“I had to undergo several surgeries, and my bills were in the tens of thousands of dollars. And on top of that, I was stressed about the potential of my injuries keeping me from playing again,” Prince said in a statement. “Even with all of this facing me, I was still unable to receive any outside compensation from endorsements or social media because of the NCAA. It’s unfair. ... For all the hard work college athletes put in, for all the risks we take and injuries we sustain, and for all the money we generate, we should at least be able to share in the profits that can be made off of our own names, images and likenesses. If not us, who can rightfully claim that and profit from it?”



I do sympathize that she shouldn't have to pay for her surgeries considering she got injured playing for USA basketball. The outside compensation/ability to make side income I also understand, but just seems a bit odd that it's coming from Prince whose name/image/likeness is very limited, as she doesn't have a huge social media following and has never played a game of college basketball.

This is one of the reasons I am confused. If she was hurt while playing/trying out for team USA then I don't think she should be held totally responsible for her bills.

I am not trying to get down on a player I've never seen in person and think it's unfortunate she has been caught in this bind but for someone who seems to want a career playing basketball she is taking a very strong stance very early in her career.

Agreed. Would make a lot more sense coming from her teammates rather than her. Ionescu is directly responsible for the huge fan turnouts and has 500k+ instagram followers who she couldnt make a dollar off of as a student athlete. Or Satou Sabally who also is a big name and has almost 50k followers, and she left college a year early specifically to help out her family financially.

I am curious how socual media revenue plays out for Paige Bueckers. She already has 500k followers on Instagram and that number will likely grow big time in college. That's serious money (several hundred thousand per year) she's missing out on by being a student athlete.

Let the Male BB players " Duke ;) " it out in court. Once the men carve out some compensation, the women (like Paige) will benefit.

That's quite a difference between some of them. I would assume some players cultivate their social media platforms much more than others? I would think Gray is a popular player and probably the highest profile of any on this list, but doesn't have a massive following on twitter. The fact that several just graduated HS players have way more followers also seems to indicate age plays a big role in this as well.

Bethune Cookman held an emergency meeting yesterday to discuss its future. It would make sense for them to bolt for the SWAC as that would put the SWAC at 12 schools.

What the heck is happening to the MEAC? Schools are fleeing it.

In other conference defection news, NEC stalwart Robert Morris is joining the Horizon League in 10 of its 15 sports (including WBB) starting this coming season. Its football team will play as an independent in 2020 and in the Big South starting in 2021 (becoming the second non-southern football school in the Big South, along with Monmouth).

I coach with one of the McNair brothers. Yes, those McNair brothers. Tim is our HS football coach and AD and his son plays for Alcorn, his brother Fred is the head coach at Alcorn. Glad to see FAMU in the SWAC and the potential for some GREAT halftimes with Jackson State.

By all measures, the HBCU's in general have fallen on hard times academically. Graduation rates are terrible, the degrees are becoming all-but-worthless - it's an under-reported scandal. Just a few weeks ago the NCAA announced sanctions for those teams that failed to meet the (frankly, weak) requirements for student progress. Two-thirds of the sanctioned schools were HBCUs.

Apparently some schools are trying to break the cycle of low expectations by moving into mainstream conferences. There's probably no better way than switching conferences to signal to students and faculty that the emphasis will now be on the "college" and not the "historically black" part of the HBCU designation. And it sends a message to coaches and staff that the "HB" part can't be used as an excuse for poor classroom performance or behavior. Hopefully it works for these schools and their students.

Think Kellie has covered over same rule as Pat & Holly since Zaay was coverup in few games she played last year.
 
I went back and looked at a few photos. This wrist tat on McCoy was covered in games.
