2025 WNBA Regular Season

I was mostly basing my statement off of win shares. I probably should have kept it open between the two as I went back and forth between Bueckers and Citron because of the above stats. The race for ROY is much closer than people think.
Using Win Shares to compare Paige and Sonia who are on two dissimilar teams (Wins, Defense) is flawed;
  • Win Shares (Total) approximates Wins; as of today, Dallas has 9 wins whereas Washington has 16 wins; so Paige is disadvantaged in this comparison (though compares favorably with (Win Shares / Wins) % with (3.2/9 = 35.6% Paige) vs (4.1/16 = 25.6%);
  • Defensive Win Shares punishes a player if she is on a poor defensive team; see Kyrie example &1.
&1 “A good example of this is Kyrie: 16-17 in Cleveland he had 0.028 DWS/48 and when he went to Boston he now had 0.067 DWS/48 more than doubling his total despite his RPM only improving slightly (-2.3 to -1.3), meanwhile Kyrie has really improved his D this year yet his DWS/48 has decreased to .063.”

Yeah, the thought about the total # of wins in the sample size hit me after the fact. Eh, I'm sticking with it for now just to watch y'all UConn fans here squirm. 😉

An interesting element of Citron's game is how few shots she takes to generate this offense. She only takes 11.1 attempts from the field, the fewest amount of the top 20 scorers in the W. The amount of shots have probably gone up a bit since Sykes has left and Citron is the #1 option in the Mystics' backcourt. However, she's always been selective.

What's the WNBA record for most points in a game by a rookie? Bueckers has 43, game isn't over yet. Why does LA have to work so hard trying to beat a team as bad as Dallas? Wings up 1 w/ 2 1/2 minutes left.

Oooh...not her best night, but looks like Plum came up with a buzzer beater to spoil Bueckers' 44 point explosion.

Found this: In July 1997, Cynthia Cooper, the eventual four-time champion and two-time MVP registered 44 points in a game as a rookie for the Houston Comets in a regular-season game against the Sacramento Monarchs.

So, it looks like Paige Bueckers and Coop have something in common --- 44 points. Wow.

The rookie record was set by Cooper--not a true rookie--and Paige tied it. It was also the highest total in the W by anyone this year. Paige shot 17-21, 4-4, and 6-6.

I like Citron's game, but she's no Paige Bueckers.

Wow. Hard hedge by Geiselsoder almost at half court, but once KP finally got around her it was like the parting of the red seas. One defender started to come over to help, but then moved back toward Allemand spotted up on the 3 point line. Between the 2 I think you should be more worried about KP than Allemand w/ a couple seconds left.

I love Kelsey Plum but she’s now my least favorite player for ruining what may be the best rookie game in the history of the league

ROY conversation is officially over

Wow. Reminded me of how Mitchell/Sims would take high screens against the Sun/Mystics bigs, wait for the switches by a big and then just get to the lane. In Plum's case, however, she took it back into the lane for the driving banker.

17-21 from the floor for Paige? 4-4 from three and perfect from the line. If you were scribbling her name as ROY in pencil, just switch that writing instrument to black or blue ink. Done deal with this game.

I wouldn't say it is officially over. But yes, the door is shut until further notice. If Citron were to have a 40+ points game or a multi-game streak of 30+ points, we're right back in this conversation. With that said, I can't remember Citron ever doing the above feats, so it seems almost impossible to overcome.

Personally, the ROY discussion is done as per this all time reaction thanks to this Raptors legend. 😉

What I'm more interested in is who everyone thinks should be part of the All Rookie team. Bueckers, Citron, Rivers jump out to me instantly but who else deserves to be on the list?

I think Iriafen will get a nod.

Oops, pressed send too soon! I'd also like to see Janelle Salaün from the Valks recognized. Lacan has played well for the Sun, but I'm not sure she's played enough games to qualify.

Agree with those three (Bueckers, Citron and Rivers) and submit these two to round out the team for your consideration:
  • Kiki Iriafen, Mystics. 12.7 ppg and 8.6 rpg.
  • Janelle Salaun, the undrafted rookie forward from France, playing for the Valkyries. 10.4 ppg and 4.7 rpg.

Awesome to see.

Love to see this!

Is it me, or is Dearica Hamby the least heralded star in the WNBA? I was just looking at some stats, and she is in the top ten in the league in points, rebounds, steals, and PER. The only players with better player efficiency ratings the last time I checked are A'ja, Phee, and AT.

I know LA has not been having a great season, but how did Dearica not make the All-Star team? That's just bonkers to me. I actually think both she and Azurá should have been there, but Dearica especially was a big miss by the fans and the coaches.
