2018 College summer ball - UConn players

Scouting Trail: California Collegiate League:

>>Jeff Kersten, Senior, RHP, Healdsburg Prune Packers (Connecticut) - 6-foot-4, 195 pounds, long limbs, lean athletic build. Long arm action but creates good deception with it. Throws from a three-quarters slot with a fast, live arm. Athlete on the mound, and repeats delivery very well. Efficient strike thrower; gets batters out early in the counts. Sat 87-91 mph with good sinking action, touched 92. Can flatten out at times and that is when he gets hit. Spins a tight, 11/5 rotation curveball (75-78 mph). Got many swing and misses with it. Flashed a slider at 83-85 mph that shows potential, yet needs to improve this pitch to remain a starter. Fields his position very well and moves off the mound well. Overall, Kersten throws an average fastball with good life to it, has an above average curveball, will need to work on his third pitch (slider) to pitch at the next level.

Chase Gardner, Senior, LHP, Healdsburg Prune Packers (Connecticut)- 6-foot-7, 245 pounds, thick legs, with a strong large build. Throws from high three-quarters slot, with a quick and short arm action. Simple delivery that he repeats well. Has a high leg kick with a little hip turn. Started the game throwing strikes but lost his delivery and command as the game went on. Good downhill plane on his fastball which creates deception to hitters. Sat 86-91 mph on his fastball, touched 92 in the first inning, but lost velocity in the later innings. Can locate his fastball to both sides of the plate and induced a lot of ground ball outs. Spun a curveball at 74-77 mph that got swing misses. Also threw a few change ups (80-84 mph), just average now but shows potential. Fields his position pretty well for a larger guy. Overall, Gardner knows how to pitch and get outs, but will need to prove he can maintain his stuff in the later innings to stay away from the bullpen<<

Dandeneau's ERA is down to 0.92 after getting the save in tonight's game. Both Dandeneau and Jacob Wallace have both been terrific out of the bullpen this summer for their respective teams.

Incoming freshman Adam Schwartz is now listed as a RHP on the Bristol Blues roster.

Langer in LF tonight and Phillips in RF tonight for the Bourne Braves (Thad also played RF yesterday). Interesting given UConn's crowded returning infield and crowded catching corps for next year with only Toppa returning as a major contributor in the OF.

The Bourne roster that is online shows that they have only two players that are listed as outfielders, so someone from the infield and catching spots are going to have to play out there. Still, I had noticed with interest Phillips playing the outfield last night as well. While I haven't checked every Bourne box score this summer, last night was the first time I had seen Phillips listed as playing the outfield. Now Langer gets a shot in the outfield as well. I'm sure this does not bother Coach Penders in the least.

As for UConn, I have been thinking a few players that we have seen playing the infield or at catcher could be seeing some time in the outfield, at least during fall ball. While I like their defense in the infield, it wouldn't surprise me to see Winkel and Woodworth get some time out there, as well as Christian Fedko.

I am surprised Toppa has not been picked up by a team on the cape . Bourne obviously needs OF help and has the UConn connection.

One thing that should be noted about Jake Wallace is his steady year by year improvement, not only at UConn, but also with his summer ball stints with the Bristol Blues of the Futures League and with the Bourne Braves.

>> Chase Gardner, LHP, UConn
The big lefty threw an 11-pitch three-up, three-down second inning. During that stint, Angels manager Mike Scioscia said about Gardner, “He’s got great life on the outside of the zone. He’s got a little funk to his delivery but does a great job of getting away from those right handed hitters and can control the count and control the zone.” Gardner made 15 starts on the mound for the Huskies this spring in helping them reach the title round of the Conway Regional. He throws from a three-quarter arm slot and his heater can hit 91-92 with an accompanying biting curve ball.<<

On Deck Sports Player and Pitcher of the Night 7/22

>>The On Deck Sports Pitcher of the Night is University of Connecticut commit Jake Sanderson of the Worcester Bravehearts who went 7 innings pitched, allowing 6 hits, 2 walks, and 2 earned runs while striking out 4 to get the win over the Pittsfield Suns, 9-3.<<

Jake Sanderson has had three solid starts since he joined the Worcester Bravehearts of the Futures League, compiling a 2.25 ERA. 16 innings pitched, 12 strikeouts, only 4 walks, and 13 hits given up. He has also been credited with 2 wins.

More from Aaron Fitt on the Cape Cod League All Star game and Jacob Wallace:

Cape League All-Star Weekend Notebook | D1Baseball.com

>>• Oregon righthander Ryne Nelson showed the most velocity of any pitcher in the All-Star Game, sitting at 93-95 and bumping 96 in a scoreless ninth for the East. A few other pitchers touched 95: Connecticut’s Jacob Wallace, Western Illinois’ Ian Koch and Miami’s Gregory Veliz, all of whom also showed quality sliders. Veliz’s slider had the most power, coming in at 87-88 mph. Wallace recorded the final two outs for the West in the ninth, striking out the only two batters he faced, and showcasing one of the best sliders in the game — at 83-84 mph with a spin rate around 2700 RPM, according to TrackMan.<<

Joey Gomes is the coach and general manager of the Healdsburg Prune Packers, so he should know.

While Chase Gardner has been getting some attention of late, I've been meaning to give Jeff Kersten a mention at some point. Seems like a good time with this tweet. Kersten has been having a solid summer for the Prune Packers as well. 3.15 ERA in 20 innings, with 2 wins to his credit.

good to see. Whether it’s a weekend starter or week day/depth we are gonna need jeff in quite a few situations.

Kenny Bergmann list Newberry baseball on his instagram. We were wondering if the catching position would thin out.

Kenny Bergmann is still hitting over .350 for Watertown of the Perfect Game League and made the league all star game, yet he wasn't getting any updates to his summer ball season on the UConn baseball twitter feed. That had me wondering if he was coming back, especially since he was obviously the odd man out. Can't blame him for leaving, with Pat Winkel, Paul Gozzo, and the rest of the crowd that UConn potentially has at catcher.

Going to my annual place in Orleans next week and take in some CC league games - hoping to catch some Huskies

Right now, all four Huskies currently playing on the Cape are with Bourne.
