Holmes comes out of the game with the bases loaded and 2 out. Joe Simeone in to try to get the last out in the top of the 6th.

Bottom 6th, Stefanski double followed by a Susi double brings in a UConn run. UConn misses a chance at a big inning stranding 2 runners with less than 2 out. 5-1 Tulane.

Thoughts on the game:

-We absolutely dominated the first half of the game..we came out with energy and it showed. Practically every hard hit ball was by us, including some foul ball bombs

-Tulane didn't quit, but just didn't get a big hit when they needed it. Poulin's stuff is probably the least impressive of the 3 dudes we threw, but he located well

-Sat close to a scout...Feole legit hits 92-93 with regularity and hos curve is legit. Looks like another top draft pick for us

-Tulane repeatedly called for bunts in situations that did not call for it. Horrific coaching, our team generally fields the bunt well

-We hardly ever struck out, but the inability to draw a damn walk is holding back this offense. We have no patience whatsoever. At one point, Susi swung at a 2-0 pitch at his neck...

-Both defenses fielded much better in the game than in warm-ups

-Nice home run by Barry Bonds in the 8th inning. That ball was pulverized

Other general thoughts and quips:

-Lousy atmosphere today. I liked the ballpark a lot, but our fans were pathetic. Half of them watched the game from the terrace, while another 20% were socializing near the vending areas. The rain (mere sprinkles) and cool weather hurt attendance numbers, but there were still ~1,000 people there. Only 250-300 seemed to care about the result.

-Home plate ump was consistent through 5 innings (giving the low and inside pitches while not giving the outside corner), then shrunk the strike zone down to the size of a cranberry. Feole cruises through 7 without that zone.

-The scouts at the game would intently analyze the UConn pitchers, then play on their phones when Tulane came out on the field. To be fair, their pitching was not in our league; only their Canadian reliever impressed me. Their starter threw 85 mph meatball fastballs with no movement. That was their weakest starter, though

Good win tonight. Hopefully the fans sit in the seats tomorrow!
And we continue to swing at ball 4's. No patience at the plate. They have to see how walks can help an offense.

Chris Jones just said that the Saturday game of the Houston series will also be televised on WCCT ( Home of the CW).

Top 9th, runner on 2B and 2 out, the back of the bullpen, the seldom used senior Joe Rivera comes in to try to get the final out of the inning.

And another strike out swing on a ball 4 over the head. Geez! Could be a rally right now. Instead not!

After the excellent run the UConn offense has had of late, I'm not going to get on them for an unproductive day or two. Chalk it up to the opposing pitcher and his effectiveness and move on to tomorrow. Hopefully the hitters will return to their recent run producing selves on Sunday.

With today's home loss, UConn drops to currently 15 in the RPI.

In AAC action, Memphis gets their second conference win of the season, beating South Florida 8-2.
7th inning, Houston currently leads East Carolina 2-1.

Couple of observations from today:

First the pitching

1) Gardner was pretty good for 3 innings but being tall - his mechanics got away from him and then the wildness started. He has potential to be good.

2) Trevor Holmes has not improved- tops out at 88 - and has no deception- he needs to keep the ball down to be successful or he will continue to be bypassed in the pen.

3) Dan Rajkowski almost got out of the bad inning- he came in with the bases loaded and did a nice job getting the 1 and 2 hitters on strikes before giving up the grand slam the opposite way. He has become more reliable and today notwithstanding, has been good.

4) Joe Simeone - not bad for a freshman- I can see him becoming a closer for us down the road.

Hitting :

1) Our top 5 guys in the lineup are pretty good. Chris Winkel has really improved and I think that next year he will be a power hitting beast. Nucerino also appears to have lots of potential. C Mo and Woody had some bad at bats and they need consistency to take us to the next level.

2) Tip your hat to the Tulane pitcher- he hides the ball well but today was his day. He showed toughness and the ability to bear down in tough spots.

Time to get after them tomorrow.

UConn bullpen was unimpressive. Really looked like UConn would get to Tulane's starter but it never happened.

Jeff Kersten seems like the logical candidate to pitch on Sunday. However, it could quickly evolve into a staff day with all hands on deck, since it is finals week at UConn and the baseball team does not play again until Friday night.

Surprised they'll be able to play this morning. Gotta be quite a few puddles in the outfield.
