Not sure what went on relative to Gandy but she looked pretty good around the basket. I hope she is given an opportunity. I hope Jana gets better and does not play a distant 2nd fiddle to Olivia like this year relative to Serah. Admittedly I have a soft spot for Jana. Olivia appears to have offensive and defensive skills but frosh Bigs take time to develop.
One model for what could develop with Gandy, Jana and Olivia in the front court might be the Stewie teams with Stef, Morgan, Kaleena and Kiah.
In 2012-13, Kiah averaged 10 mins, 3 pts and 3 rebounds, and shot free throws poorly (60%). That is exactly what Geno wanted from her. In that front court, she was an intimidator and a decent rebounder for her minutes. If she scored a little, that was gravy. And I think it was pretty difficult for guards to drive into the trio of Stewie, Stef and Kiah, and in the effort to avoid getting blocked by Kiah, they'd get stuffed by the other two.
The following season, Morgan didn't play more than a few games, Kiah's minutes went up and so did her rebounds and blocks, and the intimidation factor remained high. The next year, Stef had graduated but Morgan was back. Kiah's minutes, points and rebounds remained the same (more or less) but her blocks nearly doubled (3.8/g). The last of the Stewie seasons, Kiah had graduated and Stewie took up the slack in blocks, becoming the ultimate defensive intimidator we all remember so well. She was supported by Nathalie Butler, who put up freshman Kiah numbers, though the blocks were much lower. This had become a much quicker team.
What's the point of this history? My question is whether Gandy can play a role like Kiah's. The emphasis shouldn't be on points and she needn't play more than 10 minutes. But if she can be a low post intimidator, alternating with Jana in the role, and take the pressure off Sarah, Blanca and Olivia. Kiah might as well have been a volleyball player for all that Geno expected of her. Basic footwork, a few rebounds, and as Megan Cuomo says, "just be big in the low post." And like Kiah, Gandy runs well (played soccer in school) and really wants to contribute. If Jana and Gandy can contribute exactly that for 20 or so minutes, and if Olivia can supply the offensive punch from the low post, while Sarah and Blanca do all the scary, high-skill things that Stewie and Morgan did.
Picture a lineup like this (starters in
bold):
- Sarah Blanca Olivia (or Jana or Gandy) with KK (Kayleigh Kelis Jovana) and Ash (Allie or Morgan)
This would allow Geno to toggle between big and small lineups with ease.
The question is, can Gandy contribute in this limited way?
