26-27 season

I cherish a fond hope that Ayanna might finally be able to realize some of the great potential she showed in high school. She was raw and lacked confidence as a freshman, but her athleticism was formidable and may still be. Low post moves were not her strength, but she could rebound and intimidate, and had a nice touch on her jump shot from the elbow in. She also has the foot speed to run in transition. Could next season count as her ‘sophomore leap’ year?

I put this in another thread but I’ll repost it here along with my statement that comments speculating, wondering, theorizing or any kind of mention of UConn transfers is not allowed. This includes comments like “If she comes back…” or “If she uses all of her eligibility “ Unless there is an announcement by a player or the school, assume everyone is returning

That answers my question. Brady and Patterson seem to have two more years of eligibility. This would solve a lot of our problems if both are healthy and can reach their potential. Jana too.

But "if" is the question.

Now that the season is over earlier than anticipated after a bad loss to South Carolina our thoughts can turn to the 2026-27 team. So far as we know, the following players will be back next season - KK Arnold, Ice Brady, Morgan Chelli, Jana El-Afry, Kelis Fisher, Kayleigh Heckel, Gandy Malou-Mamel, Ayanna Patterson, Blanca Quinonez, Ashlynn Shade, Sarah Strong, and Allie Ziebel. Assuming that Brady can and will return, the roster has twelve players. Two new players are coming in - guard Jovana Popovic and center Olivia Vukosa - making a total of 14. If Geno intends to use the portal, only one spot is available, assuming that no one enters the portal.

The team will have three bigs, a plethora of guards, two outstanding forwards, and several who can fill the small forward/big guard mantle, but the stinker loss to South Carolina reveals a couple of problems that may or may not be taken care of internally. Rebounding and scoring from the center position has been lacking all season. Vukosa seems like the obvious fix, but Geno may need more. A good passer at the high post would help a great deal. Does Vukosa fill that bill? KK Arnold is an excellent defensive player but her lack of offense proved to be a problem all season and particularly against the Gamecocks. She has one offensive move, the drive to the basket, but she often misses the shot. Lack of finishing around the basket was a difficulty for the team all season and Heckel’s missed layup with just over a minute to play epitomized the problem.

The way too early starting lineup will likely consist of El-Alfy, Strong, Quinonez, Arnold, and Shade with Vukosa and Heckel being the first two off the bench, followed by Popovich, Chelli, Ziebel, and perhaps Fisher. It looks on paper like a decent team, but who will be the third scorer after Strong and Quinonez, someone who can consistently give the Huskies 10-15 points per game.
Next year's team is littered with unknowns. But we do know this:
1. Sarah will be great again, and the centerpiece of the team.
2. We have strong, experienced guard options with KK, Heckel, Shade and Zeibel. But none of these are Paige or AZZI level
players ( who is?).
3. There is a potential break out star in Blanca ( but her required step up in maturity, consistency and reliability is not guaranteed ). Her positive development is a game changer for UCONN.
4. Our post position remains a weakness. Jana can productively eat up minutes and rebound decently, but she is not yet an offensive threat. Williams was signed via the portal to strengthen that area. She was good but not what I hoped. The Gandy person seems a project and a dream. The truth is we know nothing about her game or potential. Nothing. For Gandy to become a dominating force next season, while possible, would seem a miracle. A big ask, as they say.
5. The major plus from next year's recruiting class is The Big O. A heralded player in the post position. If she is a star from day one, UCONN's future is bright. But who really knows? The guard from Serbia is a mystery. A player with a fine resume but unknown to US fans. Nika Muhl turned out great and Blanca is on the cusp of great. So there is reason for optimism. But we just don't know what we have here.
6. The remaining eligible players all come with huge uncertainties; Cheli hasn't played in almost two years due to a chronic foot
problem ( now corrected by surgery ). So seeing her return will give us a new look at her skill set. ICE may or may not be ready by December; Fisher looks talented but I only saw her effective on the drive to the hoop ( I don't recall her ever hitting an outside shot...albeit she had few opportunities to do so ). I love Paterson as a UCONN loyal and great teammate, but I still have not seen the skill set that had her rated so highly in HS. She is bigger and stronger than most, and can out jump most humans. But is that enough to be a reliable contributor?
7. I think UCONN will sign a portal player if the right individual ( e g a Kaleigh Heckel type ) emerges. Most likely a forward who is quick and can shoot.
8. Losing AZZI FUDD is a big deal. She did not have a great final game, but she was a super star up to that point. When we lost Paige to the pros, we had AZZI ( and Sarah ) to support the loss. I believe the new era ( no Paige or AZZI ) is going to be a real challenge.

