One thing that should be noted about Jake Wallace is his steady year by year improvement, not only at UConn, but also with his summer ball stints with the Bristol Blues of the Futures League and with the Bourne Braves.

>> Chase Gardner, LHP, UConn
The big lefty threw an 11-pitch three-up, three-down second inning. During that stint, Angels manager Mike Scioscia said about Gardner, “He’s got great life on the outside of the zone. He’s got a little funk to his delivery but does a great job of getting away from those right handed hitters and can control the count and control the zone.” Gardner made 15 starts on the mound for the Huskies this spring in helping them reach the title round of the Conway Regional. He throws from a three-quarter arm slot and his heater can hit 91-92 with an accompanying biting curve ball.<<

More from Aaron Fitt on the Cape Cod League All Star game and Jacob Wallace:

Cape League All-Star Weekend Notebook | D1Baseball.com

>>• Oregon righthander Ryne Nelson showed the most velocity of any pitcher in the All-Star Game, sitting at 93-95 and bumping 96 in a scoreless ninth for the East. A few other pitchers touched 95: Connecticut’s Jacob Wallace, Western Illinois’ Ian Koch and Miami’s Gregory Veliz, all of whom also showed quality sliders. Veliz’s slider had the most power, coming in at 87-88 mph. Wallace recorded the final two outs for the West in the ninth, striking out the only two batters he faced, and showcasing one of the best sliders in the game — at 83-84 mph with a spin rate around 2700 RPM, according to TrackMan.<<

Joey Gomes is the coach and general manager of the Healdsburg Prune Packers, so he should know.

While Chase Gardner has been getting some attention of late, I've been meaning to give Jeff Kersten a mention at some point. Seems like a good time with this tweet. Kersten has been having a solid summer for the Prune Packers as well. 3.15 ERA in 20 innings, with 2 wins to his credit.

Kenny Bergmann list Newberry baseball on his instagram. We were wondering if the catching position would thin out.

Kenny Bergmann is still hitting over .350 for Watertown of the Perfect Game League and made the league all star game, yet he wasn't getting any updates to his summer ball season on the UConn baseball twitter feed. That had me wondering if he was coming back, especially since he was obviously the odd man out. Can't blame him for leaving, with Pat Winkel, Paul Gozzo, and the rest of the crowd that UConn potentially has at catcher.

Right now, all four Huskies currently playing on the Cape are with Bourne.

CJ Dandeneau gave up a run last night in his 1 inning pitched for New Bedford. It was the first run he had given up since June 21, snapping a streak of nine scoreless appearances for him. The run he gave up last night brought his ERA up to 1.25. In 21.2 innings, Dandeneau has 36 strikeouts and 11 walks, with 15 hits given up.

2019 MLB Draft: Five College Pitchers Helping Their Stock In The Cape League

>>Jacob Wallace, RHP, Bourne (Connecticut)

Wallace served as UConn’s setup man this spring and has remained at the back of the bullpen this summer for Bourne. He’s been one of the best relievers on the Cape, as he has not allowed a run in 12.2 innings, posted a 22-to-5 strikeout-to-walk ratio and held opponents to just nine hits. He also slammed the door for the West Division in the Cape Cod League all-star game, coming on to get the final two outs, both by strikeout.

Wallace consistently throws his fastball 93-95 mph and mixes in a hard slider in the mid-80s. He’s been used exclusively as a reliever in college and he profiles well there. Wallace has a chance to be one of the better college relievers in next year’s draft.<<

One of the more interesting and strange seasons this summer for a UConn player belongs to Ben Maycock. He was a part time player for the Watertown Rapids of the Perfect Game League, getting into 23 out of 47 regular season games. As of July 8, he was hitting .154. Maycock’s bat then heated up, closing the regular season hitting .265, with an on base percentage of .463, and a slugging percentage of .485. Nice end totals, to say the least.

Maycock produced some wildly crazy statistical totals, both good and bad. In the 23 regular season games he played, Maycock struck out 31 times, almost half of his 68 at bats. I have to say that I get concerned when players strike out in a third of their at bats, that many strikeouts are not a sign for continued success. Not counted in the at bat total is the 20 walks he got, an absolutely huge total considering the number of at bats he had. In addition to the big totals in both walks and strikeouts, Maycock showed good power when he did make contact, producing 6 doubles and 3 homers.

The regular season is over, but Watertown did make the playoffs. Watertown won their first playoff game last night, and Maycock had something of a typical game, striking out twice and walking once, while scoring a run.
