UConn needs to find a QB that actually has played FBS. No way Miller Moss is coming to UConn but there will be plenty of QBs with experience they should be able to get. Need to offer $500k plus. Especially if NIL is expected to be $2 million plus. Biggest weakness on the team is a good throwing QB.
No where was that more evident when UConn switched from Nick Evers to Joe Fagnano in the UAB game. But it was also evident in the Syracuse game. I know UConn couldn't get a QB like Kyle McCord, a QB that had experience at Ohio State, but if he was switched with Joe Fagnano in that UConn-Syracuse game, UConn wins that game.

Interesting article in the Wall Street Journal today about the flipping of LSU's 5* QB recruit Bryce Underwood to Michigan. Larry Ellison(worlds 4th richest person) contributing to the Michigan NIL fund now.

Not exactly on topic, but is QB related.

It’s Xmas and it’s the time of year one can ask for anything, but seriously guys - manning, moss? Let’s focus on a former highly recruited kid who can’t get on field. That is NE 2.0. That’s our ceiling, for now.
You have to trust your staff, but I'd rather grab someone who has proven he is good at the CUSA/Sunbelt/MAC level than someone at a P-4 school who has decided he hasn't seen a pathway to get on the field. But maybe that's just me.

I know he probably won’t do it, but I would love to hear Mora honestly answer what kind of QB he is looking for in the portal. I know that’s tricky because he doesn’t want to throw Roberson or Evers under the bus, but I tend to agree with other sentiments in this thread that some sort of starting experience matters.

You can keep signing ex-4 stars and ‘hope’ they finally get it…or get a 2 or 3 star who has had reps who has shown they can play. Yes the upside may not be as great, but as we saw with Fagnano…you don’t need a star…you just need competence at QB. But..i do think that Fagnano was at the low end of competence. I don’t think he is the model of what they want….but he showed reps are better than stars.

Also…regarding Welliver…he may be the answer..but as we know…the team needs multiple qbs who can start.
Obviously was a good thing we had Fagnano this year, but that was a solid FCS starter who came because he had a relationship with our OC. If you're pulling from FCS, the guy needs to be a star. Solid starter from G-5 might work, but not from FCS.

That’s the floor. You wanna get an FCS guy to hold clipboard, I’m in.

We have other QBs. The thing is, are you looking for a starter or an insurance back up. If a starter, what does that say to a Wellever. I get the significance of the portal in today’s world , but young QBs especially are looking to play sooner than later. If a program is going looking for a more experienced starter all the time before a Wellever or a McDonald gets a chance, that is one message to recruits. And also to other kids like Evers who came through the portal. Evers is just an example, obviously he has had a chance and has had issues that may or not be related to his health. Seems like most names mentioned so far would be viewed as immediate starters which would impact the younger QBs on the roster or Evers if he stays. Obviously we want the best we can get at QB.

Everyone is always getting recruited over. The message is step up. Convince us beyond a shadow of a doubt in practice and force us to use you in a game.

That is one message. There are many messages being considered by both current roster members and portal guys looking to see the field fast.

We have no idea what Welliver is, but the coaches do and I will trust their judgement on that. I suspect they bring in someone with experience for competition, then it’s open season for NE, CW, TM, and the new guy.

I love the optimism, 8 wins possibly 9 is a great season. UConn Football is on an upward trajectory. That being said, there is a pecking order with elite transfers and UConn is low. Miller Moss isn't coming here.

A soph or frosh starter at FCS level, Fagnano-esque, catch lightning in a bottle with our coaching

Maybe we should help Larry find a UConn gal. NIL team get on this!

A guy I find intriguing is CJ Montes in the portal out of Fordham. Started his career at New Mexico. Got hurt early this year but in 2023, threw for almost 3k yards with 26tds and 1int. Led them to an upset over Buffalo as well. One thing is for sure, there will be no shortage of guys with film and production for them to kick the tires on.

Possible Larry has had multiple wives. Larry did not even graduate from college. Spent one semester at the University of Chicago. You know the powerhouse sports teams University of Chicago have had….

Not sure Fagnano was lightning. More like the static electricity from rubbing a balloon against your hair and sticking it to the wall
Sorry, not what I meant. you never know, get a young Fagnano type and you might catch lightning in a bottle
Think McNair, Roethlisberger etc, A young productive FCS QB who might respond to upgrade in comp level and coaching. Love Joe, but he will not be playing on Sunday

Reese Poffenbarger is back in the portal. Was a baller at Albany but behind Cam Ward at Miami and apparently isn't their first choice for next year.

another possible QB for uconn: Cade McNamara, quarterback for the Iowa Hawkeyes. Joining the portal. He previously played for the Michigan Wolverines, winning a Big Ten Conference title as the starting quarterback in 2021, and was a backup behind J. J. McCarthy in 2022.