That is a big ASK. We all hope for that emergence. She thrived in HS by being stronger than anyone, of good size, and with the jumping ability of a gazelle. But she has not shown elite skills yet on the court. And there are now enough big, strong, athletic players in division one that her physicality does not give her superiority.

That is a ton of hopium. Not sure what we've seen to date to make us think she'll make a big skill leap this summer. All I can ask of her is to work hard and be the best teammate she can be.

Azzi did not have a good final THREE games in the tournament

  • Blanca has demonstrated enough to make me think she will make the leap.
  • So, so many question marks surrounding what we'll get out of Morgan, Ice, Olivia, Jovana. But due to returning from injury and or youth, they will likely be role players, I hope I'm wrong.
  • We need a transfer that can make serious impact or we will have problems scoring next year. Our track record with transfers is 50/50 at best.

Reading this it's hard to believe UConn won the national championship last year with Jana starting and maybe if she had seen more minutes this year she would have improved. Anyone who thinks KK isn't starting next year is dreaming.

i think s box score 2025 women’s basketball national championship game

she played 12 minutes in the national championship game
And was not really much of a factor as uconn went to a small lineup
She has had lots of opportunities over the last two years and has not really been able to impact the game positively on a consistent basis to get more minutes

Lots of discussion and opinions in the string about who's playing 3/4/5, who's starting, which player is better than the other, who's coming off the bench, we need a big who can rebound, portal targets, etc.....

Imagine this scenario:
UConn down by 10 with 4:37 remaining. The team has been struggling to score and getting stops.
Sarah playing with 4 fouls.
Huskies 4 for 19 from beyond the arc.
UConn doesn't have possession arrow and only 1 TO left

In other words, not looking good.

Here's my question. Who on next year's roster is going to be the player who takes over game both offensively and defensively to bring the team back and win the game? Prior to this year that player was Paige. IMO there wasn't such a player on this year's team. So who is it next year? Blanca? K9? Sarah?

Please answer in the context of the scenario outlined above.

We have scorers ( I know they didnt show up tonight) what we need are rebounders. Bigs who can hang onto the ball. Bigs who can grab a rebound and put it back up.
I am writing this response without having read the whole thread so apologies if this repeats anyone else's observations/opinions.

But before this, I want to mention that despite the obvious disappointment in the outcome against South Carolina, I remind myself that this was overall a really great season.

My biggest question mark about the season was Serah's play which I found disappointing more often than not. Given her stats for her three years at Wisconsin, where she played against much more physical and talented teams, I thought she would be able to own the Big East. Didn't happen. (And admittedly my hopes might have been biased by being a Wisconsinite!)

I know there are some factors for this. One, at Wisconsin she was the only real talent on the team so they needed to run much more of the offense through her. There was no need for that with the Huskies with all the other shooters out there. Second, it usually takes long time to adjust to a new team and I think this particularly true at UConn with the type of offense that Geno runs.

That being said, I wonder if it would have been better had the coaching staff made a concerted effort early in the season to force feed the offense more pointedly through Serah. I'm not saying this would have made a difference at the end but I do wonder.

Agree KK will probably start next year. But K9 is the better all-around player & floor manager. But we need more toughness if we are to compete from this point on because it seems that the game is becoming more physical than ever and referees are letting it happen.

I hope Olivia gets the starting role and a lot of minutes from day one. She’s the player with the most potential coming in, and it would be nice to spend the full year building her up to be ready for March.

Heckel, Shade, Blanca, Strong, Olivia

I think Heckels offseason is one of the most important. Need her to become consistent from the outside and midrange. I don’t see KK making that next step.

