2026 Transfer portal

I'd love to see a system that rewards players that aren't changing schools every year.
Maybe every transfer counts as 1.5 scholarships against the limit on the team you transfer to.
2nd transfer, you now count as 2 scholarships.
Halfway not serious, but maybe a little bit serious....LOL
Quite a while ago wasn't there some kind of 5/8 rule? If you added more than 5 transfers in one year or 8 in 2 years you got penalized somehow. Maybe loss of a scholly. But it obviously went out the window, probably not long after being instituted. This was way before the portal madness, but even back whenever it was someone recognized a problem with too much player movement.

Her defense is...not good, IMO. Banghart did a great job of hiding her enough on nonscorers for UNC to win the games they should win, but she was a liability against better teams (or teams that had guards who could break her down).

I honestly don't think she can start in the SEC and I'm not sure how much she'd play for SEC contenders. TCU seems more of her speed if she wants to have a chance at starting.
Her Hoops does not like her defense. Tending to agree on second analysis.

Player will enroll at new school. Walk to gym and ask to play. If denied, they will sue to play in local State Court.

Court will issue injunction allowing "student at school to try out for team at that school", while actual court case grinds thru the system.

This rule, and portal in general, sets up an artificial barrier for student/athlete/employees to change jobs and/or compete in athletics for their school.

I'd prefer the old system too, but NCAA has not won a court case in about 20 years.
That's not even true. The NCAA won on appeal in O'Bannon and that was barely a decade ago.

Sure 😉. It's an interesting idea though because it's financial deterrent in a sense.

Was at a concert last night (sports isn't everything). Some thoughts on Grant;
  • She was not the primary distributor: That was Nivar with 130, followed by Aarnisalo with 105. Grant, however, did have 77.
  • However, she was in for her shooting: 42% on three-pt. shots and 44% overall.
  • 5'8" and not a particularly adept defender, but a good coach can hide that a bit.
  • I don't think the Harpring arrival is the primary cause here. Nivar is done, so there's technically room in the backcourt -- Banghart was playing three guards as often as not.
  • Don't see her in the SEC with the rock 'em, sock 'em defense.
  • With all due respect to our UConn Colleagues who want to stockpile talent, Fudd may be leaving but there are a number of other shooters that have been waiting their turn. I'm thinking Kayleigh Heckel thinks she should be on the court. A lot. Plus, there's a lot of frontcourt players that should be seeing the ball. Grant will know this.
  • My morning gut: The Va. native stays local and joins Megan Duffy at Va. Tech or head over to UVA who have Paris Clark and Romi Levy leaving.

Does ISU have anyone??

Ouch! I guess if you don’t have any teammates and you still want to play, you have to go somewhere else. The problem for any team that’s interested in Crooks is that in order for her to be successful whichever school she goes to has to be willing to build their entire offense around her, and she’s just a one year rental at this point in her career.

Agree.
Completely off topic. Woo hoo for the Columbia Lions and Coach Megan Griffith. Winning the WBIT playing the semi-finals (Wisc.) and Finals (BYU) on the road. Tight game against a game Cali team, but otherwise solid wins all the way.

I also don’t see Grant generating any interest at UConn who will be loaded at 1-3 next year with KK, Ash, Kayleigh, Allie, Kelis, Morgan (back healthy) and top Serbian recruit Jovanna Popovic.

Heck, if it comes to it, Sarah can play the point, as she did some against your team, when the Huskies decided that the best way to deal with the NDPOY, was to run KK into the corner on offense and let her stand there with HH guarding her, while UConn played 4 on 4.

Not a bad move when you have a player who can play "point forward." When teams jammed up ND in 24-25, Ivey would have Sonia Citron take over direction of the half-court to clear out the top and then set screens for HH and Miles.

The more I think about it, the more I can see Grant staying in Virginia. There is a need for a shooting combo guard at both ACC schools.

Minnesota potentially a fit for Audi Crooks.

You might be right. They REALLY need a post and might be willing to run a system compatible with her not running the court or playing much defense. Going to be interesting. None of the elite schools is going to change their entire scheme to accommodate her (which you have to do with her at post). If a good school, say a Minnesota, were to offer she should grab it. If she's fishing for a $1M payday I think she's going to be disappointed.

The only school with yuge NIL dollars to throw around that I could image building a one year team around her might be TCU. They have the one year need, the $$$ and a good coach that has proven he can build and assemble one year teams on the fly.

here we go batman GIF

It's a day before the Easter long weekend and the portal hasn't even officially opened yet. Scary thought is this is only the tip of the iceberg.

I just read that Iowa State now has 11 players in the portal (including Audi Crooks?) What the heck is going on?
I just glanced at their roster, and they list 13, one of which is a senior

Bill Fennelly is 68, and the longest-serving women's basketball coach in Division 1 Other than Geno.

Well Caldwell put her stake in the ground "it's my way or the highway."
There is a traffic jam on I-75.

One returnee: Civil. Two incoming-frosh.

I like Bill Fennelly BUT I know nothing of practices and such so I have no clue why so many are leaving the ship!
At TN you have to buy in big-time to play with that hockey sub plan! Most players want to earn more playing time!
That's why Geno & CD & staff are so amazing year after year bringing in great players/people/students! They may lose a few but none that says "wow we needed her!"
Geno makes no promises and leaves it on the player to earn her playing time!

The only player I could see UConn being interested in is a 3-point shooter. That's the biggest loss with Azzi's graduation.
I think if the right Big were available UConn would be interested. I really like the freshman from Syracuse, although there is no indication at present that she’s considering transferring.
