2025 Transfer Portal - UConn Interest Only

Come on Hurley we can't afford 2 years in a row of bad recruiting. We need some athletic biggs with muscle !
Wait, WHAT? Bad recruiting? They were ranked in the top 10 by pretty much every single publication in the country. Before the season started, pretty much everyone on here was predicting a threepeat and now Hurley is getting bagged for having a bad recruiting class?

UConn has 3 McDonald's All Americans in the same damn class for 2025.....

You all need to get a grip. You can't win every year.

I think the point is that recruiting rankings don't really matter once you're on campus. McNeeley was a hit, Reed was a hit.... Mahaney, Nowell, Abraham were misses. I wouldn't call it a horrible recruiting year if your hit rate is 40%--just not a very good one

any opinion on these guys?

Starting PFs (if Karaban leaves)
Alvaro Folgueiras R. Morris 6'9" 215 19.2 pts per 40 12.4 rbs per 40 (Providence?)
Keshawn Murphy Miss State 6'10" 230 19.5 12.3
Jamichael Stillwell Milwaukee 6'8" 225 18.5 15.2
Malique Ewin FSU 6'11" 230 21.7 11.6
Darrion Williams Texas Tech 6'6" 225 20.1 7.3
Nick Pringle South Carolina 6'10" 220 15.4 10.2

AK Okereke Cornell 6'7" 235 21.7 7.2
Derrion Reid Alabama 6'8" 220 17.0 7.9

Backup Centers
Noah Amenhauser C Carolina 7'2" 255 19.3 10.7 1.4 blocks per 40
Enoch Boakye Villanova 6'11" 255 7.7 11.2 1.2
Demetrius Lilley LaSalle 6'9" 245 16.0 12.0 0.6
Doryan Onwuchekwa Ga Tech 6'11" 240 7.7 10.8 1.3
Matthew Van Komen Elon 7'4" 260 10.4 13.7 4.0

Backup PFs (if Karaban stays)
Owen Aquino Liberty 6'8" 230 14.0 8.9
Ezra Ausar Utah 6'8" 242 21.6 8.6
Amar Kuljuhovic N Dakota 6'8" 225 17.4 11.1
Justin McBride Nevada 6'7" 238 16.8 9.0
In terms of backup center, Boakye is exactly the type of guy we need: a no-nonsense, strong defensive low-post center.

Also, adding a capable backup center opens up more opportunities for two-big lineups w/ Reibe at the 4.

Murphy and Stillwell now off the board

Murphy to Auburn
Stillwell to UCF

Is currently out of eligibility. Applying for a waiver. Doubt he gets it.

No one ever saw Abraham but the coaches in practice. We don’t know what he will turn out to be but usually fans get an extended look at a player before calling him a miss. At least we saw Nowell.

Just doing some quick looking, killing some time:

-JaKobe Coles is grad transfer seeking a medical waiver. Unsure of status. Other than that, pretty decent metrics. 3pt shooting is a crapshoot. Other than 23-24 at TCU where he shot 42%, has been consistently in the 28-32% every other year.

I'd ride with Stewart & Ross vs. him as a backup. Would generally be an inferior 1-yr replacement for Alex.

Abraham wasn't supposed to be a freshman wonder. We will be able to see firsthand if he was Big East capable as he develops at Georgetown.

As for the other "misses," we have to keep in mind that the UConn System is kind of new for the coaches. They took their system and got it to work with the players that had on hand. Now they are trying to find guys they view as "system fits" and they seem to be struggling.

We still have the incoming freshman class that was recruited around the "system." We will see how they perform next season and beyond.

In the meantime, they seem to be looking for players that match people who were successful in the program. Newton, Demary. Diarra, Smith.

and Nowell battled through multiple injuries (shoulder and ankle) and never moved the same or handled the ball as well after the injuries

I posted about this. Especially the shoulder part. And it got removed. That kid probably was too injured for us to get an honest read on him. Shoulder injuries will limit your ability to fully move or use that arm for several months. In the NIL era, to expose the extent of an injury probably hurts a player’s value.

Liam Murphy, 6'7" 220# W/F from N. Florida (previously Columbia). From Staten Island, NY.

Would be an interesting/potentially valuable bench piece. A bigger "Joey C" type player.

6th man at UNF. Shot 42.3% on a TON of 3pt shots (246!). No idea how his defense is, general metrics aren't great but I have not watched a single UNF game and their KP defense is horrendous (#353) so it may also be due to the whole team!

it's hard watching a ton of talent drop off the portal board
trust in Hurley . . .

Gosh, maybe you should see the success rates at other programs lmao

To be honest guys- throughout the Hurley era amongst the transfers who left the program haven’t made a huge impact with other teams- hopefully for Nowell & Abraham that changes.

And I'm still not sure I'd call either one of them a "miss", per se. They absolutely could have used meaningful minutes from Nowell at PG, but he was injured twice, and that definitely impacted his ability to contribute and develop. The "transfer portal era" is just a different animal, now. They were both 4 star recruits, but that doesn't necessarily mean you're going to play meaningful minutes as a freshman, and in days gone by, probably not. Now, if you don't, you're out the door. I honestly don't know where or when Abraham was supposed to get in the lineup, frankly.

There was no opportunity for him to show himself. If he proves out at GTown and Alex doesn’t return it will still be a wasted talent . But we will see. Who actually saw what he could do? Players and coaches. That’s it unless someone here was getting into practices.

We haven't been mentioned in a while, but do you think Nate Ament could be holding out for the AK decision. He kind of does some similar things as AK. Or he could be waiting for Cooper to make his decision.
