2025 Transfer Portal - UConn Interest Only

You realize our first 4 titles came with starting PGs under 6-foot-3?

I mean, I'd kill for another Tristen, and I hope we get Nait George (who I believe is our top priority). But I don't think the staff is ruling out anyone who can do the job of high-level shot creation at this point.
And ?
this ain’t the ncaa of yesteryear the game has changed
are there some small guards that can dictate & control the game as a small guard yes but it not likely those cases are one offs & with the style of defense Hurley likes to run we need bigger guards who can hold there own 1-4
as the saying goes “you can’t teach size”

Auburn's starting guards are 6-1 and 6-3
Florida's starting guards are 6-2 and 6-2
Houstons' starting guards are 6-1 and 6-4.

Bigger is better and I'm glad we got Silas, but cmon man. There's no way we'd turn down a Pettiford, a Clayton or a Cryer.
Bigger is better when they are good. Just bigger alone means nothing.

Talent is talent is talent. We can't recruit size at the loss of talent. But if we've got 6 guys in the portal that fit our culture with skills, and one is 6'5 and the others are 6'1 or 6'2, it makes sense in Hurley's system to prioritize the bigger player.

If any of them enter the portal and UConn shows interest, I'd be thrilled. It's not the height, it's the skill of the player at that height. And so far in the portal this year, those "shorter" guards don't have the elite skills.

it makes sense to prioritize the best player.

Well, yeah. Duh. But look at the portal... Who is going to be the best guard of Demary, Stirts, Dent, Gillespie, Wooley, Conwell or Dedan? You could make a case for any of them. So yeah, it made sense to aggressively go after a guy like Demary who seems to fit our culture and is also huge

UConn will never be in the position to ask for a lineup of the best possible players so they can pick the tallest of the lot.

Talent is talent is talent.

Tahaad Pettiford was UConn’s first choice for a ‘24 point guard recruit, so while yes, they like big guards, it’s not exclusionary. If he had waited to commit until the summer (and after the first championship) instead of February, maybe a few things go a little differently.

If it’s not the height what happened to Sears in his last game? Every time he drove in he got stuffed. His outside shooting was bad too.

I mean, even assuming you're right then the guys listed 6'2 in college are really 6'0 in socks at the combine. So we can move the whole definition of what a "small guard" is 2 inches

No again, because those can range from a half inch to 2 inches. And we don't know if others are true heights with or without shoes to begin with

Foot speed-Wingspan- Ball skills to get open-BBIQ-Vertical jump-Tenacity on D-All effect how big a player plays. Solo's wingspan is 6'10''. Guessing they're not a ton of 6'3'' CBB guards with his wingspan/vertical jumping numbers. How he uses those skills and how he develops with the coaching staff/SnC staff is part of growing while at school.

Old news but relevant-Bazz and Boat gave up 5-6 inches to the twins playing guard at Kentucky in the NC game and made them look ridiculous. For that game-In that era- size didn't matter.

No, your wrong

Check their combine measurements
It's all relative. Everyone in college and the NBA is listed at their height with shoes on. So if you think 6-5 is very good size for a college guard then all the 6-5 guys you think are good size are really 6-3.5 to 6-4 in bare feet also.

Tristen Newton was listed as 6-5 at UConn. What do you think he's listed at in the NBA? Yes, 6-5.

Cam Spencer was listed as 6-4 at UConn. What do you think he's listed at in the NBA? Yes, 6-4.

What?

It doesn't matter one iota what they are listed at

We are talking about realities here
