2025 WNBA Regular Season

Seeding is going to be interesting. The Dream seem to control their destiny with a very easy final three games. If standings hold that means they get Golden State. Without a doubt that would be the best first round series

On the other hand with an easy schedule the million dollar coach may still end up having to go through both the Liberty and the four-time COY. The tiebreakers in the event of an upset could be Byzantine

Must read for all you Golden State fans

The performance this year as outlined in this article confirms Nakase should be presumptive COY with a nod to Cheryl. The Sandra Bullock congeniality award still can end up in Phoenix.

Some finality on the Fever injuries today. Both Clark and Bibby are out for the rest of the season.

On a brighter side, this enabled the Fever to get Bree Hall back for a rest of season contract.
Indiana: the last refuge of West Coast cuts: Bibby and Hall (Golden State), Macdonald and Sims (LA). (and I say this with much affection - anyone who has worn the Valks jersey I am delighted to see stick a roster.)

I appreciate the sensitivity of some on the BY to the truism that you can't spell Dallas without a . . . .

I also suspect Golden State fans were sweating bullets thinking - "no way" can the team lose, at home to. . . .

All said and done Golden State showed poise and is in the post season. Even on TV you could tell the fans were INTENSE.

So, I'm guess at the top of the standings, NO ONE wants to be the 3 seed.

Best case scenario for Dallas. Hard fought loss, no one got injured though Paige had a scare in the 4th. Congrats to the Valkyrie. Love how balanced they are, and how you never know who is going to beat you. Burton did have a super clutch basket over Paige, and I can't lie, I felt awkward when I saw Kaitlyn Chen celebrating lol. It is really a wild accomplishment to make the playoffs. They haven't even had help from their draft pick. The fans were rocking tonight. Great scene for women's sports at the buzzer.

Did A'ja just win the MVP? Outplayed Collier, Aces get the win, their 13th straight. What she's been doing for more than a month now is incredible.
Give the woman her trophy.

Congrats to Golden State (and TheFarmFan).

In a league beset by all manner of problems, the Valkyries are a wonderful story.
😍😍😍

A digression that encapsulates everything (and nothing) about our season:

My season ticket holding group and I are in a W fantasy league, and the week my friend who sits next to me and I were paired off, we made a bet: the loser has to buy both of us a shot of the winner's choice at the next home game. I said if I won, we're taking fireball shots. I won, but jeeze - I couldn't make the poor man pay $32 for two fireball shots -- what am I, a monster?! -- so I snuck them in my socks through security. It worked!

That game happened to be our June 7 game against the Aces. We took the shots at the end of the first quarter, when we were tied with the Aces. After that, we went on to win by 27. We concluded the fireball shots brought our team the fuego, but they must be deployed only when the fuego is absolutely necessary.

Fast forward: since then, I've assiduously snuck a half dozen fireball shots in my socks every home game, and we've deployed them only as needed, only when we're down meaningfully in the third quarter, and only when the team needs some fuego. It has worked every time.***

Tonight, I almost didn't bring them -- we'd won four games in a row, we're playing the Wings, and it's kind of a pain to sneak six shots in my socks. But the woofing gods must be appeased, so I did. Low and behold: we're down 13 in the third, and things are not going well. I turn to my crew: is it time for the fireball shots? Yes, they say. We take them.

The fireball shots were +17 for the game, as we went from -13 to +4 over the last 14 minutes.

All of which is to say: Ballhall is a thing of myth, faith, and devoted fandom. I probably lost some long-term hearing tonight, and it doesn't bother me in the slightest. The Valkyries are without question the best story in professional sports right now, and I'm just extremely thankful to be a tiny footnote in their journey.

*** We've discovered through painful trial and error that they don't work against the Phoenix Mercury, because the fire only fuels the Phoenix. We are going to experiment with Curacao shots next season to see if that tamps them down.

While not a Fireball fan, I grow to appreciate you more and more everyday @TheFarmFan!

And what in the world is going on when Fireball shots cost $32 USD?????? I don't get charged that much for shots in the nightclub and the Toronto scene isn't cheap!!!!

Through college and her draft, everyone knew Wilson would be a star and one of the league’s top players, but not sure many anticipated that she could go down as the best to ever play in the W.

It’s not a distinction to make quite yet, but very much a possibility.

If Collier had played five or so more games I think she’d still be the favorite but A’ja has overtaken her now for me.

Hats off to Las Vegas and A'ja Wilson! Wow!! Not only did they win their 13th straight but they did it against my beloved Minnesota Lynx in a pretty convincing manner. I mean we own the season series, 3-1 but still, great game and win for Las Vegas. Ms. Wilson!? Wow! She made a statement on this whole MVP conversation. Napheesa has been the front runner on the MVP conversation but since went down with her injury awhile back, A'ja, and AT, have been gaining huge chunks of ground in the MVP conversation and last night, A'ja made a huge statement. Well done, A'ja! But I still rocks with my girl, Naphessa for MVP.

For Minnesota, it is on to the next game. We are facing another team that is on a hot winning streak and fun to watch, Golden State. The Lynx just have to regain that focus and come up and dominate. Drive for Five is still on and popping!

There should be some great games tonight with compelling narratives.

Sparks @ Dream: Sparks need the win to stay in the playoffs hunt. The dream need the win to stay in the battle for 2nd.

Sky @ Fever: No Reece or Clark yet again. Plus, the Fever desperately need a win to guarantee a spot in the playoffs.

Liberty @ Storm: Both teams desperately need a win. If the Liberty lose, they theoretically could be at risk to slide even further down the seeding. If the Storm lose, they could be at risk of not making the playoffs.

After my earlier predictions, I think I am making a revision at the 6-8 seedings. One thing I didn't consider is that the Lynx may not be putting as much effort into winning their remaining games, so that should heavily favor the Valkyrie odds of beating them once or twice.

6. Valkyrie 24-25 wins
7. Fever 23 wins (tiebreaker over the Storm)
8. Storm 22-23 wins

It’s so closer that I believe that “ best player on best team” will combine with “A’ja fatigue” by the voters to take Phee over the hump.

Who would have thought this would be a sentence someone would type this season?

Richard Cohen of Her Hoops Stats has already started doing post-mortems for not-making-the-playoff teams. First up, Chicago.
And it's even more-to-the-point than Ms. Reese's comments. BTW, much focus has been put on the GM's strategy and performance, so that bears watching. Two things I learned:

  • Like most teams, Chicago will virtually be starting from a small core of players on rookie contacts: Reese, Cardoso, Van Lith, Westbeld (Maddy).
  • They still have a draft pick in 2026: Connecticut's....which should still be pretty good.

Outside of that, whew.

If it was only for the second half of the season, sure. Phee was the POTM (and best player on the best team in the league) in May, June and July. Her injury may have screwed her chances, however.
