2026 Transfer portal

Wow major blow for Texas. I know they have wings coming in but Crump is a stud and will be one of the most coveted transfers this cycle.

Her finalists were Texas, Duke, and Ohio State. I could see her fitting in well at at either program. Duke graduates Ashlon Jackson and Ohio State loses Chance Gray, Crump would fit in well replacing either of those 2.

I wouldn't be shocked if programs like UCONN, UCLA or Vanderbilt make a push for her. She'll thrive a program that prioritizes perimeter shooting and spacing the floor on offense.
She’s the kind of long skilled wing we could really use…

Crump and Carlton possibly felt that Ol Vic was recruiting over them by bringing in Crittendon and Bjorn for 2026.

No. Crump was a big reason why 2026 Bjorn signed with Texas in November; they played club ball together. Hope Bjorn still comes to Texas, but there's already been two 2026 signees in Olivyah Edwards and Trinity Jones who asked to be released from their signed LOI's.

Carlton had a lot of ups and downs at Texas her first two seasons; some felt she would transfer out after her freshman season one year ago. Her younger 2026 sister signed with Houston in November.

So what turned Crump off on Texas after wanting Bjorn to join her there?

I have no idea if this applies to Crump, but with the money growing ever larger in WBB, street agents and other illegal and/or unethical middlemen are contacting players directly and shopping them under the radar. I have no doubt calls are being made to players by street agents saying, “I have a school in a P4 conference that’s interested in you and I can get you XYZ if you sign with me.”

Carlton might now be among the top three targets for Uconn, along with Addy Brown and Lara Somfai IMO. They were among the finalists for both Carlton and Somfai when recruiting them.

Carlton plays the same position as Sarah Strong and they were both class of 2024. I recall Carlton visited LSU officially. Her other finalists were UConn, South Carolina, and Arizona, but I don't think she visited any of those 3 officially.

I've wondered this since it happened, but why did she choose Iowa State? Even though she played her last two seasons of high school in San Diego, CA, I see that she now considers Missouri as her home state. Other than proximity, I couldn't figure out why she chose ISU.
She's from Kansas City.

are you just as disgusted with the salaries that coaches make?
I am. Not just women's basketball. Out of proportion to what I perceive as their value. No one needs to agree with me.

As to the post you were replying to regarding academics, one does wonder, on the other hand it was mentioned a couple of times on broadcasts during the tourney that a surprising number of players are graduating in 3 years. I find that interesting - to free them up to pursue a grad transfer? I have no idea, I'd love to know. I had a friend that graduated in 3 years many, many years ago. But his time wasn't taken up by athletics.

Almost all of the portal problems would be solved if (when?) there’s collective bargaining but that’s a hill the NCAA will die on because they’ll never admit these kids are employees. It’s such a shortsighted stance to take, which means it makes perfect sense to them 🤦‍♂️

you are 100% correct
Most on the board don’t seem to understand this

they take most of their courses online
If you’re motivated, you take them during the summer during the winter session I’m getting a degree in three years is very doable
I suppose my question to you is, what would you do with all of the money?

In the past, many players would be able to graduate in 3 because they stayed on campus over the summer working out and taking classes. Today I think more can do so, particularly with online classes and I do think some may be motivated to do it because it gives them options regarding the potential to grad transfer.

Or we understand but know that it's something the NCAA will never abide. Who knows. Maybe it'll happen eventually. I'm seeing things now in college sports that I never could imagine.

I think she's likely to go to a mid major. She's still quite raw and has an extensive injury history. I don't see her being a contributor on a P4 tournament caliber team.
So another Big East school?

She might be better than you think, but I'm just glad she is giving it a go. It is difficult to leave the friends behind I am sure, but there is enough talent that she should be playing.

Maybe a lower P4 program, American or A10. And I don't disagree--she might wind up being a lot better than I'm expecting.

Graduating in 3 is a combo of a couple things:

1- summer credits; many players including UConn's often spend summer semester on campus, taking classes and working on their game. Those credits help toward finishing early.

2- college credit from high school; with AP Courses and College Equivalent courses now taught in high schools, there is a chance to start college with some credits already on the record.

It can be, but seldom is, taking extra classes during regular semesters precisely as you point out, due to time pressure of sports.

Jay Bilas made this point during a College Game Day show over the weekend. A collective bargaining agreement would solve all of these issues as the athletes would have contracts which would be much more binding.

Hearing Calipari use the "what will they do when they graduate and get offered a $60K/year salary?" really ticked me off. If the athletes are properly supported, they have a small nest egg, no debt and can manage that salary accordingly. Isn't that what going to college is supposed to help them do? Learn to be a self-sufficient adult?

Wasn’t she the last player standing? Hope she knows to turn out the lights……

Not sure if I jinxed the Lady Vols, but wow what a difference a year makes since I awarded/made this banner.

Colleges do not help the average student with money management. Many sports programs do teach money management, but players also have people around them that impact their decision-making. Look at all the NBA players who despite financial advice from college and the league, mismanage their money. I will also say this is true for many average college students, who end up in credit card debt.

I should have phrased that differently as I was talking more about the overall college life experience. And yes, some college students do come out with debt and there are those who come out ahead. It's part of life and learning.

Sarah is considered a 4 first, but that clearly is a position of need for Uconn. They didn't use a backup 4 in the rotation, one of the two other 4's on the roster left and the other is in a long injury recovery. If Carlton or other potential 4's want 30 minutes a game, they probably won't consider Uconn.

But Sarah can play the 3, in fact it could be her best position, and last year she played a great deal at the 5. Her minutes could be split between all three positions freeing up significantly more minutes for another 4. Will that potential be enough to attract a top 4 that could start on many very good teams? I don't know, but it is pretty clear why Uconn would want one IMO.

@BRS24 Hopefully this helps with that spreadsheet you're working on. 😉

Dawn Staley received some (but not much) attention for saying recruits are “cheaper the second time around” at preseason SEC media days. But nobody outside of South Carolina circles likely heard the insider reports our staff expected many 2025 recruits to transfer after their FR season due to outlandish NIL promises other schools had no hopes of following through on.

So, as a Carolina fan, I’m happy to see the coaches were right.
