2025 Inbound Portal Options (December 9th - 28th 2024 & April 16th - 25th 2025 Cycle)

Evers has talent otherwise he wouldn't have had the offers he did when coming out of high school. He was hurt this year on and off. He needs to improve, no doubt, but we have no idea what he can do if completely healthy. I have hope for him but they would bring in another quarterback like Castellanos or someone else

That is true. My point has been if our hs recruits never beat out transfers, what does that say about who we attract out of hs. I know Turner got his shot. The other side of the coin is that transfers from P4 schools especially probably had a lot of good hs offers, can’t beat out the competition and see programs like ours as a place where they have the best - not guaranteed - shot to see the field. And they might in fact be better overall than our hs recruits.

It ultimately says that a 20 year old with experience most often starts in front of an 18 year old without experience.

You've been on this line of questioning for 2 days now. If you have a statement that you want to make, I would rather you just make it. If you believe that our coaching staff is recruiting the "wrong kids" (or incapable of recruiting "the right ones"), I'd love to hear your strategy for how to do things differently...

Hurley talks all the time about the difference in philosophy behind fielding an 'old' team vs. a 'developmental' team. Two totally different approaches.

You are as stubborn as I am I did not say that we we are recruiting the wrong kids. The statement, if you need to be spoon fed, is that I am reacting to a bunch of comments that have half the board salivating over the transfer portal every time a QB pops up as if they are what we need. Which implies our own recruits are too speculative as opposed to a kid with some age or experience. Which begs the logical question, how do our recruits ever have the edge as you yourself say a 20 year old often gets the edge, at what age do our hs recruits get the experience to beat out your transfer before they transfer out themselves. And I would wager that the same Byers did cartwheels when Wellever signed. Obviously i want the best players, but a lot of this board is looking elsewhere even after bitching about the shortcomings of our previous portal QBs. Sorry if this annoys you. Go Huskies.

If the kid is good enough to start for us, he beats out the transfer. How's that? You're over thinking this. We have had a horrible track record with QBs we have recruited. Not since Cochran have we had a HS recruit that looked like "the guy". That was under P and he also brought in Lagow and Boyle. Those guys are in their 30s. Transfers and portal is the game right now for all schools, not just us.

I agree that if a hs recruited kid is good enough they will get the job. And I get the portal is part of the game - but hs recruiting is too. But I find it borderline hilarious that the same people who are so in love with the portal are many of the same people who are happy when a Wellever commits and complain about all of our previous portal QBs. Obviously every year is different and Zion got a shot. I also know that if Dan’s comment about 20 year olds having edge is more often true than not, the likelihood that our hs recruits will stick around for 3 years or get live game experience before transferring themselves becomes totally dependent on injury or the guy who they couldn't beat out in the first place not cutting it. We haven’t had a single QB transfer in in several years people were so excited about that the portal should seem all that attractive. This year our 1 and 2 QBs were both transfers. McDonald seems not to have been a real contender. So was he a hit or miss? Wellever was being red-shirted so we should get to see if he can win the job.

I love Mora's view on transfers. He said that they can look at everything on film and know what they are looking for in terms of play and make up. However, they are looking for kids who want to play with the intensity and attitude that fits this program. He stated what we all saw this year by saying they really knocked it out of the park this year with the portal players they landed. The players bought in and were upgrades.

It's not just about gaudy stats. You need a player that can mesh right away with the team and coaching staff. It's part of what makes this process tougher. You're basically making a new team each year with players who have never played together. Being able to mesh quickly and easily is huge and it sounds like Mora looks for that.

Need to get a QB with experience. Worth it to spend money on this position. Stop taking chances on QBs that were rated high in high school but have not seen the season since. There is a reason they have not seen the field at all. Evers and Roberson perfect examples.

Wrong take.

You're no longer building "a program".

You're now building "a team" for that year.

Why? Because as you see with a Durell Robinson. Individual success of younger players will bring with it vultures promising bags of money.

I would take 11 Jayden McDonald types in a minute.

I would prefer not to have "one and dones", but with NIL and the portal, these are now a necessity to fill in the holes. We no longer have the luxury of building long-term with players, especially when they can leave so freely. The development, in my mind, is more of a framework of coaching, strength conditioning, and schemes that are easy to execute but not so easy for the opposing teams to easily defend against. We are in the "reload and repeat" paradigm. I'd prefer players who want to stay and graduate with UConn degrees, but I'd also really like for my football team to win more games than it loses and to go bowling. So, commence the free agency portal signings.