Will be weird to close the Paige/Azzi chapter.
But during their time at UConn they both missed whole seasons and the drought continued but now it’s over and # 12 is safely in the record books ( too bad # 13 just managed to escape from our clutches because I have no doubt that we would’ve handled UCLA ). On to the next winning streak and more championships.👍

How is it that every incoming big recruit on other teams seems bound to be great, but somehow “we don’t know what Olivia” will turn out to be? I’m not saying Olivia is a sure thing. Far from it. But perhaps we should extend the same skepticism about other teams’ recuits too.

I'm skeptical by trade and disposition, including skepticism about lots of basketball players, opinions and assertions. However, I'm not very skeptical about Olivia Vukosa.

Having seen her in many high school games, including three times in person, I have no problem believing she'll be most talented and skilled 6-4ish player on UConn since Dolson and Stewart.

I'm positive she she has more inherent talent as a shooter, as a rebounder, as a rim runner, as a ball handler, and as a "good hands" player than Serah Williams or Jana El Alfy. In her senior season at Christ the King, Vukosa averaged 17.8 points, 18.1 rebounds, 5.5 assists and 4.4 blocked shots per game.

Will she show those talents right away at UConn? Nothing can be certain about mental stuff, but it has always appeared to me that the "Big O" also reflects her big Optimism and big Offensive assertiveness— as long as Geno runs actions for her and plays guards who can effectively and reliably pass her the ball.

Geno didn't recruit the high school Gatorade NPOY "as long and as hard as we've ever recruited anyone" to sit her on the bench.

If you really think about it, Geno did recruit our front court. Patterson, Ice and Jana were supposed to be our big, tall physical front court.

But they have all either been hurt (in some cases out for years) or have not lived up to expectations or the hype coming out of high school. I have seriously forgotten that Patterson and Ice were still on the team.

I have no idea how many redshirt years they are allowed or have accumulated. If we had them healthy we might not be in the situation we are in. Brady could have been a big help to us.

I also wish that Jana would just concentrate on being a rebounding and blocking machine. With her height and length she should be dominating under the boards. Like Kia Stokes did for us. We dont need Jana to score. But we need her size.

Sarah, Blanca, Kaylie, Ash (if she plays like she did v SC), Morgan (if she’s back to her pre-injury form)…

You are 100% wrong in your alleged analysis of what supposedly was wrong with our team this year (or last night if that’s what you meant) and to blame KK’s play for the loss last night. All year she was and is a great game manager and floor general, my God, she just shattered Paige’s record for assist to turnover ratio and lead the nation and shot 57% from the field. She was definitely NOT the problem last night, I have no idea what game you were watching to come up with such inane drivel. She did her job and played very well. I’m not even going to waste any more time setting forth all the stats that would demonstrate the fallacy of your unwarranted attack on KK but will address this ridiculous statement by you. “ For the 2026-2027 team to win” Kayleigh must start and KK has to come off the bench- WHAT???? Any Coach, team, player or fan in the country would consider 38-1 and a FF appearance as an unprecedented great winning season, not to mention 54 straight wins. She is truly the heart and soul of this team on court and off and to state that she should be benched her senior year after the season she and the team just had ( and 2 fantastic years prior btw) is patently absurd.
I would not equate coming off the bench with “being benched” on this team. Clearly Blanca and K9, as the season progressed, played significant time and, but for Azzi and Sarah, played abiut as much as the other starters. I consider being part of Geno’s 7-8 man rotation proves that you could just as easily be starting as coming off the bench. I personally think that if Kayleigh could improver her outside shooting, I’d love to see her play more. With her defense and point guard leadership, UConn loses nothing when she is out there. As for Blanca, does anyone seriously think she wasn’t good enough to be a starter this year?

The depth chart just got a lot more favorable for Gandy. Could we see her in the rotation? She’s big, not just tall, has long arms and runs the floor really well. Here’s to hoping she gets some minutes starting in the fall.

At the 5: Jana Gandy Olivia
At the 4: Sarah Blanca Olivia
At the 3: Sarah Blanca Morgan Allie
At the 2: Ash Allie Morgan Jovana Kelis Kayleigh
At the 1: KK Kayleigh Kelis Jovana

Still a lot of question marks in this roster once you get past Sarah Blanca Jana Ash Kayleigh and KK.

