2024 Coaching Carousel gets an early start…

People say that about UConn. Philly papers asking if temple should quit football all together. Never good.
Our brand has excitement and potential swirling. Umass and Temple have maroon as their main color... so boring.

UMass has never put the money in football like UConn. The comparisons to me have always been insulting.

Temple had a great vibe going until Rod Carey. Now that have gone backwards to where they were before Al Golden. They have rich alumnae, so they could get NIL money. Their problem is they play in an NFL stadium and attract maybe 12K fans in a pro sports city. The school itself needs to decide if their is a path to P4, if not, they will be a lower G5 program.

Temple has some upside potential. When they have good coaches they have had solid teams. Rhule, Golden, Collins and Addazio all were fine. With Drayton they took the easy and cheap route and it burned them. It isn’t easy but it is doable.

I think UMass will be fine in the MAC. They have something to play for, and while it might take a season or two they will be competitive. And for all the whining about UMass basketball taking a step down, including by people who should know better, come on It isn’t like they have been burning it up in the A10. It’s been 10 years since their last NCAA trip. Before that it was back in the 1990s. And the MAC is capable of getting 2 bids on occasion. Martin seems like a good coach and they’ll do fine there. It’s actually kind of sad what’s happened to UMass athletics other than hockey. I always thought they had potential to be a good program. They really should have been invited to join the Big East when the additions of Marquette and DePaul happened. Maybe when Cincy and Louisville happened.

I hope we keep both on our football schedule.

I’m sorry you’re insulted, but Our own fanbase debates whether we should shut football down.

Don Brown is out.
Sad state of affairs in Amherst.

Would love to hear any reflections from the BY, on where we think UMass should go.
I do believe a healthy UMass is good for us as a region, even if them getting better means it is not a pretty-much-guaranteed win.

They need a Jim Mora - a respected name with NFL/P4 experience (ideally as HC) and the mental drive to pull their program out of the mud.
Not sure what else to say. Feeling sad for those folks, I guess.

I know it's not UConn but I do consider these guys related to us, even as they head to MAC.

They should have let Brown finish the season. I listened to a UMass Football Spaces last night, and I had no idea how much of a mess Walt Bell left behind. It was bad, like 50 players on Academic Probation and more. Brown has spent two years cleaning that mess up and trying to get them out of the negative and back to Zero.

I don't think anyone good will want the UMass job. Bamford is not a good guy to work for and the program.

I genuinely hope they get it together too, but I will hate them when we play them.

Previously, I was rooting for UMass football because I believed that there was a potential for UConn and UMass football to be aligned in a conference. With UMass headed to the MAC, that is no longer a possibility. So to be honest there is no real scenario where UMass football success helps UConn at all, and actually there is a competition for recruits and portal players going forward, so it's probably in our long term interest for them to fail.

Nope. Competition creates success. Iron sharpens iron. The better college football is in the region the better it is for everyone. You have a BCU attitude.

Looking at those two job report cards sure paints a gloomy picture. Those were our grades in 2021, from which we've surely improved in most categories. Haven't been to the Temple boards in a bit, but last I read those that wanted their staff gone after their loss to us finally got their wish.

Are all these early firings so teams can get a head start on the portal with a new staff? I don't understand why we can't just do one portal in the spring and let the season fully play out in the fall. Would be a much better way to treat people like Don Brown.

I would hate to see Harasymiak at UMass.

Agree. Of all the candidates I have seen potentially listed for UMass, the only one that bothers me is Harasymiak.

He is a talented up and coming coach who I thought would have been a decent fit at UConn before we hired Mora.

They could get Urban Meyer and I wouldn't worry about them.

The difference between UMass and UConn is us. We have a much larger support base and it isn't even close...

You figure once a coach is fired, players will be free to enter the portal. By firing the coach and trying to hire as quickly as possible, it gives the incoming coach(es) time to evaluate & retain current players while also looking into the portal to see who can be brought in. By the time spring comes around, the framework of the team (but definitely not the final version) should be in place. I agree with you that the portal should be just a once yearly event, but I don't think we're heading there. College free agency is here, for better or worse, and we'll see less building and more restocking (and not just because of graduation) every year.
