Bottom 7th, Peterson faces the minimum as Donlan throws out a stolen base attempt for the final out. 7-4 UConn. Peterson at 102 pitches, so it may be it for him today.
 
Top 8th, UConn goes down 1-2-3. 7-4 Huskies.

Bottom 8th, Brady Afthim in to pitch for UConn.
 
Top 9th, a scoreless inning for the UConn offense.

Bottom 9th, Justin Willis in to pitch for UConn.
 
Bottom 9th, Seton Hall loads the bases with 1 out on 2 singles and a hit by pitch. Single drives in 2 runs with 1 out. 7-6 UConn. Willis gets strikeouts for the 2nd and 3rd outs. Willis gets the save, UConn the 7-6 win.

A win is a win and maybe this wakes them up for the Dan Hurley on Saturday. Need to put them away when you have them down. Willis has struggled this year, wouldn't mind seeing Coe get the closer nod to see what he can do.
 
Penders needs to stop with this Willis is my closer stuff and his 5.84 ERA. The kids done nothing but throw gas on his own fire this year.
 
Just got out of meeting and followed the thread. Too many people throwing dirt on the league, Hall and our own players. It is college baseball. It won't be clean games and the best team doesn't always win. And Willis has been fine. We have been spoiled for 12 years with closers. Willis isn't as lights out as everyone else, but he hasn't hurt us either.

Coach Penders says he's a bend but don't break guy. Because of the doubleheader on Saturday, Afthim may get an opportunity to be a closer in one of the games.
 
It’s better to win ugly than not win at all. Keeps the win streak alive and momentum for the Dan Hurley on Saturday. Willis is fine, every closer struggles, even the best in the MLB have rough outings but he got it done and that’s all that matters. He will learn from today no question

Willis is striking out over 40% of batters faced so far this season which is indicative that the stuff is there for a late inning role. His walk rate is a little higher than you'd hope but not horrible. I can understand why the staff is still sticking with him for the time being in the closer role and think the ERA will likely improve in time.
 
ERA for a reliever who throws 2 innings a week is irrelevant. If the reliever gives up a 2 run homer, his ERA is going to be inflated due to the low number of innings. Saves, holds, inherited runners not scoring, etc- those are the most important stats for a reliever.

Florida barely beat this team, then lost to them. Don't think the pollsters care about occasional close road wins so long we balance it out with the beatings we've been giving other teams lately.

Interested in seeing Afthim or Coe potentially close a game out on Saturday, but I won't argue with the results we've gotten from that position even if it has been agita inducing.

Is there a formula for the RPI in baseball that includes margin of victory? In basketball, they used to have that but did away with it. If it isn't a major component of the formula, a win is a win is a win.

For the record, margin of victory was never a component of the RPI statistic, not even in basketball. It was a component of the selection process by the committee, though.

Baseball RPI has the home/road weighting component in it, but its calculated without margin of victory.

You all have answered the question to type of wins. A committee won't care if we beat Seton Hall by 1 run or 9 runs. Just win as many as you can during the regular season. Win the tournament and then go get the regionals.

If you are going to claim that the NBE is better than the AAC in baseball - you are going to lose that argument. As DBMill pointed out that SHall is a lower rated NBE team and I accept that position. UConn benefitted by playing against nearly every AAC team which made them a stronger team entering post season play.
UConn's record could be very strong and that in itself will speak volumes for post season qualification but I do wish the NBE would be a better baseball conference - the OBE with ND, SFla, ULouisville would have been better.