I think the biggest question mark is Morgan. She had foot surgery around February 2025 and then missed the entire 2025-26 season. But towards the end of this season it appeared that she was participating in some pregame activities. I'm hopeful that she returns at 100% this summer and becomes another scoring threat next season.
As far as Gandy goes, from what I saw in her very, very limited time on the court, she is going to have to improve drastically before she sees any significant game time.

Starters - 2026-2027

Olivia Vukasa, Sarah Strong, Blanca Quionnes, Ashlynn Shade, KK Arnold. (18-23 minutes)

Starter minutes: Morgan Cheli, Jovana Popovic, Kaleigh Heckel, Allie Ziebell, Jana El-alfy (15-20 minutes)

Gandy Malou-Mamel, Kelis Fisher (5-10 minutes).

The waiver wire may play a big role in the equation, depending on who Geno can land. Geno can not downplay the waiver-wire. His competition will hit it hard. Keep in mind, on the men's side, the National Championship Team, Michigan...did not have a single starter who played for Michigan the year before. Every one of those starters played on a different team the previous season. Two of South Carolina's starters came via the waiver wire. Expect this trend to continue, to a great extent. I have heard that three top 20 players from Iowa State are going into the portal. If you can believe reports coming out of Knoxville, that 11 players are entering the portal. What this is turning into is basically college free-agency.

The big questions are:

1. Who does Geno get from the portal? (Imagine if Hildago goes in the portal...I think UConn would be high on her list);
2. Does Geno go after another big or does he go for a shooter?
3. Does Geno tap further into the international market?

One thing is for sure: while the team will look the same in many ways, it will be different in demeanor and urgency. and style of play. Having a quality big like the "Big O" will free up Sarah and Blanca to wreak havoc from the wings. Having some scoring power from the guard positions: Cheli, Shade, Ziebell, and Popovic. The thought of a player like Hildago beging picked up from the waiver wire is enthralling to say the least.

Three (Jana,Ash and KK) out of the last six you mentioned are seasoned vets where their capabilities are well known. Sarah, Blanca and K9 have more upside as they continue to adapt to the system. All the rest, as you mentioned, are question marks, either for lack of playing time or coming off injuries.

Agree with everything. Just need KK to practice shooting, shooting, shooting, during the off season. What a powerhouse it would be if she could score 10 points or more each game next year.

I think KK and Ash are 'they are who we thought they were' (Dennis Green) and are best utilized like in 2025 off the bench. Of course, then we had Paige and Kaitlyn. Now we have Sarah and Blanca and K9, neither of the latter two a true PG, and only a year into the system, so here is a place for a player off the portal, much like Chen did in 2025. Now with 3 spots available, we can look for a BIG and a PG with talent and experience that could possibly start allowing Geno to return to and win the 13th NC.

In answer to
  1. I don't see Hannah leaving ND, but if she does it will be to another catholic school. You only have to listen to her in one press conference to realize the depth of her religious sentiments. Also, unlike other players, she doesn't need to burnish her credentials for the draft. GMs in the W already know exactly what she brings.
  2. This one is a lot harder to answer. I can see a value in getting either a big or a little. But the big doesn't necessarily have to be a 6'5" post. It could be someone like Aliyah Moore, who can play very big but with mobility. As for little shooters, I don't think the 5'9" SGs currently available really fill a need. Someone like Kymora Johnson, for example, is too ball dominant to fit in, I think, and though her defensive stats are respectable, at 5'7" she could be a defensive liability in Geno's scheme.
  3. Yes, absolutely. But who is there ready to move to Storrs now? Are you thinking of Zhang Ziyu?

Doubt Geno brings KK and Ash off the bench in their final season. Geno really likes Ash on the floor and has reiterated this many times throughout her career, and Geno's probably not going to tinker with his starting PG if he doesn't have to.

In the SC game, KK and Ash totaled 12 points and no threes. 20 points per game is leaving with Azzi. Paige ain't coming back. Olivia and Gandy are newbies, Jana is Jana. Where does Geno get his offense from for next year?

Azzi averaged 17 points and 14 shot attempts. 17 points leaves. 14 average possessions should be available in theory. Azzi did not score 17 points on 0 shot attempts. Geno will figure it out.
