have not seen the skill set that had her rated so highly in HS. She is bigger and stronger than most, and can out jump most humans. But is that enough to be a reliable contributor?
7. I think UCONN will sign a portal player if the right individual ( e g a Kaleigh Heckel type ) emerges. Most likely a forward who is quick and can shoot.
8. Losing AZZI FUDD is a big deal. She did not have a great final game, but she was a super star up to that point. When we lost Paige to the pros, we had AZZI ( and Sarah ) to support the loss. I believe the new era ( no Paige or AZZI ) is going to be a real challenge.
UCONN will make the final four - the question is always whether the five stars will deliver to push them through to a title. Unfortunately that was not the case this year. Let’s see what Sarah and O can put together the next couple of years.

Lots to figure out.

First is who is back and who is healthy and ready.

Kk - shade - Blanca - Ss likely starters.

Probably Jana or Olivia as 5th. But maybe AllieZ or Heckel.

That’s not the most intimidating lineup. I would sluff off KK Shade Jana.

Not sure what to expect of any of the rest — cheli ice Ayanna Gandy Kelis Jovana.

SS needs to come back pissed. As I said during gsme chat, hopefully this is like 2001.
Would never sluff off Shade. This is the player that scored 20 points in the first Q of a game last year. Re: Allie, not a great one on one player but if Geno can design some extra pick plays, she has the shooting skills to be a 15 ppg guard. Deadly 3 point shooter.

The fact remains that we need power and size in the front court and that is the likely pick up or two in the portal. While we have that in the starting forward positions in Blanca and Sarah, and hopefully Morgan ( although it may be unrealistic to expect too much after a long layoff), we could use help there as backup and certainly in the post. If there are no UCONN type players available for those positions, a small forward scorer would be a good addition.

Arnold,Heckel,Fisher
Shade,Popovich
Blanca,Alli
Strong,Cheli
El Alfy, Vukosa, Gandy

I would be more than willing to trust that team to go far. Until she was injured, Morgan was a capable backup for Sarah.
Please explain, " ....Morgan was a capable back-up for Sarah." Sarah Strong? The player of the year? I must have missed a few beats in the few times I was able to see Madison on the court. You believe she is that good? I hope you are right, but I need more detail.

No one is that good. But Sarah needs a backup. Which means Morgan might be good enough. Why assume she won’t be?

Look at the roster real close, do we really need another player? We are ok at guard, and the front line is in good shape with Sarah, Blanca, Jana, and Olivia. Besides, having 13 players are more manageable than 15. We still have the talent, just have to get everyone healthy. I am looking forward to having Morgan on the floor. She is good, but because of injuries, we tend to forget how good. Staying pat may be the best move.

I don't think that we need another player but if another transfer like Azura, Dorka or Lou Lopez Sénéchal joined the team...gravy!

In part, I think the expressed desire to have a completely full roster, comes from the still fresh memory of having to go through the bulk of multiple seasons with barely any viable subs and the inability, therefore, to play defense in the way that Geno prefers.

I don’t really like a guard starting lineup of KK, Shade, and Allie. That probably seems the most likely to me. But it is pretty short. And maybe I am just bored in the offseason, but I want to try something different.

I would put Allie in there; probably by default. Because we are going to desperately need the 3 point shooting. KK and Heckel can battle for the point guard spot at training camp. And I have Shade as like a 6 man. So, I get another starting guard via the portal. Or maybe I can put Cheli there? Or I go with a bigger lineup and use Blanca as a 3.

Do we need "another starting guard via the portal" when we have Jovana Popova
coming in? I believe that she has the skill set to be either a PG (of course)
or used as a Shooting Guard (if necessary). She is fast (and quick) with "handles".
One FIBA article reported (I think) that she led her team (or league?)
in scoring. She may not be a significant scorer on UCONN as a Freshman,
but she should be a "threat" to score (which, in my opinion, is significant).

You have several months to mull various scenarios over. Pace yourself. 😉😁

Jovana also had an impressive Nike in Portland this past weekend. She will bring some serious talents in this fall.

I don’t think Hunter from TCU would have been a bad one for UConn. She is off to UCLA though.

Agree!! I'd like to see our team use our new/young players and put trust in them early and to develop quickly with meaningful playing time. Jovana is touted but doesn't have the bona fides like Sarah, Azzi, Paige, JuJu etc. However, seeing Vandy/Shea develop Mikayla (#8) and Aubrey (top 150) as freshmen makes me wonder if we should rely on our own top recruits to show us their full capabilities instead of going to the portal. Since neither Mikayla nor Aubrey had an older teammate that could overshadow them - UConn's roster can be intimidating to new players for sure, like Allie Ziebell's deferring comment - perhaps then Jovana, Olivia, Kelis, Allie, Gandy, Jana and Morgan will be more than capable of major contributions that the team needs to reach next year's Final Four.

What you are describing is an ideal world, one we remember fondly, when teams would recruit and cutiivate high schoolers, preppies and an occasional JC transfer. in other words, NCAA Womens BB a few years back, before NIL, Portal and Conference realignments. But, and that's a big but, now the pressure on a winning program such as the excellence of UConn, demands a NC, or at least a FF appearance. There is no time now to develop talent, it must be purchased. It's a shame, makes a mockery of the selection process, and lessens the chance we will see any more of the old fashioned student athlete who spends 4 full years at one institution. I think we can lame the blame for this solely at the feet of the NCAA as they have capitulated their resolve to the almighty dollar and thus the integrity of the game as we old folks remember it.
