You're not wrong. Staley has an old school, tough love approach that is ill suited for some of her players. She needs another tool in her toolbox.

OK, let's dissect this. First, there is just speculation about her interest in UConn, or even less, UConn's interest in her. Second, Kaitlyn was a mature, experienced grad student in a system similar to UConn, and as such was able to fit in as an on-court leader able to work with and enhance the abilities of superstars like Paige. Next year it will be Azzi and others and I doubt that just any young inexperienced transfer (remember that JuJu ran the team) would do the same.

Every roster is different and the perceived needs of each change. Paige and Chen are no longer on the team, that is two players that are able to facilitate and create their own shots from multiple areas off the roster. Outside of Fudd and Strong, UConn doesn’t have many perimeter players on the roster that can create looks for themselves and others.

Whether JuJu ran the team or not, it was stated throughout the year the staff had plays designed for Heckel specifically to create. That’s something UConn would likely need moving into next season.

I have to agree with Dillon's take. At FSU, Latson had the run of the floor, knowing the offense ran through her. Does anyone not think Fulwiley is as talented as Latson? Put Fulwiley on another team and given free reign, she would easily put up Hannah Hidalgo numbers. I don't think there are many better shooters in the country than Tessa Johnson.

It's not a talent issue--it's a production issue. Lay didn't produce at the level that would've made Latson a luxury instead of a necessity. Having the "run of the floor" works both ways, as it also makes it easier for defenses to key in on you. Despite being on the first page of every scouting report against FSU, Ta'Niya was able to lead the nation in scoring and did so with higher shooting splits than Lay.

There are better shooters in the country than Tessa, but that doesn't mean that Tessa isn't a good shooter. She's an INCONSISTENT shooter, which was the problem this year. People see "47% from the field and 43% from three" and are convinced that this alone is indicative of her impact. But a 43% 3-point shooter can shoot 6-7 from three one night and 0-7 from three the next. That's why context is important. It's important to actually watch the games.

Back to Fulwiley: If Lay plays on another team, she likely could put up Hannah Hidalgo numbers. However, if she's not actually leading her team to conference championships and Sweet 16s (like Hannah has done), does it really matter? That would mean that she's not having a Hannah Hidalgo-like impact. Numbers don't mean squat if they're not impactful. We'll see what Lay does--she does have a lot of ground to make up if she's going to challenge the likes of Hannah and JuJu for individual honors.

It takes a certain type of player who can readily excel coming off the bench. Who knows how SC's season would have turned out if Fulwiley and Johnson were starters, and/or received starter's minutes, never having to look over their shoulders after making a mistake.

I agree that it takes a certain type of player to excel coming off the bench, which is why I thought, at that time, that Joyce was more deserving of Sixth Woman of the Year than Lay. I disagree with the second part of this. Despite not having a dominant scorer on the roster, Dawn Michelle Staley was able to guide the team to a Top 2 finish nationally. Not starting Tessa or Lay didn't cause South Carolina to lose the championship. Those extra 3-5 minutes per game played by our seniors were not the difference between a title and a title game loss. The inability of the sophomore guards to step up and present a near-impossible challenge to CDS is the reason why this year's team didn't win it all. Again, Dawn's not mining the portal for the NCAA's leading scorer if she knows that Tessa and Lay could produce at that level.

Is Lulu Kesin a credible source? I have only seen Fulwiley twice, against UConn. She seems to have incredible athletic skills, her block on Sarah was impressive. But to me it seemed like every time she touched the ball on offense, she tried to take a shot. She did pass once tho when she was going in for a shot and ended up in no man's land, resulting in a turnover trying to pass the ball. I know that I am looking at a small snapshot but to me she needs to go to a team where she is the chosen star, along the lines of JuJu and Caitlin Clark.
And wherever she ends up, I hope they aren't on our schedule.

1. I’m not saying they’re point guards. I don’t think in UConns system we need to adhere to strict positional basketball anyways but still. My point is that in terms of what a point guards role is. All of those players I mentioned can take on aspects of that role in the offense wether that’s initiating the offense in the half court, ball handling, passing/setting up teammates, defensive assignments, etc. And I’m not saying we can’t take in a point guard from the portal I’m saying I think if we do it should be to maintain or improve our current abilities at that position and I don’t think Heckel does that for us, whereas I think Kaitlyn did. Very key distinction there, seems that you’re overlooking that on purpose.

2. I actually think you’re downplaying Kaitlyn’s role on this seasons team. Heckel cannot take or replace Kaitlyn’s role. She’s a sophomore who played a marginal role with decent numbers on a good team. She is not an all conference POY graduate transfer (one and done) like Chen who came in with a proven record of high performance against top rated teams out of conference, and already had a bit of UConn pedigree playing for a UConn alum in a similar offensive system. We will have two higher-ceiling true PG on the roster next season, why do we need to spend 3 scholarship years and a roster spot on a player who is not an improvement on what we’ll already have. Thats my point. I’m not saying Heckel is not good or wouldn’t contribute anything, I’m stating my observations at the margins.

I think you are wrong. Heckel is a pretty goods ball player. And yes she can take over Kaitlyn's role. She is an aggressive defensive baller. She is a tough kid.
